captinstabbin
Hey guys! I was busy staining my stand made of pine 2x6's when I stopped, stepped back & thought"this really sucks"! I don't like what it looks like & just want to paint it. I used a small can of something called miniwax which is like a stain & finish in one. It doesn't leave a gloss finish so I'm wondering if anyone knows if it's o.k to just paint over or should I sand? :boom:
rahim101
I have painted over stain before. I would think all you need to do a a light sanding, then use a good primer dealer and then paint away!!!
andyg
The Minwax your're talking about is a mix of stain and acrylic varnish. Like rahim said, do a light sanding with 180-220 grit sandpaper or 00-000 steel wool. One coat of primer sealer ( BIN 1-2-3 works good for this as it will stop the stain from bleeding through) and paint away.
rahim101
OR use "KILZ" as the primer sealer!!!

captinstabbin
thanks for the advice guys! Short on cash so you guys think I can get away with the quart of outdoor acrylic & a good sanding? I was told that with the outdoor paints, one doesn't have to apply as many coats as with indoor paints :poo:
rahim101
if you don't use a primer/sealer first, the stain will bleed through the paint, doesn't matter whether you use indoor or outdoor paint.... it's the sealer that you need the most!!!!! You can have the sealer tinted though!!!!!!! They do sell them in smaller cans at home depot

muck
If you use the KILZ stuff make sure you use it in a very well ventilated area!! I made that mistake once and never again..
Majestic_Aquariums
Probably too late for this .02 cents, but like Muck said, that KILZ SMELLS! You can get a water-based version though-dries fast, and doesn't smell.
