dunl
As long as it is plain lava rock, nothing that has been treated for barbecue use or anything like that.

wandj
Lava rock: use as much as you want. It is perfectly inert. I would like to take a sec to warn people about a "rock" that is not. Never use what is called "Utah Ice" in your tanks.....it WILL disolve (in high pH for sure). It looks like fake glass. Had white grit stuck all over everything. Run away.... Also, Tufa rock also dissolves. (It is nothing but Calcite so will dissolve and make your water harder) I notice it crumbles apart and can also turn green in spots. jvision
I've been using lava rock in my filters for bio for years! Such a huge surface area for the bacteria to colonize.
