  10. Is there a guide as to how much crushed oyster to add to a 30 gallon tank to raise the PH from 7.6 to 8.5 Thanks John
  11. As far as I know..... a common allergy. You can use gloves to handle them, as it mostly a contact allergy. John
  12. I would recommend this as well. I manually bypass the softener for WC and fill my barrel (valve on the back of the unit). I am not sure anymore what exactly goes on (I did research it at one time) I believe it was the conductivity (measured in micro siemens) that changed dramatically and for the worst. As Jason said most fish are fine, discus would not like it,although they manage. More( mumbo jumbo)The Calcium ion is replaced by the salt ion making the water feel softer but it actually is not. Once the calcium is removed, buildup in pipes is a lot less, and you need less soap, and the white wash is whiter. I have read that you can not use the other salt (???) readily available as it may kill your fish. John
  13. That would work (photobucket) also If the pic is too large (>9.67 mb) it won't upload. once it is uploaded click by Manage current attachments and place the pic in the add. john

  17. It is possible that adding plants changes the balance in various bacteria in the tank. It should settle eventually but more WC may be nessesary have read here http://www.oscarfish.com/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=80236 sounds like the start of a bacteria bloom. More experienced folks will add to this for sure. John
  18. Yes. you can buy an in line valve to regulate the amount of air. Also get a one way valve in case of a power failure, the tank could drain without the valve if the pump is below the water level. J
  19. Thanks guy's really appreciate your input. Time to get the tank ready. Looks like It's a go  John
  20. I have been thinking about getting an oscar for a long time, and I may be ready to get one. I have a 3 foot, 65 gallon tank with an xp3, and would only put the one fish in there. So hopefully the xp3 and a big wc once a week will be enough to keep things clean. The substrate will be sand (I guess) with a few large rocks. I read that any plant will be toast. I would appreciate any advice from the experts as to what to expect and what to look out for. Where would I look to get a nice one? Do I need to be talked out of this? Thanks in advance. John
