  1. Haven't made it in to Henry's yet but I did press my nose against the glass windows when I was in the city last time. They were obviously closed. What's it like? Theresa
  2. Anybody know anything about a new store in town called (I think) Aquarium Central in the old Western Education site on 111 Ave near the Gimbal eye clinic?about 120th street?
  3. Looks like my Aulonocara masoni male. Are the females plain grey with the typical peacock stripes? Theresa
  4. Heather Edwards, a potter in Bon Accord (google her) hand threw me some tubes that I use as caves. They are about 8 inches long and 1 1/2 wide at the mouth, tapered to a closed end. The inside is smooth but we ran a wood-grain design randomly on the outside and used iron oxide glaze (food safe so fish safe) only on the design. The rest of the exterior is plain and smooth. It was just to break up the tube visually (almost like very shallow fork tines swirled across the surface). Our Queen Arabesque like them. I have not used them in the BN tank as I have other caves in it. You could contact her or a local potter. Theresa
  5. Hey Marko If you want to trade 110 sponges I'd be up for that. Theresa
  6. Try Rally glass and mirror in North Edmonton 476-1978

    I'm Back

Glad to see you back Linda. Theresa
  8. Give Rally Glass and Mirror a try, they do a very good job and are priced better than most shops. We have had them cut a bunch of tops for us. 12125 68 st Edmonton 476-1978 Ted
  9. If anyone is on the lookout for reasonably priced clowns, PJs in Londonderry has some healthy looking individuals on sale for $6 each. They are about 2 1/2 - 3 inches long. I know Golds has fantastic prices but this is the best I have seen them in Edmonton. Theresa
  10. Should do the trick. Your tank doesn't sound like it's overloaded.
  11. You will have some beneficial bacteria in/on the gravel/rocks/plants in your tank. Put the old filter material in your new filter or just sink it in your tank to give the new material a chance to seed. Keep it in tank water in the meantime. If it dries out, the beneficial bacteria will die. If you know someone with a tank, you can ask for a "filter squeeze" where they seed your new filter material with bacteria from their presently running filter. Where are you located? Maybe you can meet someone from AA and they'll lend you a sponge. I work in the south-east part of Edmonton. You can also use a product like Stability to give your tank a chance to catch up. Have you tried cleaning your filter? Sometimes the impellar and shaft and pump casing "gums" up and once it is cleaned, it will run again. Unplug the filter and take the impellar out. Don't get tap water on your filter media but you can clean everything else under running water. If you have a filter brush, you can pull the impellar out and gently scrub the inside of the pump casing and around the shaft and rub the impellar with your fingers. If you don't have a brush, even rinsing under running water and using your fingers sometimes does the trick. Don't get any electrical parts that aren't supposed to be wet, wet. Make sure you brush inside the intake tubes and rinse the inside of the media casing. You'd be surprised how much grunge collects there. Reassemble and cross your fingers. Prime with tank water and put back your filter media. Plug in and... Theresa
  12. My Sp 44 male does not have as much red on his dorsal and a lot more black on his facial stripe but it could be individual variation. The rest looks very similar. Theresa
  13. Don't count your angel eggs before they hatch! Looks like Dad either chowed down or there were lots of unfertilized ones for first time breeders - when I got home only 1/3 eggs left. Removed Dad and hoping for the best with Mom (but 50 little ones to raise will still be lots!). Theresa
  14. Thanks everyone for the replies and PMs. Got some and constructed our hatchery this afternoon. The eggs are bubbling away right now even though the angels won`t be needing any until Friday - got all those other hungry fry to feed! Ted and Theresa
  15. So our angels (female gold veiltail and male diamond koi) spawned for the first time today and now we're wondering who in Edmonton carries eggs, if eggs have a "best before" date on them (freshness affecting viability), what the price range is, and what is the difference between regular eggs and decapsulated eggs. Anyone have any extra to sell? And all you experienced angel breeders out there -- We normally use Golden Pearls fry food and then NLS Grow for our cichlid fry. At what ages can these be used for angels? Thanks in advance. Theresa
  16. Cate, Im sure that Terry will give you all the support you need, buy as many tanks as you have electricity to run is her motto. She has learned from the best, a very nice fellow in SE Calgary who has a few tanks in his basement. I beleive the theory goes, If the downstairs furnace never runs on the coldest day in winter, you have just the right number of tanks. Why heat your house with natural gas when you can do it nice quiet electricity. You can always buy a stand at the auction....now you need a couple more tanks "lets put them in the kitchen". Add a fry tank to the kitchen counter, but it spawns overnight to a few more, "Just for a few weeks honey" said in December. If you need support call any of the numbers on the MTS helpline, they will be there in a flash to give you a ride to the LFS. I used to say it was cheaper than drinking, but I dont say that anymore. Have a great day, Ted

  18. We have used Kordons, Ich Attack, with sucess. It is safe for scaleless fish, available at Big Als. Good luck Ted
  19. It amazing how that will perk a guy up. Ted
  20. Not in our house, dont believe in it ! Terry doesnt want to have fry in the house, no room with only one tank...............I wish ! Kids and I go hungry, but the fry are always fed Ted **** P.S. from Terry (Theresa) So I came to bed late the other night because I stripped 4 females (rock krib, sp. 44 red tail thick lips, albino ruby reds, sunshine peacocks) and was trying to juggle tanks about who can go where with whom and Ted just rolled over and groaned. I`m the one with the addiction problem. I love fry! Its like babies growing up into teenagers though - what do you do with them afterwards
  21. I think it's a bumblebee catfish. I have one that has adopted the narrow gap between a rock and the glass as his cave. He presses his little belly against the glass and looks like he is wedged in there for good. I even "rescued" him by moving the rock once but he keeps coming back so it must feel safe. They are nocturnal and crazy entertaining swimmers if you wait patiently after lights out. I only see this one during the day when he is in his "cave". I got mine from fairdeal. Theresa
