t3ch
Hi everyone, I am quite puzzled right now: I just got a 55 gallon tank setup with sand and some drift wood from the previous owner and I am getting weird water test. 0.25 Amonia at least 2ppm nitrite and 5 ppm nitrate. The substrate and brand new play sand I just bough and carefully rinsed until water running clear, the drift wood was boiled as well as filter medias. Anyone have an idea what's going on and should I worry about starting my cycle like this ?
ckmullin
The cycle has started without you. Nothing out of the ordinary that I see.
t3ch
It does seem like it started without me... that's the part i'm confused, where did that amonia, nitrate and nitrites came from if there wasn't any fish waste, plants or anything live in the tank? ckmullin
My guess it was from the wood.
Iceturf
Even bacteria from dust particles will settle on the water and induce a cycle. You really can't stop it from happening.
