  1. I am thinking of putting 6 cherry shrimp in my 29 gallon tank. I don't think my swortails and platies would eat them. Would my 3 corycats or my Mato Grosso pleco snack on them? Cherry shrimp are cute, but they would make an expensive snack.
  2. I have been told that putting plants into an un-cycled tank is a very good thing. The plants bring beneficial bacteria with them and help the tank cycle faster. I have a 5g betta tank and I put a clump of java moss in there. It seems to be doing very well. The filter received only a squeeze of water from an established sponge. The tank has been set up for 2 weeks and the plant has shown growth. I did also have some hair algae that had started to move in. Popped in a few spotted snails and took care of that.
  3. I agree! I don't always have a lot to say. Everyone here has been so helpful. Often people ask questions I have been wondering about and when I ask a question people are so helpful. Post counts don't count to me!
  4. I'd be careful, the big yellow one looks aggressive.
  5. Oh! Thank goodness. I didn't want to be the one who said it, but those fish look like they have something wrong with them. Apparently they actually are wrong. The real parrot (Hoplarchus psittacus) is a pretty fish.
  6. If it were up to me I'd have more. Husband has capped me at: 5 gallon acrylic containing 1 betta 29g listed above and 55g with big plans to come. I'm just lucky he didn't kill me since I unplugged the TV during the last minute of a tied hockey game so I could steal the power bar for my fish tank. He kept looking at me like I'd murdered his pet bunny and saying "Why would you DO that?"!! WHY would you DO that? Why would you DO THAT? Why would YOU do THAT?
  7. All I have in it for plants is some java moss. I will be putting some java fern in it, but nothing beyond that. The 55g I have planned will have some plants in it. Not sure just yet which ones.
  8. I set up my new (to me) 29g aquarium tonight. It is currently holding: 5 swordtails (2 males 3 females) 5 platies (hopefully all pregnant) 3 bronze corys 1 mato grosso pleco 2 spotted snails 1 baby swordtail fry I transfered the old filter from my 20g and it is running merrily in the corner. Hopefully it is currently infecting my new filter with plenty of bacteria. Everyone seems to be acting normally. The heater has been functioning normally. Everyone please join me in hoping that this will be a super and successful venture.
  9. I am aware they are both catfish in fact they are bolth Ancistrus catfish. The bristlenose will also stay quite small. I may just end up with one of each kind in that tank. I do plant to give them veggies to supplement their diet. Right now I just have the mato grosso. He gets a sinking wafer every few days and all the algae and driftwood he can eat. When I have more plecos there will be sinking wafers dropped more often.
  10. It has now grown into: 1 mato grosso pleco 2 bristlenose plecos 12 teeny tiny corycats and however many guppies steal my heart when I go to Nature's Corner next. (likley around 15)
  11. As I have no other place to put the labs if they start causing a problem, I think I may not risk it. Perhaps I can just get more gouramis. Do they hang out together like swortails?
  12. I would have to get myself a camera. Which, come to think of it, would be a darned good idea! I admit, I am very greedy. Can I have 3 different colours of dwarf gourami for the males? Or would that be a bad idea?
  13. I understand the need for the gourami. I was in Nature's Corner store on Friday, I fell in love with the gouramis there. The trouble is choosing which colour, there are so many and they are all so pretty.
  14. Will my mato grosso pleco eat my Corydoras pygmaeus if I keep them in shoals of 10 or so? Will plecos eat small fishes? The pygmy corys are so cute I think I must buy some.
  15. If you are still in the frymaking business when it gets warmer I wouldn't mind shipping some up here to Edmonton. I'm a huge swortail fan and pineapples are my favorite coloration.
  16. Would a pair of yellow labs be better than convicts? It seems a few AA memebers have some and the websites have described them as being more docile. I value their behavior and colour the most.
  17. I'm going to get a 56g tank in a month or so. (faster if husband hands over the credit card sooner) I am planning on stocking it with: 5 dwarf gouramis 2 males 3 females 1 gold nugget pleco (yay! bottomfeeders!) 6 corycats 5 swordtails also 2 males 3 females I was wondering if there would be any problems with that set up. I want the tank to be medium planted. I also ant to know if I could stick a pair of convicts in there. Sorry if my questions are silly, I have to start somewhere.

    FRY!

I introduced some new swordtails today. While I was watching them swim around I noticed one solitary swordtail fry hanging out under my floating java fern. It's only one, but I am so happy! Perhaps next time more will survive now that I did away with the "critter".
  19. Oh, that is so fabulous! I can't wait to have one of my girls drop more fry. Without a horrid little predator in the tank I can manage to keep the fry away from mommy and all of the other fish, perhaps I can keep some of them alive. I actually own some of those pot scrubbies.

    Hello!

He got to you too? Ahhhhhhh! That Henry is a menace, with his good advice and helpful information. Henry is one of the reasons I am swiftly sinking all of my spare cash into as many tanks as Husband will let me get. I've never been happier. Welcome to the boards!
  21. No problem, I am learning a lot about keeping the little buggers alive. I certainly need to!
  22. Java moss seems to do well for me. It floats around like a fluffy green cloud. Generally anything that says it is a low light plant seems to have been recommended to me when I asked a similar question.
  23. That little jerk. I am glad I squashed him good!
  24. Unfortunately I won't be purchasing this tank. I do not have the available funds to do so right now.
