  1. Looks like some kind of dace or shiner. Google florida native minnows and you may be able to ID them.
  2. Got a look at them in Jay's tank after being released from the transport bag 20 minutes earlier. Don't mean to put any pressure on you Jay, but I'm hoping you'll successfully spawn these sooner, rather than later.
  3. I'm not sure about the stores right now, but if you can wait until the ACE auction in October there's usually killis sold there.
  4. Pretty sure it's sometime in the fall, to be more specific, probably sometime after Sept. 1 and before Dec. 1. Hope that helps!
  5. They are some young from the breeding group that I had. They are easy to spawn once they are mature. How old are they? They do like using a spawning mop, and if you have any cover in the tank some fry will survive.
  6. Do you have any better pictures? Right now I'd say the only true way to confirm if they are gomezi is if the females answer to the name morticia ... :smokey:
  7. Use a piece of sponge instead of the slotted gates that they provide.
  8. I would doubt that you can purchase them locally. Try Aquabid.
  9. If it's any consolation, and I'm sure it's not much, I was in Riverfront today and they have at least 1 male and some very healthy looking female wanams.
  10. Although they are from the same family (Callichthydae), they really don't look anything like Corys. Great information on planetcatfish regarding any species of catfish.
  11. If he built Ivan's tanks, then he is good.
  12. I would try lowering your pH gradually. Softening the water probably wouldn't hurt either, and it will make lowering the pH easier. I had a pair that spawned 24 times before they raised a batch. Be patient, as watching the parents raise a brood is one of the highlights of the hobby.
  13. Fin2you has the right idea, do you have a tank big enough for these big Corys? Large Corys like these can be guilty of deaths by males engaging in fights for domination , especially in tanks that are too small for the less dominant fish to escape.
  14. Check on planetcatfish re: them. There are a few species that are similar like fowleri. You should be able to get good info on them from there. If not try corydorasworld.
  15. I just received my third edition ( May/June 2012) of the new magazine put out by Hans-George Evers, Amazonas. This is a bi-monthly magazine that just started in Jan. of this year. It is without a doubt the best magazine I've ever seen in my many years in the hobby. Each edition covers one topic in depth with at least 4 articles on the chosen topic, with the rest of the mag. comprised of the best articles and pics ever seen anywhere. That is, with the exception of the German edition of the magazine which was started in the 1990's by Hans-G. Problem is is don't sprechenzie deutsche too well, and reading it is impossible for my present German/English translation talents. This edition's topic is wild and domestic plants. Some of the other articles are: breeding ones on the Arrowhead Puffer, Denticeps clupeoides, Ixandria steinbachi, collecting rainbowfish, fish rooms in Switzerland, fair weather ponding, endangered cichlids of Lake Victoria. It's retailing for around $10.00, and I've seen it at BA's in Edmonton. After reading the first one, I promptly took out the longest subscription I could and am thoroughly enjoying every edition so far. I can't recommand this publication enough!
  16. Looks like some kind of livebearer
  17. The crud is probably providing some infusorian food for the fry. If you're really concerned, throw in a bunch of snails, common Ramshorns, pond snails, and they'll start to turn the mulm into snail feces, which will in turn feed the infusoria.
  18. It is still being sold by retailers here in Alberta. I have seen it in Calgary and Edmonton stores.
  19. Yes this is part of our youth program guiding our "human fry" to an eventual life of indentured servitude. We are only in the infancy of the program but are already seeing positive results. We'll try to keep everyone here posted of our review after the conclusion of the first 5 year period.
  20. Best info on catfish on the net is planetcatfish.org
  21. Marina makes a Breeding/Holding container that is perfect for emergency situations like the one you've got. They come in 3 sizes and you could have harvested the eggs as soon as you saw them. The container hangs on the side of the tank and only requires a single air line for it's operation.
  22. Proper identification can be difficult unless you know the collection site, as there are times when Brazilian fish are exported out of Peru.
