  2. Here is a pic of my big male 6 toed cat on his new favorite bed! I think its warm next to the lights!
  3. Love it!! I have a cat who also thinks he owns the place! Looks like they may have something in common!! Jodaye
  4. Im gonna say red empress aswell just because I had a boreli and the colouring on the females is a brown/gold colour, and my male didn't have any horizontal striping.....but it is an odd shape (your fish) I'd post on the Cichlid forum, there are some real experts there aka Fogelhound......good luck! Jodaye
  5. Hey and welcome, your red Emp Females are doing really well in my 180 with thier boyfriend, none holding yet, but they have been trying!!!! Welcome! Jodaye
  6. Here are some pics of the BIG tank!
  7. Not yet, Im trying to figure out how to get the clearest show with my cheap camera, I'll try and post some tommorrow;)
  8. I have a 3 bulb set up and use 2 All Glass 25W Aquarium bulbs and in the middle I use a 25W Coral Sun Actinic 420, gives off a nice blue hue and brings out some amazing colour! Jodaye
  9. Yes the fish is still alive, I bought him some frozen blood worms, whick if I may add is a complete pain in the A@$ as he is the only one who get them and we all know how big the frozen block is....needless to say I thaw ans freeze em as needed....I would love to know your theroy though??...I bought him at Big Als here in Edmonton...he didn't eat for 3 weeks until I bought the worms, now I feed him every couple days and the pellets in betweet, which he still doesn't touch!! Pain!!! Jodaye
  10. My fish used to all have names, others have just been passed on...Red Empress male is Otis, his females are both called Milo, RIP all the original name sakes which came with them when my brother gave them to me. Mpanga male is Bubba and his girl is Babs. The M. Esthrea are Cumquat and Tangarine, the Multi's are all called Speedy. The rest of the fish don't have names cause well, my brother started it, and I didn't keep it up!! Fun topic BTW Jodaye
  11. I have a new Betta that I picked up a week ago, almost 2 weeks now, but he hasn't eaten a thing. I've tried flake and betta pellets and he just swims past it all and lets it fall to the bottom of the bowl, I have been changing the water more frequently than the others as the food is just rotting, but he appears healthy otherwise. Any one have any idea as to what else I can do to make him eat??...he is a young fish (not the prettiest Betta I've seen either!!) Thanks all Jodaye
  12. I used silica sand from Princess Auto, was 5.99 per bag and is really easy to clean aswell as it looks great..I'll atach a pic for you, sorry about the quality but I hope it will give you an idea of what it looks like Jods
  13. OK, Then I'd just keep up with the water changes for everytime you see ammonia (test Daily for now) and only rinse your filter sponges in the water from the aquarium. The ammonia can also come from dead fish, or food left on the bottom, maybe get a bottom feeder lit a cory catfish to clean that up...sorry but thats all I can suggest, the ammonia will drop once the bacterial chain redevelopes, just keep up with the water changes! Jods
  14. When u washed the filter, did you use clorinated tap water, if so youkilled the bacteria that would be changing the Ammonia to Nitrite and then to Nitrate.....If you just rinsed it in tank water I'd check ur test kits! Jods
  15. Put some foam over the intake for the filter and just leave em, the mother may pick em up and spit em out a few times over the course of the day (if thier africans?), but she'ss eventually spit em and leave em, this is when u should take the mother out of the tank and let the babies grow up.....feed em too, I buy Hikari First bites for my fry when they're that little, some pple use cyclopse something or another, but don't panic, its nature!! Jodaye
  16. I will do, Im getting some pretty fancy shmancy 3 bulb lights and thier going to go white/blue/white to get a wicked effect, this is going to be an african tank, and Im planning on putting what I have in the 55 in there (listed in the signature) and then adding some more larger Haps.....gonna be wicked, but hey, you may have the Danios when My tank is done its seasoning if you want, may as well pass em around!! Jodaye
  17. I have washed it for days it seems, and its running clear (except for the mild oily film, which is also becoming less) but I have it out in the yard in big buckets still (too heavy to get inside on my own) so I'll rinse it even more once the tank is delivered this week! Thanks for your help and advice, I am thinking about getting some Danio's or something to chuck in there for a week or so just to get it all tested out, I have a filter running on my 55 gal now that will be transfered so the cycling will be minimal, but with all the new stuff, you can never be sure, wouldn't want to lose all the fish that I love! My problem is then what to do with the Danio's after!! I had some that lived with my cichlids for like 6 months when I started the 55 gal.....arch...well I supose it wouldn't be that bad, I all of a sudden will have loads of room!! hehe :w00t:
  18. Yeah Its the same stuff, and I was just checking out your thread and the one on Cichlid forum, thanks, looks like I'll be ok with it, bought like 5 bags of the stuff!....is your tank set up, got any pics?? Jodaye
  19. Well I bought some sand blasting sand from Princess Auto for my 180 gal tank...was rinsing it when I noticed there is an oil like slick on the top of the water...now Im not sure if I feel good about that or not but can anyone coment on what this may be? I bought the 5.99 bag of Silica sand...there are no other descriptions or ingredients noted on the bag.....anyone else used this stuff?? Jodaye
  20. Where'd you find the black stuff, how much did u pay??
  21. Well I've picked up 5 bags of silica sand from Princess auto...gonna take about 5 days to rinse it clean...but it was cheap enough (5.99 per bag) and is a nice light brown colour....is this the right stuff? Ya well anyways, If I hate it I can take it out and go gravel...but I really wanted to try sand! I do like the look of the Crushed coral I have too, but you do have to rinse it really well and yes it did scratch my tank, its quiet sharp....and Im not one to be overly carefull when cleaning the tank....but I stir up the gravel really well and it doesn't cloud the water anymore (I didn't rinse mine well enough at the begining and it took about 3 weeks of regular cleanings before I could see the Danios, that where my starter fish, swimming around!....was pretty funny though...lets chalk it up to a lesson learnt! But I should get the tank delivered next week, I'll take pics and post the details when its all set and ready to, gonna take awhile Im thinking, a big project that I've been thinking about for a year or so, so Im hoping its going to be as beautiful as I hope!!
