  1. Again, if there is enough interest I might place another order for June. Pickup would be at the Club Meeting on June 7th which is also the Aquarium Beautiful contest along with the year end get together with food and beverages. As well, you can also place orders for worm keepers at the same time. For those of you who already bought worms, a club member passed on something to me, Home Depot has a wine cooler for sale right now, 6 bottle wine cooler for $39.99 which would be great for keeping about 1 pound of worms and keepers, instead of your main fridge. Either leave a post on this topic or PM me.
  2. Hi Anna, and welcome to the site, I think there are a few shrimpaholics on this site that you might know.
  3. No, it is not a problem. Just go to the website www.fish-club.org to download your application form. You can either mail it in or bring it to one of the meetings. You do get other perks as well, discounts at some LFS's, access to a well stocked library of all the fish porn (literature) you can read as well as videos. As well members are able to sell at our spring and summer auctions and Calgary even lets you sell in theirs as well.
  4. The order will be closed on Sunday. We will have 20 lbs ordered, unless more people want to order. Again here is the time and place to pickup. Tuesday May 3rd, 2011 St Benedict Catholic Elementary School 18015 93 Avenue (2 blocks west of WEM) Edmonton, Alberta Please enter through the west doors, remove wet and dirty footwear in the foyer, then enter directly into the library. The parking lot is a bit small, but there is plenty of street parking in the area. Regular club meetings will now be held in this location. Meeting starts at 7:30 but I will be a tad bit earlier so can pick up before meeting starts, during the raffle break or after the meeting.
  5. The fluval edge filter is just an aquaclear 20. You could try another one that you know works or just use a sponge filter. I use the edge filter on mine with a sponge, and the flow turned down to literally a trickle and I haven't experienced many losses. In fact the freshwater pipefish in there keep breeding (on 3rd spawn right now)
  6. This order will close on Saturday April 30th when I get home from work which will be about 1:00 AM Sunday. A quick update, currently we have 15lbs ordered, if we get another 5lbs the prices drops $5.00/lb. Again if there is enough interest I can make this a monthly or bi-monthly thing, from September - June when the Aquarium Club Meetings occur.
  7. 2 more weeks until the blackworms arrive. Pickup will be at the ACE meeting on May 3rd. St Benedict Catholic Elementary School 18015 93 Avenue (2 blocks west of WEM) Edmonton, Alberta Please enter through the west doors, remove wet and dirty footwear in the foyer, then enter directly into the library. The parking lot is a bit small, but there is plenty of street parking in the area. Regular club meetings will now be held in this location. Meeting starts at 7:30 but I will be a tad bit earlier so can pick up before meeting starts, during the raffle break or after the meeting. Raymond
  8. This order will go ahead as I have my minimum of 10lbs. You can still get in on it, if I can get 20-30 lbs it gets cheaper. Also if there is enough interest I might make this a monthly or bi-monthly thing.
  9. I am probably going to order in California Blackworms in for our monthly meetings. If you are an ACE member you might have already gotten an email from me, but I am opening it to non-members as well. It is just the ACE members will get it for a reduced price. If you are interested please PM me and I will let you know the cost. They will be shipped in the day of our ACE meeting and can be picked up at the meeting. This order will go ahead if I get 10lbs or more ordered. The proceeds do go back towards the club. Here is some info from their website California Black Worms ® ( Lumbriculus Variegatus, not Tubifex ) There are many important reasons to choose Live Blackworms for your fish instead of frozen and machine prepared "fast" foods. Obviously, live foods are the truly perfect nutritional source for your tropical fish, but are you aware of some of these other reasons?... * Blackworms are small enough ( no larger then one inch long or the size of a pin) for all tropical fish to devour them. Great for smaller mouthed fish like apistos, rams, angels, discus and livebearers * The uneaten worms will not die and decay in your aquarium gravel bed and filtration system. * California Blackworms ( BLACKWORMS ARE NOT TUBIFEX ) are raised in controlled conditions and are free of parasites and pathogenic (disease causing) bacteria. * uses a high protein manufactured feed along with an advanced reproduction environment which allows our live food to compete with the basic flakes and frozen foods that are available. * Your fish will love devouring these live Blackworms. Thus, following nature's instincts, they will glow with emotional health. Summary, These rich, succulent Blackworms are teeming with nutrition. Your tropical fish will quickly show the vibrant glow of health that nature intended for them when you include live foods in their diet. California Blackworms