  1. Those are some nice bichirs there! You should put up some more pics of them :P (They're like my favourite fish of all time now xD)
  2. His plants seem to be flourishing off of them though. The fixture I found is running 2x 10000k and 2x actinic blue lights. So I'd have 4x 10000k+4x blue. Would this sufficiently grow plants? I can always replace some of the bulbs at a later date, or trade the bulbs I get with them I suppose. But both fixtures would run me about 160 dollars that with and they come with 4 LED moonlightings each which is a plus. That's hard to pass up since 1 fixture val showed me costs 150 dollars alone.
  3. Val what color lights should I go with? That has me even more confused. Should I just stick with plain ol' white? :S
  4. So with 8 bulbs I'm probably pretty good? Specially if I run C02 through it? I don't really want to go 8 bulbs on each side. That sounds like it'd be expensive :P. Plus what is the likelihood of piking up some 36" quad bulb fixtures second hand? And what price should I shoot for lol?
  5. I'm currently trying to piece together my 180 gallon tank, and I'm currently looking at which fixtures I wanna buy for it. The tank itself is roughly 73" long and 23" deep. I was planning on going with two 36" T5 fixtures. But where I get lost is if I should pick up a fixture that houses 4 bulbs, or 2 bulbs. I want to run a pretty heavily planted tank so my eels can have lots of hiding places. I'm just wondering if running 8 bulbs on this tank is a bit of overkill or will the 4 bulbs be plenty enough for plant growth?
  6. Hey guys! I managed to finish staining the stand finally! And I cut the lino after it dried! I haven't quite figured out how I'm going to get the lino to sit on the sides as well. As I don't wanna try and glue them there, that's just way to much work for myself! I'm thinking maybe a trip to rona to find a trim or something to go around to keep the lino edges down might be my next step. Anyways here the stand as of last week! And here is the stand once we got the stain to the color we wanted (The picture hides the redish hue it has) and cut the lino! And please forgive me I forgot to shut the doors on the stand so it doesn't look as pretty as it actually is lol! :P It should all be done by tomorrow night hopefully! Then I can get to work on getting the tank itself clean, installing a 3d background from Gills N Fins once I decided which one I want. And of course getting some lights, an fx5, and working on a nice DIY LED lighting from the DIY section here on the board! Then down to aquascaping. Still a ton left to do before I get it running :P
  7. On the long road to achieving my bachelor degree I have been a tasked to take yet another English course on top of the 2 I've taken already. Yet this class has taken a slight turn for the better for me! I've been assigned to write an research essay on government regulation in some field I enjoy. (Obviously to lean towards one side or the other for/against) My topic of government regulation in regards to the pet industry (specifically fish!) has been approved! I was just wondering if any fish store owners, importers, exporters, or industry related people here on the board would mind sending me your view of how government intervention(preferably regarding livestock) has affected your business, your business processes, bottom lines, or any affect it has had or hasn't had ofcourse. Also your opinion on the topic as to why it is important, or why it has had a negative effect in your view would be by far GREATLY appreciated! Of course my views on the topic may differ from your own, and if I do choose to use your information you choose to provide, I solemnly promise to present it fairly, and simply as a counter argument to my own. Your words will not be presented in a way to warp what you have said, I will keep the information as my teacher will need to read it, and ensure that your tone or attitude towards the subject is presented as it was given to me! If you wish to remain anonymous any identifying markers will be removed( I will just present it as a local Calgarian fish importer), though if you don't mind having your name and position referenced in my works cited that is great for me too! It makes my work seem much more credible given that you'll be information from a well garnered source! (How long you've been in the fish industry would be a great help too as it'll make your word sound even more authoritative)! Any help anyone could provide me would be great help, this information will be used solely for a research paper, so it won't really be published or anything other then if it's good enough it may be used as a teaching tool by the teacher. Though in sending me such information you agree to allow me to incorporate it into my research paper and include your name and position (Unless anonymity is requested as previously stated!). Any help would be greatly appreciated guys! Help a poor student get the A he's been gunning for after all these years of English essays! You can post them here as comments if you'd like or send me a pm,. If it's to large for a pm you could email it to me as well! Just pm me to request it!
  8. A quick 2 second fix for your cynobactera? Ethromycin. Comes in packets for about 20$ :P. It killed my cyno in just a few days. I don't believe plecos will touch ethro will they? I thought they prefer algae. Anyways, I still say a snail. It adds relatively little to the bioload, is a great fit for a 30 gallon sized tank, and you can get em that are super small like the nerite snails. I do also agree with angels needing atleast a 55. They get rather large for a 36 gallon or whatever you have there, IMO. I think it'd be a much more beneficial to stick to smaller fish like tetras for a tank that size.
  9. Jvision raises a great point. I've seen tons of parasites, and they're generally internal or if they are external you'd see them attached to the fish most likely like Ich. Worms from the gills, swollen red bumps, or swollen anal areas are great indicators of parasites, but little worms in the filter doesn't necessarily mean anything. They could just be nematodes. Have you done anything out of the normal lately? Possibly to large of a water change without adding a bacterial supplement? Or what's your heat temperature at? I know I recently had to readjust all my heaters because they weren't keeping the tanks at the right temperatures anymore because it's gotten colder out. I'd look for other symptoms possibly before wasting any money trying to kill off harmless nematodes.
