  1. I'm very new to fish keeping myself, but it seems to me that your idea of temporarily putting him in his own tank should be a good idea. If he were mine, I think I'd use water from the tank he's used to, treat with Prime & Melafix, add some Epsom salt, and up the temperature to 78-80 F. Then keep fingers crossed! I also wouldn't feed for a day or two. What are the ammonia & nitrate levels? Good luck!
  2. I have had the priviledge of seeing Patrick's fish room in person, and it is really amazing. Very inspirational, and very well done. When you get bored you can start on mine. Thanks for the pictures!
  3. What a pretty boy! Definitely interesting colour. Where did you get him?
  4. Those are stunning creatures! Lovely.
  5. How about self-contained ecosystems floating in space? The way we're going here, that's the only way things are going to survive!
  6. :welcome: There are some great people on here and I'm sure you'll receive lots of advice on where you can find the fish you're looking for! Lots of people in Calgary
  7. WOW! That is truly stunning. Some people have all the creativity! I'd love to be able to see one of these in the flesh (so to speak) Thanks for sharing Terrie Lee
  8. I used to go to the Vancouver Aquarium fairly often waaay back when it was part of the zoo. I was really disappointed when they closed the zoo. My family last visited the Aquarium about 10 years ago. My daughter was about 3 & she got drenched by spray at the orca exhibit. (Scared her silly, poor thing!) It's a pretty amazing setup - every hobbyist's dream, I imagine! LOL Thanks for the pictures. Made me all nostalgic.
  9. That's great! I know my aunt has goldfish in her outdoor pond and they overwinter without any filtration or heater all winter - don't ask me how! We used to have goldfish in a big jordenier (sp) in Australia and they overwintered fine, but the ice was never more than a couple mm thick. They are amazingly tough critters. Gotta admire 'em!
  10. Awww, that's awful. Poor little thing. I would suggest that you take the poor thing back to the store - it should be their responsibility to humanely euthanize her if she can't be helped. And if they witness her suffering they may be more inclined to do something about it & honour their warrantee. Having said that, I'm usually too lazy or too cowardly to follow my own advice - I just rant at my family. :boxer: Keeping my fingers crossed that she miraculously manages to spit that thing out.
  11. :welcome: aboard! This is a great place to share ideas I'm already jealous - you have a couple of tanks I want. :smokey:
  12. Yay on the babies! Amazing how little critters can brighten up your life. And good timing on their part. Hope your back heals quickly. Ouch! Take it easy & get well soon.
  13. Gorgeous! Lovely colours.
  14. :welcome: to you both. This is a great forum, and lots of fun, too. Enjoy!
  15. I think the only thing worse than having to take a pet's life is explaining to children why it must be done. Good for you for having the fortitude to do the right thing and set a responsible example to those kids. Sure wipes you out, though. Best of luck with the other fish!
  16. :welcome: Yep, as a newbie the more you learn, the more expensive this wonderful hobby is! At least until you really get set up (haven't reached that point myself yet). What a wonderful introduction - thanks for sharing. And congratulations for sticking it all through. Look forward to reading your posts. This is a great place to just hover & learn. LOL
  17. WAY too cool! Seahorses are just about my favourite water-critter! I'm so jealous! I think they've gotta be one of the first projects when we're ready to get into sw. Congratulations!!
  18. Very new, still getting started, but definitely BITTEN! :smokey: The DH would love to get a 50 - 90 gal S/W, but I'm concerned about getting into too much too fast and I'm just starting to touch on the beginnings of f/w. I want a 50 - 90 f/w first, then a s/w! 'Course, the right 'deal' comes up, we'll probably do something stupid & get in over our heads (so to speak) Love 'em all!
  19. Nice shots. I never really had much appreciation for cown loaches until I started seeing photos of them in community tanks. They're really pretty cool!
  20. Thanks, all! I had thought of the White Clouds - I really like them, but am mildly concerned about the goldies munching them. My goldfish seem pretty mild-mannered and were living with a weather loach for a while - they all got along great. I have pretty good filtration in the tank and do regular water changes so I think I can get away with careful overstocking. What I would like to do is add 2 or 3 weather or khuli loaches and a dozen White Clouds, but I know the 10 gal simply won't handle that many fish. Anyone have a 20 - 29 gal they don't need? After spending about $150 each to set up two 5-gal Betta tanks for the kids the DH isn't keen to spend more on the goldfish so it'd have to be pretty cheap. (The kids' Bettas do seem very happy, though!) If I can get a bigger tank I won't hesitate to try a couple of different options for expanding the goldfish tank. We are planning to build an indoor pond within the next couple of years (gotta get that addition on first!) so as the fish grow they will definitely be relocated to bigger & better digs. Thanks again,
  21. Hi! I've been looking into this and I think the answer is a qualified 'no', but are there any fish that can be kept with goldfish. I have 1 x 1" fantail and 1 x 1.5" common in a 10 gal and would like to make the tank more 'interesting' if I can do so safely. I've got an FX10 and an undergravel filter in the tank. Current levels have been good & stable for a while now. I'd like to get 2 or 3 weather loaches and maybe something else? PH is high, though - can't be helped. I know the goldfish will grow, and have long-term plans to handle that, so... any suggestions?

    Hello

:welcome: I'm new myself, and can definitely say this is one of the most welcoming and knowlegeable forums I've ever been part of. (And it's pretty cool that most people live close enough that we just may be able to meet someday!) Enjoy!
  23. Thanks so much for sharing! I've been following this thread with interest, and really appreciate your taking the time to break down the cost. I'll be on the lookout for broken aquariums and/or glass pieces now in the hopes of maybe building one with my kids in a year or so. Looks fantastic!
  24. Is this the same as the Australian barra? I was sure surprised to see the barramundi as a tank fish. It's considered to be an excellent sport fish (and very good eating) in Australia! LOL -roll- He sure is a pretty-looking one, though. Where did you get him?
