  1. I was just playing around with my axolotl and giving him some more hand feeding lessons, when I noticed on the top of his waters surface. There are these itty bitty little bugs or mites it seems that just hop like a cm distance at a time. They stay at the top, and only on the surface of the water. They don't seem to be hurting anything, or my axolotl, But I was just wondering what in the world they were lol. I haven't come across these little guys before. Anyone have a clue what they are?
  2. a 240 gallon? You know what that sounds like to me? Time to buy a MONSTER fish :P Get something that grows huge and is just super awesome to watch :P
  3. Maybe it is a weeksii, it has a really large head lol. And so all those bichirs will get along fine in just a 180 eh? If that's the case my girlfriend will be thrilled that we can get a bunch more eels :P Oh and Wingin' I will be using established filter media not the whole filter itself. I might grab some water from the other tanks I have in the house with the next water change I do and throw some of that in there too. I also planned on using a bit of gravel from both the tanks, Not a 100% of it but a chunk from my 55 and my 90 gallon, then the rest new. Though I'd still prefer to let it sit and cycle for 2 weeks or so anyways.
  4. A weeksi is what my brown girl was sold to me as, I really have no clue if she is or not, she doesn't really look like anything or fit any of the descriptions. Do they all get along Ray? I mean the ornate is considerably bigger, does he pick at the smaller ones or does he just let them be? Lol I have a whole lot of learning to do when it comes to these huge tanks :P
  5. Pagani I'd be all over it if my eels were big enough. They're not near full grown yet, a arowana that size would devastate the poor guys. Plus I still need to get the tank and get it cycling :P
  6. Hey! I`m so excited, this week I`ll be picking up my new 180 gallon tank! I`ve never had such a huge tank before so this is going to be really exciting. Though I`m not sure where I stand at how full I already will have the tank when I move my eels over. Right now I have An Delhezi Bichir, an albino senegal, and another girl that I can`t seem to classify, but sorta looks just like a brown Delhezi. They all currently are cuddling in my 90 gallon, which I`ve been told would be okay for the three of them. Given I want to move them to the bigger tank, my girlfriend wants to maybe get another eel or two. I`m just wondering does that leave any swimming room for something? Or about how full would a 180 be with 5 bichir eels (That grow to roughly 15inches each). And If I do have room! I'd like some suggestions in what I can throw in there that will swim nicely on top and really spice up the tank!
  7. It doesn't look like Cynobacteria to me. In all my cases of coming across it in the tank world, it's more black. And I've never really seen it float or bubble like that, it likes to coat plants and ornaments and gravel. If it is Cyno, erythromycin kills it pretty quickly, I'm not sure how erythromycin will treat your plants, but it sure as hell kills Cyno lol.
  8. Oh god, he's so big and beautiful lol. Truly jealous! Great looking eel
  9. What size of bags do you need roughly? And how many? I use to work at a LFS and when my boss decided that he wanted to be a doucher, I basically told him to keep his job and to place it somewhere quite shady. Back to my point, I decided to take a good quantity of fish bags before I left, of all different sizes. I just recently moved but I'm sure I still have most of them downstairs I could probably give you some if I find them downstairs in my fish box.
  10. I really like these two lines, because to me they seem counter productive when it comes to a political sense. If you can't mail your MP to tell him that the new regulations are not to the standard they should be, or have HUGE loop holes, how are they suppose to fix it? Rome may not have been built in a day, but I can sure as hell guarantee there was complaining. The quickest way to bring this program to a higher standard, would be to bring your issues to the people who "you put there" to fix it for you. That's what an MP is for, that's what a government is for, to run our country the way the general population seems fit. (Or at least the voters) I can agree fully with you that this regulation is a step in the right direction, and that it's going to need sometime, lots of time, before it can be up and running and working like it should. But I also agree with RD that in its current form, it needs a lot of work before it's going to be worth the paper its on, it has to many loop holes. And with such educated people like yourself and RD, I think writing a couple letters to the government to inform them of such loop holes, or problems would be a step in the right direction, and more productive to your cause. "Democracy means simply the bludgeoning of the people by the people for the people."
