  1. That surprises me Wendy, after seeing the fish that you do have success with. I'll see if I can dig up some pics from a few months back when they laid eggs - got two f and one male last February, and after two paired off, I gave one to my brother in law. The tank is always at 29 to 30*C, owing to the discus that they share the tank with. They've laid eggs twice, but even after separating them with their eggs (on a piece of driftwood) the eggs quickly disappeared. The male is one of the bigger rams I've seen. Okay, found a blurry pic with eggs: I'll see if I can find some more...
  2. Yeah, dirty glass, but I had to run and get the camera quick - the male ram was chasing the female around the tank, while the discus looked on - rams were in spectacular coloration - this pic doesn't do them justice: Meanwhile, my biggest discus was cruising the middle regions in case food appeared...
  3. Couple of months ago I had two tanks fail within a week of each other. Now its filters. My trusty old H.O.T. Magnum bit the bullet last week (had to take out an old AC 300 I had in storage). Couple of days ago, I went to do my daily feeding on the downstairs tanks, and the AC150 I had on the 77gal (as a supplement to the wet/dry/sump I made and a Emperor hob) was DOA. Then I checked my 90gal and the lift pump I was using to turn the biowheels (as a backup to the big Emperor hob) is no longer pushing water, and no amount of cleaning will rejuvenate it. The "good" news is, it looks like the filter jinx is over - I came home this evening and the coralife aqualight on the Discus tank is blinking but not coming on. arghhhh...
  4. Well, let's just say when I was at your place to pick up the synos, I tried NOT to look at your salty setup, but I accidentally peeked... NICE. I think you only had the small reef at the time. But even then it was very cool. Yeah, that's what I've read as well, little flow, light is not important. We're gonna do live rock, skimmer, no filter, no substrate and a small powerhead... er.. ummm... I mean SHE's gonna do... yeah.
  5. My wife was at a LFS and fell in love with..... are you ready for this one? :poo: SEAHORSES. :boxed: I've been a freshwater keeper since my teens, but always swore off the salty setups. Too much money, work, etc etc etc. We now have a 40 gallon column tank in the living room (apparently a 60 with discus in the living room/kitchen is not enough), and she's making plans for her seahorse tank. What can I do, except support, start learning, and jump in, so to speak? I'm just afraid that one may lead to.... well, you know what happens. Phil
  6. Do you play soft music in your fishroom? Amazing how every fish you keep seems to pair off and reproduce... maybe you oughta open a fishy-fertility clinic?
  7. Just stripped one of my three females into a 15 gallon... Now we have a pile of babies in there! About 10 days old now, and they have at least doubled in size. Fun stuff!
  8. South and Central Am Cichlids - the reason I got into the hobby, and still my faves... Mixed throughout a 33, a 60, a 77, and a 90, I have the following: -5 firemouths (I still call em cichlasoma meeki, but I know they've been reclassed) -1 a.rivulatus (GT) -1 heros severus (6 years old) -1 cichlasoma nicaraguense (or whatever its called these days?) -2 convicts -3 angels -3 g.balzanii (one of which is a handsome 4 yo male) -3 f redhumps, 1 m, 4 juvies, 100-ish fry, 10 days old -1 g.tapajos -3 festivums -3 discus -2 rams (1m, 1f)
  9. Sorry to hear the story - impressive that you were able to tell it to all of us, and take full responsibility. Take some heart in knowing that you've probably saved someone who read your story a similar fate down the road. Here's to hoping you feel Better, Phil
  10. Had a pink convict that came with a used tank I bought a while back - I wanted to trade/sell her, but my wife wouldn't hear of it - "Casper" is hers now, needless to say. I went and saw my buddy Chris today and on a whim I got an "ugly" male for Casper. I forgot how much I used to enjoy the plain old Convicts - haven't had em since I lived at home, back in the late 80s. The two con's are currently circling, digging the gravel under a rock structure, and making family plans  in their own 33, that they're sharing with my wife's Jewel. They're not particular about anything, ask for nothing, and they are kinda cute, in their own way...
  11. Nick, Pisces had some in one of their tanks last time I checked, though they couldn't tell me exactly which one it was, and I couldn't make a postitive ID either... but next time you're down this way you might have a looksie...
  12. Holy heat! Glad I have my tanks upstairs warmish for the discus... rest of my tanks are downstairs. Last two days is been 29 *C on the main floor, basement is cooler.
  13. Sorry about the dirty glass, as soon as I started trying to clean it, mama started gathering the children, so I left it alone. Anyways, here's a pic: Just moved her today, and she wasn't too happy about it - I managed to strip her of most of the fry, but she is still holding some in her mouth, back in the big tank. Sorry mama - she's going around the tank looking for the rest - I feel so cruel.
  14. Nice! Gotta get me some of them someday...
  15. I've finally got free-swimming redhump fry! They're so cute swarming around mama, trying to get back into the safety of her mouth... gotta get some pics, only when I get close to the tank Mama scoops em all up. Uh-oh, I have another female redhump holding in the 10gal next door - something tells me there's gonna be some redhumps for sale at the fall auction! Phil
  16. Great job! Welcome Basil! :welcome:
  17. First glimpse of the fry yesterday..mama was herding them around the tank till she saw me coming, then she scooped em all up. I didn't get a real good count, but my wife was sneaking down to look yesterday several times and she figures more than 50... so cute! Now I have to move my other holding female to her own tank... Gotta feeling that there'll be some redhumps at the CAS auction come October!
  18. Funny you should bring this to the top Sam. Tonight I went down, and lo and behold, ANOTHER female redhump is holding eggs! Now i need to find a place to put her - guess I'm gonna have to set up ANOTHER 10 gal...
  19. Thank you. I was having to shoot downward, since there's no background on their tank, and there was a window behind me, so bad reflections... I fluked into focus, since those little buggers never ever stop moving. I think its time to break out the tripod for those guys...
  20. new sunspot brevis: I finally caught a brichardi not darting away... man alive these guys are hard to photograph!
  21. Why not your favorite one, the ornatippinis... did I spell that right? -roll-
  22. Ditto on third shot. That's a tough shot to get in focus: Nice work! Nice looking fish too!
  23. Great looking L.Brevis Connie! -roll- Whoah...Just kidding! I'm just making fun of myself... Have yours claimed any shells yet? Mine are feisty little buggers! I was very tempted to go back and get those blue brevis today - the more I thought about it, the more I think I'm going down tomorrow to get em... and you're right, they do look pretty nice with plants in with em. Hmmmm....
  24. Whoops. :& Tis indeed Ocellatus! I was looking at brevis, which was what I orignally wanted, but saw these guys and liked them too... ended up going with the ocellatus... but apparently no-one told that to my keyboard... heheh... In any event , the shellies are doing great, they love the frozen mysis, and they've each claimed a shell. But funny, I went down after lights out last nigh, and one of the calvus had also claimed a shell, and was totally inside! :shifty:
