  1. Big Al's ph in most of the FW tanks is anywhere from 7.4 to 8.2. It's usually hovering at 7.6
  2. 3-5 millimeters a year is what marimos generally grow!
  3. The Gar are gorgeous! XD Thanks Hustler so much for taking them!
  4. Thanks gobies et al! I figured the dragons would extremely enjoy the mopani, and I will be getting amanos and some nerites!
  5. Just got back from some LFS's. Can't find amanos anywhere! Found some more dragons though, so methinks 1-2 more dragons in the tank makes a happy dragon family XD As for archers, everywhere else wants like $30 for one archer! I paid that for 2 archers bigger than theirs! >.< It may just end up being a slow thing where I gradally get more archers >.> Got some pipe pricing from a local plumbing store.... now just to sit tight and wait until payday *twiddles thumbs*
  6. Go pick up a cheap generator at canadian tire? or grab some sponge filters from any lfs hook em up to the tank with the air pump.
  7. Someone told me the mopani might a) break apart in low brakich or b)release dangerous meatls into my water. Anyoneknoe if there is any truth to this? I will be boiling the wood a while before it goes into the tank
  8. Wanna come help me wingin it? I am so scared of doing it wrong. Ive read a bunch of tuts, but I am still nervous. I would personally rather pay someone some $$ to come make sure I got all the old off and help me santize it prooperly and resilicone it for me. I would provide the silicone etc. I don't think it would take much more than an hour tops. Speaking of which, I'll go make an ad in the buy sells
  9. Hrm.... never thought of the whole salt and metal thing... I am just worried about siliconing glass braces in.... I like how open the tank is on top *sigh*. Couldn't find camera cord >.> Stocking has been updated: possibly 2 purple spot gobies. They are actually a gudgeon. I've got most of the tank cleaned of silicone now.... Should be able to start resiliconing this upcoming friday (3rd) any advice for resiliconing?
  10. For safety`s sake, I may still go with the metal braces. I will have silicone in between the brace and the tank as well as maybe even some foam board. I`ve decided to re-silicone the tank as well, due to it`s age. It looks like the guy tried re-siliconing it himself, but as far as I have read, old and new silicone dont stick to each other. Cleaned the tank out last night... boy was it disgusting! Pics will follow as soon as I find my cord.
  11. Long story short. 180 isn't a true 180. It`s more like a 122. Whatever, not a big issue, however there are a few possible things wrong with it. Trim`s broken, so I am going to go get a metal brace made for both the bottom and top of the tank so it doesn`t bow. As well, the silicone looks funny to me. After a good clean, I`ll be able to reassess it, but it looks as if someone threw some extra silicone on top, leading me to think it may have leaked at one point... dear god, I am hoping not. Anyways, until the bracing is done, I wont be filling it. When I do fill it, it will be in little 10-20 gallon increments, so that if there is a leak, I can fix it easily. I was originally going to drop the water level for the archers, but only be a 20 inch high tank, I`m not even going to bother. Salinity will start at nothing unfortunately because everything is in fresh right now, but will be acclimatized to 1.005-1.007. Tops will be 1.009. The fake mangrove will look awesome in the tank though, as well as the mopani wood because it will be sticking out of the tank... I`m still looking at sand or possibly even some pool filter sand ( if I can find it). Filtration will be an XP4, fully stocked with foam and bio balls etc. For heat, I will be going with my current 150 watt heater and another 200-300 watt heater, just because this tank is 6 ft long. Hmmm.... not much else to say. Stocking List looks like this: 1-12 inch dragon goby- named Zing. He`s a clever little bugger and will need a tank cover for him,he is an extremely little social guy. Possibly looking into another dragon goby as well, we shall see. 2- Archer Fish (Toxotes Julatrix)- 3 inches each- aptly named Dexter and Brian after a favorite TV show of mine XD 6 Bumble Bee Gobies- Named Gir, Zim, Dib, Gaz,Pig and Waffles As well, I am looking into a rainbow Krib or 2 ( unfortunately only males, store only has males) as well as up to 4 more archers, and possibly some flagfish. With all of these fish, I will be adequately stocked, and I wouldnt even mind adding some more in there considering my filter capacity is at least for a tank twice as big. No overstocking here though! If you have any questions whatsoever, feel free to post in this thread I will try and accurately answer each question as best possible.
  12. How old was the excel? What kind of bichirs? What size? Tank size? Last W/C? Do you have a drop test API kit or a strip testing kit?
