  1. An update on the situation. Since the first post the female has held twice. I just stripped her 5 days early as the past 2 times she has swallowed each time. I have about 20 Red Zebra babies that are now 2 days old. They still have their egg sacs in place but i haven't lost any yet. I'm keeping them in a small breeder tank with an air stone set with gentle bubbles. This seems to be keeping them as a group and so far so good! Sorry Jods2518 but these were not from you. Jason is right as these are the bright bright orange zebras that i brought to a prevous auction and sold for $12 per fish on average. The male is super picky and has only spawned 4 times now in about 2 years. I'll keep you all posted. nev
  2. The male saulosi looks fantastic! nev
  3. Very nice! Are those saulosi? where did you pick them up from? nev

    new stand

Looking great! this is kinda like the stand i built to hold 2 - 10 gallon tanks under a 4 foot tank (right now i keep a 60 gallon tank on top but it can hold a 90 gallon if i wanted to upgrade). sorry to hear about your leak! nev
  5. I caught her yesterday after she was beat up and swimming upside down. I quickly put her in a 10 gallon tank for her well being. She died last night. She is survived by her mate and best friend. A group of rusties claim no responsibility on the beating but remain positive that the beating was no accident. The declined any further comment. The rest of the Saulosi group has not only lost a mentor in breeding like rabbits but they lost a swimming partner. Life will go on... Life will not be the same... nev
  6. They look awesome! very nice barring! nev
  7. that was my first guess as well... The one big egg spot on the blueish fella is a normal trait of male Ps. Saulosi... nev
  8. Does anyone freeze their fish if/when they die? Is there a real purpose to this? or is it more to prove to your buddies that your fish in all the fish stories is really as big as you say it is. nev
  9. I have one in my 33gal grow out tank... so far so good! nev
  10. In the last ACE news letter there was an article on Michael Pham breeding them locally. It was also mentioned that there would be a few bags available at the auction... it will be interesting to see how much they go for! nev
  11. what are you water parameters like? you might want to do a couple of water changes over a week peroid... it may clear up on its own... if it spreads then you have a problem! nev
  12. Very cool! if you don't mind me asking... where did you find this critter? was this purchased on the 'Black Market'? nev
  13. I know what you mean... I have a small group of rusties (My breeding male once was Val's). They always have nipped fins and often get beat up. They are way more aggressive than my saulosi. i have tried rearranging the rocks in the tank... did nothing. adding caves... nada. i have tried adding more males and females and they but they all got beat up... i have 2 males and 3 females and have learned to accepted they will always be a bit more aggressive. the only suggestion i would have is to get a larger group of them to curb some of the aggression and more rock caves for new territories. if this doesn't work... put him up for sale... good luck! nev
  14. Here is a link to further support the answer: http://www.cichlid-forum.com/phpBB/viewtop...t=lava+rock+bbq nev
  15. Update The female must have swallowed her eggs... hopefully this is only the beginning and they breed like rabbits in the near future! nev
  16. Currently Breeding: Mbuna Pseudotropheus Saulosi (F1 parents pictured in my avatar) http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=1 Iodotropheus Sprengerae 'Rusty Cichlids' http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=707 Peacocks Aulonocara sp. "Lwanda" http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=663 What i hope to breed in the future: Haps Placidochromis sp. "Phenochilus Tanzania" (I have a WC male and a tank raised female that are about 5 inches... hopefully they will spawn in the near future). http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=1218 Mbuna Pseudotropheus Polit (have a group growing out, but it will be a while before the breed). http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=914 I need more tanks! nev
  17. Female Kenyi are blue with dark bars on the side... you can see a picture of what a female Kenyi should look like here: http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=798 The stripes do not look right to be a Kenyi but it very well could be a Kenyi hybrid with another type of Mbuna... nev
  18. Where did you get him/her from? What was he/she sold as? what does he/she look like when colored up? i would guess a Met. callainos crossed with an Afra variant... just my guess though... nev
  19. In this case I'm willing to bet that the lighting or the camera flash is making the Saulosi look orange. In fact I'm willing to bet that Kyle's females are a bright banana yellow like their mom. I over heard from Albert at gold's that they had a different variant of Saulosi in stock. This was over a year ago when I was looking to add more females to my breeding pair. He had mentioned that the females in this variant were quite orange and I wouldn't want them to mix with the Taiwan Reef variant. Someone in Calgary was/is breeding them and had brought them into gold's as a variant of the normal PS. Saulosi. I have not read anything on a new variant or heard this any where else until now. Do you have a link on the net for this news Neil? My guess is that a hybrid may have been created with the Metriaclima Estherae where the males keep their genetic traits of a normal PS Saulosi but the females take on more of an orange. If there is a true variant coming out of the lake, I may have look into getting some! nev
  20. Are these the saulosi that were spawned just before you sold me their parents? If so... The male looks just like his daddy! nev
  21. I have had no problems with spawning Mbuna as my Saulosi and Rusty's breed quite often. I have never spawned a peacock or a hap. When I got home yesterday my Aulonocara sp. "Lwanda" female was holding. HAPPY DAY! I didn't do anything special to the tank other than a 20% water change and fed them normally before without skipping a day of feeding. The female is still pretty small and I doubt it will be a big spawn but it still counts! For the record it was with a 1 to 1 ratio of males to females. Now if I can only get my Pheno's to do the dance I will have completed the tri-fecta of Mbuna, Peacocks, and Haps. nev
  22. All this color and no females!!! i'm impressed! nev
