What is it? and how do I rid myself of it?

The tank is a Fluval Ebi with biomedia instead of sponge in the filter and some gravel ontop of the shrimp media to hold it down.

No CO2.

Is it really slimy when you pull it off with your fingers? Looks like green hair algae to me. Apparently it isn't particularly picky about light so blackouts supposedly don't work that well on it. I've heard the use Flourish Excel at double to tripple dose, but some plants really don't like Excel and I had my tank up to 4x dose and the algae was still persisting.

I also tried the manual removal + water changes which also didn't do it for me.

I finally broke down and got some amano shrimps and they are monster algae eaters and they are making a huge dent in the algae.

It's Beard Algae, and is best taken care of with CO2/Excel. Using a syringe and applying Excel (or even H2O2) directly to the algae has the best results.

the cost effective solution of Metricide works like a charm

i don't like spot treatment as there are always nooks which are missed, i prefer a dosed tank as those nooks have been taken care with nothing missed

your killing it when you see it change color

btw, watch your lights and nutrients
