  1. Looking for a Grindal worm culture. Will be at the auction tomorrow. Thanks
  2. Marineland has great customer service. Won a heater as a door prize a couple years ago that malfunctioned. Explained the situation to the young lady who had me email a picture with the cord cut off. They didn't have a replacement to send me, so she sent me a cheque. Only took 6 days .... Love those US dollars.
  3. That's the ones...........Thank you
  4. Got some Killies at the ACE spring auction and managed to lose the bag before I wrote down the name. I think they were referred to as the "Christmas Killie" Anyone know their real name? Google was no help. Thanks
  5. Thanks for the info, Dactylo. I plan to convert a couple of my sponge filters and give this stuff a try.
  6. Looks like a Procambarus Marmorkrebs .....self cloning crayfish. If it is you will know in about 30 to 45 days.
  7. Anyone using moving bed filters? I am looking for a Canadian supplier of the media (K1, Hel-x or BioHome). Thanks
  8. 67Elmo, were you charged GST because you hadn't stayed in the States long enough? I have never paid GST on any of the fish I brought across. If you are successful I would be interested in getting a few to cross with my koi veil tails. That high coverage of color and veil tails would be amazing. Really great looking fish ....... Good luck in breeding.
  9. Charis, and others The water coming out of your R/O membrane is NEVER likely to be zero. Your TDS level will depend on what minerals and contaminants are present in you input water The DI unit that you are going to add to your system WILL reduce your TDS level to ZERO !!! You can add all the shut off valves you like. I don't know what kind of system you are running, but both the systems I use came with self piercing saddle clamps that attach to your copper cold water line and supply water to the R/O unit. You can shut off the input water using that valve. There is also an automatic valve that controls the water going into and out of your R/O membrane chamber. There should be some sort of restrictor valve on the waste water line. This valve will normally be closed and only opens will the system is in operation and there is enough pressure in that line. Both my units also have a manual valve on the restrictor valve that can be opened to flush the system. If you run your R/O water into a pressure tank, the tank will control the operation of your system. I am on well water, so I use booster pumps and pressure tanks on both my systems. One system also has 2 - 50 gallon storage tanks controlled by float valves connected to the pressure tank. I never added any shut off valves to either system and the first has been in operation for over 6 years and the second for all most 3. Unless your units are of a completely different design, the only shut off that I can see any reason to add, would be on the input side of the unit, located close to the unit to use to shut off the water supply when you change filters.
  10. Your golds are likely old enough. I didn't think that my golds were old enough either, and the electric blue I got the end of June as fry 1/2 - 3/4 inches I was not actively trying to breed them, which is why they were housed with angels. I didn't even have a rock with the electric blues, they used the sponge filter base for the nest. I don't worry to much about numbers but I measured the PH and Temp for you. German Blues PH 6.7 76F Gold 6.3 79F Electric Blue 6.3 78F Water changes and frozen bloodworms 3-4 times a week. Good luck with breeding.
  11. Gold Rams that I got at the Edmonton Fall Auction spawned 2 weeks ago, but lost all the fry to the pair of angels that shared the tank. German Blues hatched on Friday, got about 30 fry that seem to be doing well. Now my Electric Blues spawned in a tank they share with 4 other rams and 10 toonie plus sized blue chocolate angels. When I discovered the nest there were already some wigglers, so I sucked all the eggs and fry up with a gravel vac. Must be close to 100 electric blue fry hatched out now.
  12. You interrupted the spawning process. The shortest period between spawning that I have seen is 6 days, usual period is 7-14 for mine.
  13. At the convention this spring the speakers talked about using oak leaves to condition water and to protect eggs from fungal attack. I heard a few people say that they didn't know where to find oak leaves in Edmonton. If anyone is interested in trying oak leaves please let me know. I plan on attenting the auction Sunday, and would be happy to bring you some leaves. Ed
  14. Is there a time table or schedule of events posted some where? Need to know how early I have to leave home Saturday AM. I would hate to be late.....Thanks .
  15. Sorry for the delay. Note the large dorsal on female at the bottom
  16. I have some "Full Black Large Dorsal" guppies that are decendants of fish originally imported from ATFG in Thailand. The females are larger than the males and most of the females will grow very large dorsals just like the males. If you are interested in blacks, let me know and I can catch a pair and post a picture.
  17. I understand the soft water being good for the eggs and aids in hatching (common for many soft water fish), but when do you start to move the fry from 100% RO? Or do you raise these fish in RO for life? Does that make selling them difficult - I'd imagine it'd be easier to move fish that are acclimated to local water conditions? jvision, 100% R/O, with 30 to 50% water change weekly to help prevent PH crashes Acclimation has not been a problem. I have sold black cories in Regina, Saskatoon, Edmonton and Calgary. To date no one has reported any problems. Please note that I live in a rural area in Saskatchewan, my local water is VERY HARD well water, which is the number 1 reason for R/O. I acclimate purchases slowly over a 6 to 8 hour time frame. You can do it faster if the PH is close. My R/O is at 6.7. I don't think I have ever lost a fish during the acclimation process. If you have any concerns setting up a drip system is likely the safest.
  18. I agree that the fry chances of survial are small. I have never found any black fry in my tanks (they are all bare bottom which I am sure reduces their chances even more). I do however remove the eggs -- most BY HAND -- but I have also scraped some off using a razor. Unlike Syno321 I have not found the eggs all that fragile, it maybe due to the fact that all my blacks are bred and raised in R/O water. To hatch, the eggs are placed in cheap plastic 'Glad' 24oz containers of fresh R/O water (1 drop methylene blue in 2 liters of water). As the fry hatch I move them to new 24oz container of just fresh R/O water. From this point the fry get 100% water changes daily (well - most of the time). At about 7-10 days they are moved to the 4 cup size. When they out grow the 4 cup size I move them into commercial cottage cheese containers, add air, and reduce water changes to 100% every second day. I am also using this system for my angels. One note: The room is heated to 75 degrees Good luck with your eggs, hope you get some fry.
  19. Try a laboratory or medical supply store. You may have to buy the whole case. I use the plastic disposable 3ml size. (about 6' long). Very handy and they stand up very well.
  20. Congratulations to ACE on another great auction !!!!! Managed to sell a few fish and picked up some really nice additions to the collection. Also got to meet and talk "fish" to couple of very nice members of the forum. Really enjoyed meeting you and look forward to meeting again. Even the bad road going home didn't spoil our day at the auction ..... thank you ACE Don't know about the Feb. auction, but plan to make it to the Convention and show/auction in May
  21. If I can make it to the auction I will try to bring some. have a few other cories and veil angels.
  22. For the eggs I hatch artificially, I use Methylene Blue in R/O water. Increasing the temp will cause the eggs to hatch faster (less time to fungus). REMOVE any bad eggs when they turn white, they will fungus and it will guickly spread to the good eggs. For the eggs I let the parents hatch, i remove the slate when the eggs start to hatch and the fry are still attached. With young stock you may need to let them have a few batches before they "GET IT RIGHT". Good luck
  23. Welcome back to the hobby. I too am into angels, killies, swordtails, guppies (pure strains) and lots of cories
  24. Welcome to AA ... From another Sask member
