Ive got pleco's in a planted tank with breeding logs. Iv'e never had a problem with them up rooting any plants.

I'd have a community tank with 3 RTG, some datnoids and a ray or two, that would definitely be the setup.

Check with your area, maybe they dosed your water with more chlorine/chloramine? i always add extra prime just in case.

I like to keep my pleco breeding tank, a species tank only, with some Malaysian trumpet snails and some cherry shrimps for the cleaner crew.
