  1. Amazing - a pleco with a fin shaped like a ruler.
  2. It was really neat to watch him dig. He went on for hours cleaning "his spot" out. I currently have 41 inhabitants. I think I am going to add 6 Albino Socolofi and then be done for a while until I have to cull some of the males. By cull you mean offer to good homes right There are a few people that may want males for their all male tanks, but I am pretty sure that's what you meant right ....just jokin', the tank looks awesome!
  3. What have you been doing differently lately? Is there CO2 being put into the tank? Could you give a few more details, like what has been happening to lead up to this? Just a bit of background please.
  4. I have recieved 100 grams of Levamisole, and am willing to share, PM me if interested
  5. WOW! In basement pool and tank in one step. Does your insurance company know what's going on down there? No really, do you have to modify your insurance? From the looks of your mechanical room, you maybe are an electrician? liquid tight flex, omron timer, recyled JB etc. Looks awesome, very well thought out. Would love to have even a fraction of this tank size, thanks for taking the time to document it. I showed my wife this and said "I want one", but she suggested I couldn't afford the water bill after the divorce..... But I'd find a way!!!!lol
  6. Gill flukes maybe, has he been flashing at all?
  7. I just tell my mother that since I started keeping fish I don't have to do drugs, she thinks I'm joking! I am! I prefer to go the volume route as opposed to high numbers, one more tank and my wife will kill me! So at least I know where the line is for me....
  8. Well this little bad boy has been running for about a month. I have zero complaints, packed it full of bio media and let 'er buck. It is incredibly quiet. I am thinking of adding one to my planted tank. Heck of a deal for 130 bucks landed at the door.
  9. Halogen lamps have higher color temperatures than standard incandescent lamps—their light output contains more blue and green. Halogen lamps therefore appear whiter and brighter. Although both types of lamp essentially have a CRI of 100, the higher color temperature of halogen lamps provides more pleasing and vibrant color rendition across a wider range of colors. They will also create quite a bit of heat.
  10. Is it the only Buffalo head in the tank? If not he may be trying to get the attention of a lady. If he is trying to get the attention of a female he will strut his stuff and kind of swim in front of her.
  11. I also have 100 grams on the way. Not really sure if it will get stopped at the border or not, we will see. It will be way less expensive than the route I went last time, and of course I will share. If using the 2ppm dosage 100 grams will treat 10,000 gallons. I really don't need that much. I will keep everyone posted.
  12. 46 Views and no comments! Aaaaaw come on!
  13. A couple of interesting articles that you might be interested in reading with regards to the dosage rate suggested when treating fish for worms using Levasimole HCl. http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/fa091 http://www.loaches.c...hydrochloride-1 It appears that the scientific community considers 2ppm of Levasimole HCl to be an adequate dosage, which works out to 1gr per 100 gallons, not 5gr per 100 gallons as constantly reported on the internet. The 5gr dosage rate originates from Charles Harrison, who is a chemist/ fish hobbyist, that sells Levasimole HCl, not a VMD that specializes in treating tropical fish. (such as Dr. Roy Yanong) http://fishweb.ifas....nong/Yanong.htm Dr. Yanong also suggests that the treatment duration be 24 hrs, not 3 days as currently suggested by Charles Harrison. It appears that Charles got his info from a killi hobbyist (Ken Laidlaw), that as far as I can tell has no real qualifications for treating fish for disease etc beyond the hobbyist level. Also, originally Charles/Ken recommended only treating for 24 hrs, not 3 days. (then repeating 2-3 weeks later) Last night I treated one of my recently acquired fish (a 4+ inch female flowerhorn) with your 55 gallon dose, and within 30 minutes she went to the bottom, appeared stressed, and is still on the bottom this morning. Other than I felt she could potentially have worms (no visible signs, just a hunch so I was using the better safe than sorry logic) this fish has been eating like a horse & acting very healthy. If what the Dr. states is correct, I just treated her with 5X the recommeneded dose. This is most likely whey some people state online that Levasimole treatments were hard on this fish, and the fish showed visible signs of stress during treatment. The good news is, using 1gr per 100 gallons, I now have enough meds on hand to treat both tanks twice. Thanks again!
  14. I have a beautiful male Copadichromis azereus, full color, living in a planted tank with phantom tetras, angels and cory's. The only problem is he is blind. I would have euthanized him when he was young, but my wife put her foot down. He has been in this tank for 6 months, he eats fine, we drop food into a particular corner and he eats. I thought he would have starved long ago. A rather cruel way to go really, but putting him down despite my wifes objection would have possibly gotten me euthanized. He is fully colored up, and as far he is concerned he is the man! Too bad there are no females in the tank to see him. He's all dressed up and has nowhere to go. Now what am I to do with him? Dunno? He has grown on my wife. So anyone who is married knows what that means.... Anyone else have have a fish they have wrecked and don't have the heart to do the deed?