  10. Or a snail? It'd add less to his bioload and do just as good a job of cleaning his tank of algae! And they're are a ton of snails to choose from as well.
  11. Even still if your feeling you want something cut for you, you don't even need a saw, if you go to Rona (for sure) and Home Depot they have cheap wood there, and just bring the dimensions you need and they'll even cut em for ya. That's what I did, all I had to do was add the door handles, magnets, and hinges. lol I like hassle free :P
  12. Yeah I have a stand designed similar to that for my 180 gallon lol! If you look at my topic in general forum I have some pictures of me bringing it from its 1980s look to something more presentable! You can make them very pretty, I just finished my last coat of stain and have to do a little more work, but I'm almost complete and that design is very easy to make pretty lol.
  13. Haha! Yeah that exercise bit it a real killer sometimes, I feel ya :P But I agree with her, as long as you haven't got any turbulent sensitive fish you should be okay. I'd hate to see throwing my axolotl in a tank with that much movement lol. He has troubles when I move my hand through the water simply cleaning the tank on the other half of my 50 gallon lol. Let alone with that much current haha :P. On the reverse of that though my eels in the 90 seem to love my bubble wall, they love to swim into the bubbles, and just let it float them up and along lol.
  14. An detailed description about what the bump looks like might be helpful as well, the image is a little blurry, and I'd hate to see you waste money on a simple scratch, or lose your fish because someone gives you wrong advice.
  15. I`d have to agree with winging it. I find trim the be a little ugly sometimes, and have tanks without it. As long as the tank itself has the silicone done properly, you should be fine. The top trim on my 180 and 90 is just sitting on it, and isn`t even silicone`d on and those tanks have been fine!
  16. I agree that they are gorgeous, but the price is going to be ridiculous. I'm all for paying a little extra to get a newer modern looking tank. Though I feel like they're getting away with highway robbery with what fish stores generally charge for these little tanks.
  17. I don't know how we managed it with our schedules this week, but me and my girlfriend, with some help from our buddy have managed to get a nice bit of work done on the stand again. We have a new linoleum on it, it's still settling so we haven't cut it down and made it fit the edges proper yet, but it should be done it two or three more work sessions. We also managed to get 1 coat of stain on it, and it already looks ten times more beautiful! It won't be long till that piece of a stand is actually presentable :P Installed some doors: Put some handles on the doors, and started working on the top of the stand. After a coat of stain: Probably another 1 or two coats of stain to go, the doors are all function able with little magnets and everything now! And after that to cut the rest of the linoleum to fit properly, and it should finally be done!
  18. At todays ACE auction I picked up two new Italian newts. I also picked up a new 5 gallon tank, and a nice light fixture, and I started a nice little planted tank with the new newts. It looks gorgeous so far! I wish I was better at taking photos cause these don't do it justice. This is the tank now! (Still have to add a black back ground to it and a moss ball :P) The newts seem to love it
  19. Its the first ACE auction I ever attended. I felt it was a little long, but overall I loved it. And I now have my Italian newts set up in a nice new planted tank! All of which I bought at the auction, It was so cheap and I got so many plants, so so many plants haha. Was a little embarrassing when I realized I was bidding against my girlfriend at one point. I just really wanted my newts :P
  20. He's gotten pretty thick since the last time I saw him lol. I'm not sure the other one that came in at the same time as your guy, made it . But when he gets bigger you should totally put some more pics up!
  21. Aye! I forgot to mention I finally picked up the tank about 2 weeks ago! It's in great shape, the tank anyways, but the stand itself was horrendous, so me and the girlfriend decided to tear its finishing apart, and were going to refurb the stand! Its coming along great so far! Heres what it looked like to start sort of (We already ripped the main part of the linoleum off): Girlfriend ripping off the tackiness :P : End of day when we got all the glue off the top and a good chunk of panelling off : Start of day 2: After we got the panelling off, we decided the back actually looked nicer then the front! So we converted it! Heres the back (Or what use to be the front now!): Filled some major holes and screw holes on the new front : End of day 2(Accidental NLS ad :P):
  22. Wow, I have no input as to what she is; but, she is gorgeous! Like wow. Her colorus are so awesome! That's a beautiful looking fish you got there .
  23. Seems a little rough of him to spill that all on you, specially if he could clearly see you were selling such hybrids. Though I won't disagree about the colored fish thing, I am completely against dying my fish, but as far as hybrids go, you know I don't really see the issue. A ton of foods we eat, or that are eaten world wide are hybrids or line bred. Alberta's beef industry is full of line breeding, choosing the right males to produce huge animals. I mean as long as it's done in a humane way, that doesn't impede the animal or hurt them (Aka. Turkeys first being bred to the point their legs would break because their chests getting to big). And I don't see infertility as a form of cruelty, unless your going in there and cutting em off yourself. But that's just my opinion. And I don't think he was very fair to attack you like that, even if it was unintentional.
  24. Haha I know that gar! He's such a nice guy (I know the owner of AD pretty well :P), he's looking really good in your tank! I'm glad to see he's got a nice new home
  25. I think I'd be terrified if I ever had to stick my hand in the tank! Those are some sharp looking teeth lol!
