  1. Use some salt in the water it helps heal wounds and helps with stress. I have a 18" tire track eel and he has had his problems with heater burns and scrapes and battle scar's but salt always seemed to help. Don't get me wrong i did alot of water changes but i added salt. I only use salt as a remedy not full time use. Use only aqurium salt.
  2. Wow thats too bad i wish i had seen pic's earler i would of taken it. I'm even driving to red deer this weekend. Is it at pet land?
  3. Silver Arowanas grow pretty fast, faster than most people expect...maybe 4 years to that size but in one year they can grow from 6"- 18" with lots of feeding. As for shipping you would have to talk to sea world....lol
  4. ya its a silver and its like 3 1/2 feet long...one of the biggest i've seen...
  5. SHAFTS ARE AROUND 10 BUCKS AT GOLDS I THINK BUT LAST A LONG TIME.
  6. They are the best but they do wear out....the shaft needs to be replace and the impeller. but for a qwick repair turn the shaft ovef in side. ?Use pliers to pull out shaft and tap back into place should help short term but there is no better filter.
  7. I've raised Archers in fresh water for years till they got very big with nice bright yellow tails.
  8. Call Gold Aquariums in Calgary he always has some in and they are always in good shape. Also usually the cheapest....
  9. My cat rolls around in front of my big tank all the time after he's done vacuming up all the fish food. When i open the lid he comes running for supper.
  10. Maybe in loyd it would be hard to get rid of them but i seen a store get some in in Calgary and once it went around town all 25 were gone in a few hours. I never have seen one come back ? They must of all died?
  11. Welcome to the site i hope you have fun and find what your looking for...
  12. Housing a fish this size is not the only problem the food requirement is astonishing. And no,dog food is not a good substitute. (seen that on another forum) Its hard to control who buys what fish, but i agree Arapaima really don't have a place in home aquairia. I must say we do see fish stores who sells a Oscars or arowanas to kids with a 20 gallon tanks. Maybe more info on store tanks would help like adult size and tank requirements? Stores will never do it because it cuts into there profits.
  13. There is more people than you think with the capabilities to keep these large fish. Check out Monster fish keepers if you get a chance. Some of the members there live here. Education of potential owners is what fish stores and this site is for, if you have a 33 gal tank stick to guppy's and barbs not Arowana and Arapaima. Know if you have a 5000 gal invite me over i'll bring beer......lol
  14. One of my favorites along with the Asian leaf fish.
  15. One would assume this is the case but we have never had ours freeze up at work in the 16 years i have been here, so i am sure there is heat added.
  16. Its like a radiator in your car only it gets rid of cold instead of heat. when you draw off large quantities of oxygen fast it causes freezing this radiator helps with out side air temp to keep lines free.
  17. You could also add a power head to agitate the surface more to add current. I recomend the seio power heads for price and long lasting my korilla power heads lasted half as long.
  18. I think he looks good and his color will pick up. I have a green asian that is in apicky mood right now as well only eats freeze dried meal worms and some hikari carnivor sticks, wont touch his frozen smelts or krill any more.
  19. Well probably a bichir and somthing else we could talk....lol how big is it now
  20. Wow i'll take the armatus and the dats nice too. I thik the whole tank has a nice balance, just need one of my ornate bichirs in there and you'll be good...lol
  21. With my small one i used to feed them rosy red minnow (fat heads) when iy came time to change them over i just thawed out some krill and let them sink past the fish one at a time. I also had other fish that ate them as well for clean up so i didn't really have to worry about the bottom of the tank. Eventually one took one and they decieded they were good eatten. It might take a few days but give it a shot all my predators eat freeze dried krill, pellets, shrimp makes it easier than running to the fish store all the time. Might want to have a small red light on your tank many like to ambush food in the dark.
  22. Yes your right you can not keep snake heads in ontario and i believe all of the U.S do to the fact they can take over and kill off entire spieces. They don't like our frozen climate hear very much....lol course niether do I. I have kept the cobra sanke head and they do usually get quite agressive as they grow. check this out 25lbs 33" long http://www.carpecarpio.com/snakeheadfishing.html
  23. Mine at that size ate frozen krill and thay took yo it pretty fast. Just an idea.
  24. Glad to hear everything worked out, i'm glad for you and your fishes
  25. Are your sure its cloudy eye? The reason i'm asking is my datnoids shoot around my tank alot and somtimes hit there eye on diffrent objects which leaves them cloudy while healing. I just do water changes and add aquarium salt to the tank and they heal up nice and qwick.