provide the most excellent source of protein, and are extremely useful as a conditioning food for breeding preparation. HOW TO KEEP AND FEED BLACK WORMS Black worms are easy to keep alive and store.... they live in shallow water and can be kept in a covered (allow air) wide and shallow plastic food keeper (6"x10" I find works well) in the fridge. Add 3/4 to 1 inch of water, doing a water change a few times a week. To feed, simply scoop out the amount you need with a small spoon and add to your tank.... they will sink to the bottom (if they make it that far) and will move and wiggle until eaten. Bottom feeders will gorge on them if given the opportunity. They will live until eaten so no waste, no rotting food, and all fresh and healthy. Blackworm Care You have selected one of the best tropical fish foods available. You will find that your fish will be healthier and maintain their true colors. Our California Blackworms are the perfect food for conditioning new tropical fish and breeding tropicals. Upon the arrival of your Blackworms thoroughly rinse them with AGED PRE CHILLED WATER (40-50 degrees) until their run off water is clear and clean. When placing them in your live Blackworm keeper or other container make sure that your worms are no thicker then 1/2 inch. If they are thicker they may suffocate or try to escape from their container. Keep no more then 1/2 inch of water above them, and do not cover their container they need to be able to breath. Keep your Blackworms in the refrigerator. They need to be kept between 40-55 degrees. Do not keep them in an aquarium, outside boxes, basements etc. Only in the refrigerator. To keep your worms fresh they should be rinsed at least once a day. Use only AGED PRE CHILLED WATER when rinsing. Do not use aquarium water, or room temperature water. Only cold 40-50 degree water. You do not have to feed your worms, they will live off their own body weight. However the longer they are kept they will lose weight. Weekly orders are suggested to insure freshness. Uneaten worms will not foul your aquarium, but do feed according to your fish and aquarium size. Raymond
  10. Eheim is a very good filter. I have 3 of them right now.
  11. They have a much bigger fish room They did move about 2 blocks east, right by Tanzam Motors on 51st Ave
  12. Assassin snails are good. They will never really eliminate the problem but they can keep it in control. Also loaches can work as well. As for food for puffers, the trumpet snail's shells can be a bit tough for the puffers to crack, I think ramshorn and pond snails work best for puffers.
  13. Dwarf cichlids are nice. There are the Apistogrammas, Aquarium Central has about 3 or 4 different species right now. Big Al's usually has about the same. Like Blake said its all about water parameters. They like a softer water but if you take your time acclimating them they can do fine in our water, they just may not breed. There are also Pelvicachromis (Kribs) There are some nice ones out there.
  14. Also Troy Turner will be speaking about his trip to Lake Malawi with Ad Konings.
  15. I also tend to keep some running in my larger tanks so if I have to set up a new tank, I just move that filter over and pretty much instant tank setup with little or no cycling.
  16. I have my green shrimp in with swords, and smaller tetras. The green shrimp are surviving, but sometimes its hard for me to see shrimplets. I do have two breeder traps and somehow some green shrimp have gotten into those. One good thing though is I have this big piece of driftwood (at least for that size of tank) where most of the shrimp hang out so they are surviving.
  17. fishlips, here are a couple photos of my geophagus sp. red head tapajos. These were purchased from Spencer Jack close to a year ago or sooner, I can't remember anymore. Please excuse the algae spots on the glass
  18. I have one nerite in with my pipefish for algae control. He/she does lay eggs and I've never seen it on the glass, just on the fluval edge zen ornament.
  19. Could probably set up one of those HOB overflows and set up a sump, I see room underneath the tank.
  20. A key thing to do when adding livestock is to use airline hosing to drip acclimate them. It will take longer but overall you will have better survival rates. With corals, also check on canreef, you can usually find frags for fractions of what you would pay at an LFS.
  21. Neolamprologus pulcher are not shell dwellers though, they are rock dwellers. They are interesting because the adults take care of the young until the next spawn. The surviving fry will also help with caring for the young. So eventually you will have a few generations taking care of the young which can make it difficult for the other inhabitants of the tank.
  22. Canadian Aquatics sells a product called No Planaria which is fish, invert and plant safe. He might be able to express post some out to you.
  23. Collecting trip to Brazil? There are also some smaller africans, shell dwellers from Lake Tanganyika, or some of the smaller rock dwellers, julidochromis, altolamprologus would do well in a 33 gallon.
  24. I would go planted small tetras,a small school of corydoras would work.
