Heat!

Does anyone have any tips for helping fish out when the temps fluctuate

so much? I dont have AC, and even my 55 gal goes up to 84-85 in the day

and down to 80 at night. My little 1 gallons are even worse but so far the

bettas in them don't seem to mind.

Bit of an odd question to throw in perhaps, but I may be on the market

for another place to rent in the Calgary-Olds area, hopefully something

out of town limits or at least with lots of space. (large family!) PM me if

u can help!

In the wild, there are often huge fluctuations in temp - in FW environments, anyway - throughout the day. It's not a big deal as long as you have plenty of circulation. Warmer water holds less dissolved O2, howver.

A good way to keep things cool is to blow a fan across the top of the tank, letting evaporation cool things down - you'll be surprised to see a fan keep tank temps 2-3 degrees cooler than the room, easily.

...and if the temps are hitting 82ºF+, you might want to pop in an airstone to keep the DO up.

I use a powerfilter as well as a full undergravel with 4 stacks going at all times. Its a

breeze to keep clean and the fish love it. I splurged yesterday and picked up a cheap

window style air conditioner- if it cools off the living room by a few degrees on a hot day

then its worth it for all involved. My breeders are in the basement where the temps dont

fluctuate as much.
