  1. *hic upppp* just drank the rum ... guess I jusssss takes my chances .... :drunk:
  2. I am willing to bribe you! Three cookies, a half eaten bagel, two buckets of old fish gravel, and a shot of Nicaraguan rum. Oops, just ate the other half of the bagel ...
  3. I saw the most amazing cichlids in Lake Apoyo, Nicaragua! the water was crystal clear and could not believe the amount I could see from the shore.
  4. My Jewels never ate their babies, they are awesome parents. They kept them safe from some really big South American cichlids! I would only separate them if you want the parents to breed again.
  5. I have both my chi in a south window. If you don't have a window, yes, additional lighting would be required. I also put the orchid on top of small lava rock so that it would not be too over watered. I then used some moss I had growing outside to cover the lava rock. The orchid never stopped blooming so I guess it does not mind at all lol.
  6. I have two planted Chi and love them. I have betta in both, the flow is not great enough to bother them. Make sure to buy the cover so you don't find betta chips on the floor. One of the benefits is that you can plant some water loving plants in the fountain at the top. I have an orchid and moss on one and a fern and java moss on the other ... looks amazing!
  7. Nice!! I have been waiting for mine to hatch for ages. I have seen them mating but suspect the eggs are infertile. You have the touch!
  8. Looks great! Your going to very busy this weekend! Curious about the "L" shaped tank.
  9. I have had 5 bamboo in my 110 gallon for about 2 years. They do ok but the tops need to stick out of the tank and tend to go brown after a while. I have new growth on the bottom and it seems fine growing under water. I am sure they would do better if the roots were undisturbed but the fish seem to dig them up. They are great at bringing a bit of green life to a tank where the fish are not plant friendly. I have three growing in my fluval chi and they really don't seem to be doing much. I think I am going to have to find them a new home with better substraight.
  10. Excellent point about CO2 and saran wrap! I intend to eventually take off the saran wrap, I do remove it for a bit longer each day. I purchased a used hang on the wall betta bowl, at the auction, and would love to have a big sword in it. I am also using a few other interesting containers to try a few other plants. I just don't have enough room in my planted tank to allow some of the awesome swords room to grow to potential. Eventually I want to do a small indoor pond with some sort of waterfall.
  11. They are really more white with a pink tinge. Got them from a friend.
  12. I have mine with festivum, silver dollars, Jurupari, Chocolate cichlid, a couple of calm african cichlids (for a bit of color), pink and yellow convicts, assorted catfish and pleco, and T-bar cichlids. I can have quite a variety because they are in a 230g tank.
  13. I am starting a project and am interested in what aquatic plants can grow out of water. I will have the roots underwater and the top part of the plant exposed to the house environment. I have been told that quite a few species will work. I presently have a sword that is doing well. Plant leaves tend to wither once exposed to air so I have tented anubias and am slowly exposing them to less humidity. is there an easier way to acclimate them? Any suggestions would be appreciated! Why am I doing this ... why not!
  14. For now it is a simple system. Pump delivers water to top tank which drains into lower tank, which drains into lower tank, which drains into sump. It is up an running but I still have a lot of tweeking to do.
  15. Thanks for all the help. I now have all the materials to provide filtration for all my bettas. I have almond leaves, will put it in the sump. Hopefully the little guys will be living the good life by Sunday!
  16. Yes, my halfmoons are the ones in trouble. Looks like I will be building the barracks sooner than later!
  17. I have been able to cure it with little problem. I just want it to stop! lol My big red guy, Elton, is the latest victim, just when I was conditioning him to breed!
  18. My Betta seem to get fin rot quite easily. I am puzzled as to why this is occurring. I do water changes every 3 days, feed them a well varied diet, water temp is 72-76 (depending on location). Research shows it is a water quality issue. With a complete water change every three days, I assume this is sufficient. The only thing I can think of is to raise the temp but this will be difficult to do as they are individually housed. Betta barracks are planned with much larger accommodation than the ones I have researched and much warmer temp. It is handy having a hubby that is a plumber! Any suggestions as to what I am missing???
  19. I would reconsider the yellow convicts. They are probably too aggressive, mine hold their own in my 230 gallon south/central cichlid tank. I would stick with apistos or perhaps Badis badis or Dario dario.
  20. I have both, chocolate cichlid and an Uaru. They are both beautiful fish. Both of them would park their butt in front of an all day veggie buffet! Neither species is plant safe ...
  21. Betta are so addictive! They are easy to keep and soooooooooooo pretty! SD females are hard to find and so is anything female that has black. Good luck with your search!
  22. Reduce light intensity, prevents fish from jumping out of open tanks, cichlids love to eat it, and probably nitrate reduction. That was 4 do I win a prize?