  11. I have a friend here on the forum that I use to work with, and we were experiencing quite similar reactions out of our fish, and a bit of a die off from our tanks, so he phoned the treatment plant here in the city, and it seems every once in awhile the city seems to up the amount of chasers(Chlorine and such) in the water, beyond the normal amount, Or so we were told by the guy on the phone when we phoned anyways! He advised we just use twice the amount of prime indicated to get rid of the extra chemicals. We just did smaller water changes 20-30% weekly and up the amount of prime, and it stopped almost a 100% of the die-off and stopped a lot of the weird behavior we experienced after the water changes we were doing. Maybe it'll work for you too? Or you might just have a weird fish :P
  12. The seahorses look awesome. But I love how your corals look! :P
  13. That pond is gorgeous! From following the pictures from the beginning I really couldn't guess how it was going to turn out, but it's like 100x prettier then I thought it was going to be! Great work and Cudos to you, that is one fantastic pond!
  14. Smith do you know if you guys can do store transfers on livestock? Or am I going to have to make a trip out to Calgary ? lol.
  15. I fixed that actually Randy, and then added a tank size I felt would be a little more appropriate. It did only say a 10 gallon. And No you are most definitely right Evolution but with the smaller the volume of water once that fish gets bigger and bigger, the water will become rank quicker and quicker, and unless your doing huge daily water changes, then your small tank will probably stunt that gorgeous fish. But no you are right I suppose, but you can't tell me you agree with sticking such a fish that could grow so big, in such a little container, he'd barely have room to move.
  16. I don't think there are many 15 gallons that are over 24inches long. If it's suppose to grow to 25 they're wouldn't even be room to turn around or stay straight, expect to stunt the poor fish in a tank that small. Silly wikipedia.
  17. I have my self an albino senegal bichir (My favourite) and a Delhezi. They're quite the characters but from my experience they will eventually stop eating when they're full and not stuff themselves. Maybe I was just lucky but they did it from the time I got em, they'll just leave the excess and won't bloat themselves, and if I used any feeders they'd eat them as they could catch them. Things like Danios and guppies seem to give them a little more trouble as their quicker, but like said earlier if it's slow moving it's chow in seconds. My eels are too slow over predators to really overfeed themselves. Mine also seem to LOVE worms, like they destroy them, specially the wigglers
  18. I have a flat stone Darren that I have set up as a lean-too for my axolotl but he much prefers his hut or hollowed log to play in. Just swing by the house and grab it. (It's got a bit of algae coating, nothing serious though.)
  19. An ornate bichir in a 50 gallon? Do you plan on upgrading to a bigger one? Cause that eel is gonna get huge (60cm/25inch possibly). If the rainbow only maxes at 7 to 8" I dunno how well they'll do together long term, my bichirs are not suppose to get nearly as big as an ornate and they already harass the fish I had in with them that are an inch or two smaller then they are, let alone when they max at full size. They're pretty inquisitive fellows when it comes to food and like to nip at most things. I don't think these two will make nice. Specially in a tank that size where the wolf won't have much room to run.
  20. I wonder if after years of breeding will the kok ever reach a point that's detrimental to the fish's overall well being from being too big, like we've done with our turkeys. From some of the veterinary studies I've done through the U of A and many of the turkey and chicken farms I've visited, they're isn't a turkey made for market (Unless it's wild) that can naturally breed anymore because it's breasts are too big! All the females have to be artificially inseminated, not to mention all of the horror stories of incorrectly choosing traits, breasts to big for the legs to handle resulting in the legs snapping, etc. I guess the question I'm asking is when is it too big?
  21. Lol it looks hilarious I won't lie, but funny enough as vicious as it is, I was scouring the internet last night and found an article about a 14 year old girl and her dad fishing in a boat, and even though not a man eating vicious piranha that is uber huge, but a barracuda jumped out of the water and latched into her arm, and she needed 32 stitches or something. Talk about fish fighting back. lol (You should see the image of the wound holy cow. If anyone is interested look for Girl attacked by barracuda on boat in google, and hit images you can see the wound, its brutal :S)
  22. Haha no unfortunately they don't stay 2 inches long, they get quite a bit bigger (anywhere from 7-14 inches) :P But I would recommend getting one they're awesome friggin awesome!
  23. That's an interesting thought right there, I haven't really thought about it much at all. But in practice I try to avoid wild caught fish in principle because ones bred and raised in our city water tend to have better survival rates for myself. Though I have some fish that are definitely on the endangered list, but as evolution said a lot of fish are saved cause of our hobby, so I guess that means I avoid Wild Caught, but don't mind owning endangered species lol.
  24. Haha thanks Smithj427! I doubt there are too many of us around with an Axolotl named Taco, so you probably know exactly who I am, specially if you sold me a goldfish just recently lol. Carl73 do you know what colour morphs you have and what size they're running? T-man do you happen to know the cost or remember the sizes of them? I might have to make a trip to Calgary to get myself a green one lol.
