Thanks A 10 gallon tank is simply going to be too small, as the male will end up killing off the females. You will need to go with a larger tank. The males are also very agressive towards other males, so if you have more than one male, you will need MANY females to take their minds off each other. Green Seahorse
I agree with dunl a ten gallon tank is way to small.............. I find all my cichlids are very teritorial and need a lot space to be happy, plus the ones I originally bought never really grew in the ten gallon they came with, they fought all the time..... My smallest breeding group is in a 33 gallon tank.
KevinW
I am considering putting P. Saulosi in a 70 gallon. I was thinking of 2 Males to 4 or 6 Females. Do you think this will work or will I need more Females?
jvision
KevinW, if you have a couple or few rock piles, it should work out fine.
edmguy
i find sometimes keeping sub males around trouble i useually keep the alpha male with a few females (the more the merrier i alwasy say). but sometimes you need the sub male around to absorb some of the aggression to keep the heat off the females.... Vallisneria
When building breeding group si like to either keep 1 or 3(or more) males. When its just 2 the dom male beats a lot on the sub male. With atleast 3 the agression is spread out a bit more.
nevchewy
I would recommend at least a 50 gallon tank (4' long) for a group. I have my breeding group of 2 males and 8 females in my 60 gallon tank with lots of slate rock work to create caves. It can be done in a 33 gallon but you may have aggression issues... PM me if you are looking for some saulosi as i have f2's that are just about an inch big now. The parents are in my avatar. nev Edited August 25, 2006 by nevchewy
