Mighty Prawn
I've seen a link to it before from here, but cannot find it for the life of me, now. It was an article on how to make your own rocks, or rocky backround out of some material that looked a lot like styrofoam, and probably was. My 180 gallon is in (yay Dennis!!!) and luck would have it that my basement is NOT ready for it yet, due to a delay in getting our drywall and floors finished in time. So now I have some time while I am waiting for the walls, floors and ceiling to be finished, and thought, why not make my own rocks? Should be a lot cheaper I thought, and would allow me to make a much safer environment for my spaz oscar who likes to suddenly dart around the tank when his own shadow scares him. I also thought I'd be able to make a much better variety of caves and such. I just hope I can make it look good! Anyone have the link, or even some tips on how to do it? Anyone done it before? Long term disadvantages/benefits? I know styrofoam is non-biodegradable, but I wondered if being in the water with the bi load would have any effect on it. Thanks in advance! -Hideo
FishBrain
The only thing like that I made myself was a couple Caves out of Small pieces of Lava Rock. I used a bowl for the molding and once all the pieces were in place in the bowl I Siliconed them together. Then do the base on a flat surface and when they are dry, put it together like a puzzle. I enjoyed doing it this way because you can control the size of the mouth of the cave and also the # of entrances. GL

Moogled
Cichlid-forum has a bunch of DIY articles through use of concrete/styrofoam to create backgrounds.
Pufferpack
If you need thick styrofoam for this let me know, I presently have lots in the garage (most pieces 48"x48"x12")