  13. Rainbow Kribs- Pelvicachromis pulcher Low salinity brackish water can be defined as water with a specific gravity (or SG) between 1.002 to 1.005. Two sorts of fish can be kept in low salinity water: true brackish water species that need slightly brackish water, and species that are really freshwater fish but happen to be tolerant of slightly brackish water. Among the true, low salinity brackish water fish are orange and green chromides, figure-8 pufferfish, pike livebearers, and knight gobies. Freshwater fish that happen to tolerate brackish water include spiny eels, kribensis, glassfish, the archerfish Toxotes microlepis, and Florida flagfish. Bumblebee gobies and mollies are difficult to place in either group, because in the wild both occur primarily in fresh water. However, in aquaria, they seem to do better when kept in slightly brackish water. Pelvicachromis pulcher (Boulenger 1901), the Rainbow Krib (from the old name, Kribensis, still sold in the pet-fish trade as). Originally from West Africa; southern Nigeria and Cameroon. A perennial favorite in the hobby, with many generations bred in captivity. Males larger (to four inches), better looking than females. Females are shorter, but more rotund. Freshwater to brackish; pH 5-8, dH 5-19, temperature 24-25C. in the wild.
  14. Darn. I just got a pm on another forum saying neale monks (author of brackish water fishes) has said they could go up to 1.004. Hm. Oh well
  15. Its good for indigestion for a few other fish too. I used to mush up peas and put them in the snail jello for my dragons. They always had belly issues before, but after that, nope
  16. Anyone know the answer? I've looked almost everywhere! I'm only thinking of bumping the salinity up to 1.005-1.007 tops
  17. Bleh. I'm getting impatient waiting for this tank. I just want to fill it, get the filter working and throw some old media/stability in there. I picked up my XP4 yesterday and it's in immaculate shape... and for the price I paid, WOW. Got to also check out the guy's discus and his cool arrowana. *jealousy* Anyone know where I can find some archers or dragon gobies in calgary without breaking the bank? I found some at pisces, but at 30 bucks a pop, NO WAY! Di find some purple spot gobies there for rediculously cheap though. as for dragons, Ive been told not to pick anything up from francos, anyone ever had issues with francos stock? I may have to venture off to petsmart *shudder* at least I have a QT tank.
  18. The thing is I paid the deposit on Monday... or Tuesday. Can't remember which day. Anyways, after calling him a bunch I got a hold of him. He says he is still out of town *sigh* so I may or may not get this tank this week. If I don't have it at my house by Friday, I am going to ask for my deposit back because this is getting INSANE. I just want my tank before the weather gets so poopy. *sigh* It was agreed when I gave him the deposit, the tank would be dropped off at my house no later than 4 days after I paid him, because he was going on vacation.
  19. Has anyone else ever been ripped of in a fish tank/ stock related deal? There is a possibility I got ripped off, I will know more in the morning. I am hoping to god I didn't get ripped off. I paid a deposit to hold a tank, and now I cannot get a hold of the guy, and haven't been able to in the last 2 days. I am kinda getting nervous.... Any suggestions? He gave me his business card, but I keep calling the number, and it goes to a cellphone msg that says "This person is not available right now, call back later." I have a receipt for the deposit, I am just getting nervous as I need this tank, it's getting cold and I don't want to risk it breaking in the cold weather. Any suggestions on what I should do?
  20. Unfortunately my tank is not set up yet, or I would pick them all up in a heartbeat >.>
  21. Need opinions on my stock list. Now that I know I am getting a 180, my options are increased! 1- Dragon "Violet" Goby, courtesy of Gobies et al on here, thank you so much! 2- Archer fish 6- Bumble bee gobies These fish are a FOR SURE** Possibilities: 6 Mono Argentus or 2 tiger datniods ( never had dats before, I know they are extremely agressive) maybe some flagfish... a nice school of 6-12? also looking into some silver needlenose gar... 3 of em if I can get a hold of em. I am aware they get 16 " and will eat anything they can get a hold of. Hence the archers should be mean enough to fight back, especially if I get baby gar. I am aware I can't have the gar and the monos or the gar and the flags. I'm only going to be putting the salinity up to about 1.006, and it will be a very slow acclimation ( over a few months) Was also looking for orange chromides... but I can't find any!
  22. XD java fern if I get it, will be attached the driftwood XD forgot to mention
  23. Sales go until monday night. Koi- 50% off Bichirs- 10% off Barbs- 20% off Cichlids- 25% off Skinks- 15% off Tree Frogs- 40% off As for SW not too sure whats on sale...
  24. UPDATE!: 10 gallon tank, I am still going to go with the flourite most likely, not a fan of root tabs, they made my last big tank a mess! Bought some marimo balls (!) Love them! and I am going to be buying some java moss on driftwood asap and I am hoping to get some cherry shrimp in there as well. Possibly going for Java fern as well, but someone told me it doesnt do so well planted in flourite... any truth to that? Not sure about other plants... I may not even go with other plants! Maybe some dwarf grass for the front of the tank.... XD stocking will be: (2) Blue lyre tail guppies (5-6) Rummy nose tetras orrrrr some galaxy/ phoenix raspboras Still undecided!
  25. Do a nice community tank? Or maybe that blur ram tank, or some threadfin rainbows...... crayfish would fit....... urhmmm.... you could even do a brackish green spotted puffer, although I would only suggest one in a tank that size.....
