  1. Condensation won't be a problem, as it will be ontop of my glass tops... If you are worried, they make little tubes to slide over bulbs, to protect them from condensation and what not. Cost like... $3? I'm getting the bulbs on saturday, as I must shop at Rona (Brother works there). I'll keep ya updated
  2. You can make a sump quite quiet... but that involves making sure you sump as lots and lots of water... so the when water falls through the bioballs it doesn't splash much. You'd have to use a standpipe in the overflow block, to make the water level much high so it doesn't fall the height of your tank before going down. Then you'd have to put a sound deading cap on the top... I've seen a few DIY for it, but I can't remember any off the top of my head. HOB in my opinion, on large tanks, are going to be making splashing sounds no matter what. If you want quite, go for a canister, then jam the canister under the stand, and you shouldn't hear a damn thing My 2 cents
  3. Nice pictures How the hell many fish are in that tank? lol
  4. Ok... someone was talking about a $15.99 ballast that Rona has... I bought one today. Fricking awesome. Doesn't have to be hardwired... plugs right into my timer. Put 2 bulbs from my ceiling in it, and its just as bright as a single T5... and cheap cheap cheap Just wondering... I can't find the thread that someone mentioned it in... but what type of bulbs do you use in it? Rona has these $7 bulbs that are for 'aquariums and plants", and I wanna know if anyone knows if they are good, or what? Also, would you advise me to or not to put a huge like. 18000k (Or water ever a power glow is), in it? And with that said... anyone got some cheap 48" bulbs for sale?
  5. LoL, I already called him. he sold them Yesterday! BLARG! He thought he had some more, but now he thinks they are just normal fryeri, and I really want the iceberg's Blarg! Blarg!
  6. Next time your over we can catch em and vent em. Got one of them fancy little head magnifyglass things that Don had? :P That thing was cool Im gonna be returning female #1, and possibly #2... number 3 im still on the fence about. I may just return her and possibly buy a breeding group I saw in the bargain finder
  7. Sorry that they are a bit blurry... had to mess with the shutter speed to get desent colors that weren't completely blurred, and then had to crop them and blow them out a bit. Thanks
  8. Got these from a local store that can stay nameless, but they were sold to me as "female Iceburg fryeri" Erm... are they? They definately look weird Heres number 1: And number 2: and number 3: What I don't understand, is why number 1 has yellow in its fins, but number 2 and 3 don't. Number 2 has more silver in its top with a hint of red near the end, and number 3 has no coloring just a hint of silver in the very tip of the top fin... It doesn't make sense to me... help think I should return number 1 and 2, as they are so f'd up? thanks Ty
  9. If you choose to pry out the Cory, be careful to pull back and not to wiggle up and down, you could accidently break his jaw. But yeah, you wanna get him out.
  10. If he tried to eat the clown loaches, they probably just shot their spikes out while in his mouth lol I tried to pick up one of mine today that was breathing funny, and he spiked me Bastard
  11. I have a fluval 404... bought it new, and Im not disappointed with it... The only thing I hate, is when Im sort tempered, and the damn thing refuses to prime. I've found ways to force prime it, but thats hard to explain, so bah Well, for a sump example... I have a 150gallon, with a 33gallon sump (Thats were my bioballs, sponge, carbon, and Magdrive 12 are). Works great! I don't remember who, but someone else... canuckle maybe, has a 180gallon with I think a 45-55 gallon sump. Also ask yourself where you are putting this... mine as a standpipe (Allows water to drop less distance and less splashing sounds), and its still kinda loud. If its near a bedroom, I'd advise against a sump, or I'd go all out on making it quite. Mine is in the basement, and the sound system drown's it out when I watch tv, so no problems with mine. its all proportional. The bigger, the more water, the better the tank in my opinion. Golds orders from the guy that my tank came from, so you'd get a similar setup depending on what he had around the shop to make a sump from. When I got mine, he had a few sitting around the shop, and they were quite cheap. Talk to dennis, and Im sure he hook you up with a sweet deal. My tank: (You can see the corner of the sump... I'll try to get a better picture later...) Snuggled nicely in there, with 2 10gallon fry tanks beside it... works fantastic!. You can see the overflow in the back left corner of the tank, sorta hidden by lava rock. I also use a Fluval 4Plus to get the water near the bottom moving. better filtration
  12. First you need to decide what you can afford. AC's seem to work the best and are easy to use, for their price range, and for the smaller tanks. For the larger tanks, Ehiem seems to be the leading brand for canister filters, with Rena XP3 close behind. for a 10gallon, a AC (means Aquaclear by hagen), mini can do the trick. For a 45 gallon, you have many options, canisters, HOB (Hang off the back, which is what the aquaclears are), it all depends on the type and amount of fish, and the price range. Im a college kid, so cheap is my path, but if you have the spare cash, go as big as possible, and you'll thank us later. For a 125, there are even more options, like overflows and sumps, were you clean the water in a secondary tank outside of the main tank, then pump it back up. Great filtration, but can get costly... I hope this made some sense, as Im quite tried. Best bet, if you have time, is to order online, or if you're in a hurry, go to Golds (If you're in Calgary), if you're not in Calgary, drive to golds.
