depends on the pumps flow rate.. I use 1 1/2" pvc with a 450-500 gph pump... no problems
if your pumps flow is more than the pipe can handle ,, just make 2 overflows, one for each side of the tank..
first off, find out if the tank is "tempered" glass.. very important !!!and when you find out that it is tempered glass, make a diy overflow.. NO DRILLING NEEDED..

I use folded/ compressed cardboard and jam it under the desired spot.. It has worked for my 125's.. no problem..