  15. If you buy the same model of filter you could just swap the filter media over and voilà. If it is a canister you can transfer the media into the new baskets. Or if you are planning to go from a HOB filter to a canister you can squeeze the media out in the tank and throw the old filter material inside the baskets until the bacteria grows on the new media. Hope this helps,
  16. Maybe you should have followed the law, it's there for a reason! There are plenty of good products here in Alberta to feed your fish. Thanks for pointing out that our laws are based on useful information, not just whimsically thrown out there.
  17. I think we get a post up and going about LFS Diseases with pics and use decoder rings to decipher it!!!On second thought, nevermind.....
  18. Patrick @ gillsnfins used to sell it too, although I don't see it on his site anymore. May be good to check with him. Spencer Jack @cichlaholic.com sells it too.
  19. I got my dog from an organization called paws and claws in Red Deer, they go up to reserves, grab the pups and spay the mothers. Lots of different types of mutts. My big guy Loki looks like a Yellow Lab Husky cross. Awesome dog. They only charge a nominal fee. This helps pay to have the program run, all dogs are fostered in peoples homes, so they get to know them, so If your not in a hurry you can find a good match for your personality and home. Here is a link http://www.pawsandclawsanimalrescue.ca/ Good luck
  20. WOW! I haven't seen these little guys before, I had no Idea they had so much blue, or so much bling! Good Buy!
  21. We all are here for a common goal people, to share knowledge and interact with others that are either more experienced than ourselves or to help those who are not. Enjoy this hobby, sickness, addiction or however you wish to label it. From a legal point of view AA could have problems if store "x" was upset that they are being slagged on a service that has access to thousands of potential customers, this is the problem, if you wish to bash a store by word of mouth....well knock yourself out. This is not the proper avenue for a persons personal opinions and experiences in a negative manor. If you want to PM a whack of people to b*tch about a store, go for it, but I feel there are better things to do with your spare time.... I in the past have had a bout of disease that wiped out a ton of my fish, this was a very reputable store and the fact of the matter was when I left the store they looked great. There are allot of shoulda coulda woulda's that come up in hind site, maybe slower stock additions, better quarantined tank times. Who knows. It is what it is. Lesson learned. Most of us didn't wake up fish savvy. It is a long painful learning process that takes years. It's just too bad that our lessons are learned at the expense of beautiful little critters that we think we can lock in a glass box and have them flourish. We should always assume fish have some sort of disease and that the stress of being bagged and moved will kick it off. The owners of these great little stores do their very best to supply us with a good product, but the nature of the beast is that they need to move inventory. They cannot quarantine fish for 16 plus weeks to be sure there is no underlying conditions, they would need huge spaces and this overhead would add to the bottom line. So unless you would like to pay 93 bucks for a guppy accept the process with it's flaws, and get a damned quarantine tank
  22. Went to gold's to stock my tank, had heard good things I bought 24 fish from Dennis, Copadichromis Azereus and German Red's exactly the same thing cloudy eye, flashing, bulging eyes. Did water changes like a mad man, lost most of them, showed kind of like velvet. Tried a million things. Never figured out what it was. Gill flukes? Velvet? Were the first fish in my cycled tank. It never did a mini cycle, ammonia etc stayed at zero. Almost $300.00 worth down the toilet. Called and spoke to Dennis, kind of got the impression he knew what was going on, also the language barrier didn't help either. A little hard to just stop in when I live in red Deer. Who knows....will never give them my cash again and will advise anyone who cares to listen not too. Just my 2 cents
  23. Where in Red Reer were you catching em? I have never heard of them before.....my kids would be all over that. Details would be appreciated. Do I need a net? dynamite?
  24. What kind of zebra cichlid are you speaking of? There are Red Zebra's, Lobochilotes labiatus, some people call convicts by this name too. Could you give us scientific names, Zebra is pretty vague. The electric yellows and the Rusty's should get along fine. pseudotropheus sp. "Acei"is another hardy fish you may like. If you look on the web for cookie cutter cichlid setups tanks there is some good ideas that can be found there. Here is one link for you. Shelly's are cool, there are some pretty cool fish available out there, but there is never a guarantee certain fish will jive together regardless of what they are supposed to do. Good luck, and enjoy the journey. http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/cookie_cutter_29g.php http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/cookie_cutter_40g.php