  13. Not sure of the K actually... I don't remember what the sign said. They are the 48" 54watt (VHO) T5's... You can pick these up for $50 bucks at quickgrow in calgary. The Reflector cost $25, and I got my reflector from Organic crop near Picses. Im thinking about adding a 3rd one in there... The nice thing about these bulbs, is they come with connectors, so you can connect multiballasts and only have one plug to go into the wall. (My canopy has an inside of 48.5", and the actual ballast was 47", so I couldn't connect them in a series, and haveta use to plug in's. Bt yeah, they're awesome Super impressed
  14. Thanks You can actually see the 2 female Red shoulder peacocks in the the T5 Picture... and some clowns, iceburg, all 4 yellows. The only things that are hiding are the taiwan reefs Bah!
  15. Without T5's With T5's Wow, they make a huge difference... the pictures don't show it well... but if you see the growlight on the side in the w/o T5's... that equal brightness is put out by the T5's... so now when that light is on the side... I can't tell its on Awesome! It cost me all of $140 MAX to switch my canopy's old homedepot light, with these T5's (These are VHO) Kyle is doing the same thing on his 120gallon, but its gonna have double the T5's... should be interested to see how much he blinds his fish lol Look at the way the sand is shown. It looks 10 times better with the T5's! Mmmm
  16. Lmfao! I didn't notice that! lol. When you're children misbehave, you now have something to threaten them with.
  17. Or take the trip north this sunday, go to the auction, and stock up on plants there If you want great lights for planted setup, that are cheap and affordable, Kyle and I just got some 54watt 48" T5's... I have 2 on my 90 gallon and dear god, they look awesome!!
  18. With fish that big, it will be hard to find a new owner if you wanted to get rid of them, and its hard to decorate that tank, being that you have such large occupants. The best bet is to wait them out, lemme get older, and pass on. Then go whatever direction you want. Or! GET ANOTHER TANK! hehe I've done that tooooo many times
  19. Yeah are quite interested fish. A type of catfish is what I hear aswell. They can grow fast if fed the right food, and can easily grow to 2 feet in an aquarium, and have been caught at 4feet in the wild (So I hear, and have read) They will eat what ever fits in their mouths, and are generally hardy fish. Be careful, they are also strong fish, and I had one flip out and smash my thermometer
  20. I have java moss in my 5.5 gallon, and it grows like a !$@!$. IT constantly jams the intake tube, either in the tank, or further inside, because yes, it can grow a bit inside the tube. On a AC of any time, its easy to clean. You just turn it off, dump all the water out, turn the motor of (It should twist one way, rather easily). Then grab the impeller and gently try to pry it out. Straight out. Then clean the impeller, the magnet, and what I do is take a q-tip and clean where the magnet and impeller slide into, to make sure it gets max speed. I have to do this about every month, as it drastically slows down the flow if you don't keep on it. With my javamoss, I just grab it (avoiding my shrimp), and tear a large, about 75% of it off... throw it in a fry tank, and then let it either grow there or die there. Within 2 months, my 5.5 is over flowing with java moss again, and I repeat the process, throwing out any crappy parts Ty
  21. The 3d backgrounds I think you're talking about, can be bought online, for actually quite a bit. i remember a site that was floating around(Check back for an old thread about 3d backgrounds) All they are: Styrofoam of your desired thickness, sculpted with knives, then heat gunned to get rid of any crappy edges, then painted with cement paint (With the pigments of your desired color). Then they attach them how they wish (Dozens of ways), to the back of their tank (inside it ofcourse, to get the 3d look they want), and then magic! An awesome background
  22. Around Calgary, BowValley seems to be the main tank supplier, but also the least reliable. For fish, there are a few people you can talk to, none that I can name off hand that won't start a fight here or there. Theres also some wholesaler for fish I keep hearing about, but I have no clue what it is
