  1. Do you have any pics of these guys? nev
  2. Its funny you say that... i have had that comment about my tanks from friends and family about my fish (saulosi/zebras/lwanda's/pheno's/rusties ect). I laugh everytime! nev
  3. Adding a Bristol Nose Pleco would probably be your best best with a tank full of mbuna. I have had sucess with clown pleco's as well with my mbuna but they do not seem to eat as much algae. PM me if you are looking for Saulosi... I'll check this weekend what i have left at my dad's house growing out. I didn't bring them all to the auction and i may have a small group left if you do not want to grow them out from fry size. nev
  4. Some good tips... when i move out and have my own fish room, my contingency plan will be a UPS... just in case! nev
  5. are you saying 9 tanks with a total of 210 gallons? or 9 - 210 gallon tanks totalling 1890 gallons? if so what are the size of the tanks? if i had 9 - 210 tanks i would keep one tank for a show tank and the other 8 (with dividers) and breed a whole bunch of different fish. Saulosi would be my main fish but i would dip into other mbuna/haps/peacocks and others. it would be a dream, but i'd wake up when my wife said 'No'. nev
  6. How big is the phenochilus "Lupingu"? is he showing any flakes yet? From what i have been told... the Tanzania varient is the one with the flakes... keep us posted! nev
  7. Congrats!!!! do they seem to be protective parents? nev
  8. In all of my fish experience I have only used the HOB filters which have all been with Aquaclears... Once my new house is built, I plan on drawing up plans and incorporating a Fish room in my Basement. I kind of like the idea of building a tank in a wall to put on display. I'm toying around the idea of buying a 6ft. or 8ft. tank but need to decide what type of filtration i'm going to have. I would like the clean look of over flows but I have no experience with the whole setup. I have been doing a little reading on the net and on a big tank it looks like a sump would be the only way to go. Just wanted to extend this question to AA's Community to see that the over all general consensus is with filtration. Please share any good or bad experiences with your filtration. Thanks!!! nev
  9. Very nice!!!! Don't worry Jason... you'll be back!!! nev
  10. Welcome!!!!! do you have any tanks running right now? nev
  11. I have only had one 2 bad experiences purchasing new fish... Once i got Ich about 7 years ago that wiped out my commuity tank (tetras/guppies/corys ect...). About 6 months ago i bought some fish from a fish store that will remain un-named(to prevent flaming). I have been really lucky with all my cichlids so far, but it ended up killing a few batches of babies. All is well now but this bad experience left was enough to change my ways. My dad and I have setup a 20 gallon QT tank and are looking forward to the next auction to test it out. I just wanted to see what everyones take on the subject was. If you do use a QT tank please post size and how long you will leave the new fish in before adding to your show tanks. Thanks! nev

    Hello!

    Welcome to the board! nev
  13. For some reason... reading this post reminded me of the 3 eyed fish off the Simpsons... Let us know if that actually works Moose! nev
  14. What sad development. Good luck to the breeders out there! nev
  15. I sold my previous Saulosi F1 Breeding male to Gina a while back. My wife had named him Nelson as he was a bit of a bully (off the Simpsons)... Gina laughed when him sold her as i knew you guys were friends... nev
  16. Congrats! Now if they can just grow out a big to sell at the next auction! nev
  17. The Saulosi are looking great! is nelson hiding in there? nev
  18. Even with another camer that isn't as good, you still take better pictures than me! nev
  19. If they were holding sometime last week i would let them go 15 days and then strip. Give it a shot. If you notice the egg sacs, let the femal pick up her fry and then put her back in the tank. I have had females spit their fry after holding 28 days right up to 32 days so timing should be in your favor... I look at my fish every day before I feed them. If there are any females that are holding i mark down the date (if i have seen the spawn or not) and give it about 20 days before I strip. The last time we went camping i came back and a rusty was holding. I let her hold until she got really skinny and then stripped... It worked out in the end even though i had no clue when she did the deed. Good Luck! nev
  20. It will be hit or miss with your second lab... if I were you I would just let her hold to term and spit on her own. This way you do not stripping her too early and your fry being born with their egg sacs (if you do strip too early you risk looking a higher percentage of your fry). If you monitor the dates of when your fish spawn, you can strip your females around the 20 day mark. I have done this with every female that has held now for over a year and have never had a problem. When I first started breeding I was very hesitant to strip my females with fear of hurting the female. As nervous as I was, I gave it a go and now will never go back. When you strip a female after 20 days she will never have to go full term and starve. After 20 days the fry are free swimming with no egg sacs and the female can eat again. Win/Win for both the mom and her fry. This is IMO... http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/stripping.php This was the best reference article on stripping fish. I followed this and it worked like a charm. nev
