  1. Currently have spawns of, on the CAS BAP Krytolebias marmoratus Xenotoca eiseni Skiffia lermae Girardinus mettalicus Asolene spixi Cherry red shrimp Have collected eggs from the following annuals, waiting for the hatch out date Nothobranchius Kafuensis - hatching roughly Feb. N. Korthausae – also roughly Feb. Collecting eggs from Aphysemion Australe 'orange' (aquarium strain) M. Praecox (dwarf rainbow) Lacustricola Maculatus 'red' Working on spawning or planning to in the near future. Double black Angels Xiphophorous maeyi SuperRed Severums. Or red dot. Or red stripe, depending on who you talk to Apistogramma Bitaeniata Jenynsia Onca L204 Xiphophorous Montezumae Simpsonichthys Santanae (set up in a spawning tank this week, will check peat in a couple days) small spawns still working on: Lacustricola katangae Edit: updated
  2. That was excellent info Werner. Wish I'd been able to attend that CAS meeting, sadly I had to golf in Phoenix that day! Edit: spelling
  3. Thanks. I picked up some gasket material from an automotive shop, then this morning found a place that still sells parts for Polar water distillers (they went bankrupt) so I will be able to get the original parts. I'd rather have them, then test whether the automotive gasket is safe for fish. Likely it's the same stuff, but you only get to find that out the hard way!
  4. So just finishing up rebuilding the Polar water distiller that I bought at the ACE auction. Needs a couple microswitches and a new gasket for the float lever arm that comes out of the tank to shut off the water flow. The microswitches should be easy to get as they are standard switches from Honewell, just a simple matter of ordering them. However I just found out this week that Polar water distillers has gone bankrupt, so I am likely going to have to make my own gasket. Not a big deal, but if anyone could point me in the direction of where I could get gasket material in Calgary? It is that grey colored material. It must be high temperature and fairly innocuous - fishy safe even! any suggestions?
  5. I am more impressed with the accuracy of her landing!
  6. I'm calling mine 'fishguts'. I haven't decided what it will be yet, but that is what I am calling it.
  7. Good fibre for their diet! Saw some amazing Amano shrimp last night. Now I want some! Anyone in Calgary raising them? Are their multiple color strains of them? These ones had a goldish/yellow line down their back.
  8. One rjsomers marble angel to another: "what do you call slow mollys? Lunch"
  9. How are they with eggs? I have been putting a cherry shrimp (sorry, don't recall the species name) in with all my killie eggs to keep the fungus down, as they won't touch the eggs, but keep them nice and clean. Do the amanos scavenge eggs or are they good with them too? I tried a shrimp with some of my cichlid spawns, but the cichlids thought it was a treat! (just kidding. I didn't put them in the tank)
  10. I've put Bolivian rams in with those types of Fish. They tend to mostly color up when they are defending their 'rock' though. Never seen them get aggressive with anything but their own species, and usually just some good natured jaw wrestling.
  11. what is this large light bulb doing over my head? ah. it's from me finally getting the moral of the story! haha!
  12. ruh roh. so, some alleged person may or may not have just flown back from Phoenix, and may or may not have had 3 baggies of killie fish eggs in their carry on bag. This person may have read the canadian customs card and seen nothing about fish or fish eggs on the list, so didn't indicate same in any way.... They may have indicated the cost of same on the card in a non specific way and told the customs agents 'oh some shirts, books and stuff' when asked why there was $100 in cost on the card.... Allegedly. For further discussion regarding said unknown person, talk to my lawyer, Guido. that is all.:smokey:
  13. thanks for the pics and the info Guzo! It was an interesting read. I have a pair that were sold to me as 'spawning pair' but have yet to have a succesful spawn from. They've laid eggs multiple times but no success as yet. First two times fungused off, last time vanished over night before I could see if they were fertile. I stupidly left a couple of BN plecos in the tank that night, and not sure now if they, or the severums Would love to add some shrimp to clean the fungus, but I am nearly certain mom and dad severum would be going 'oh. look. someone brought us the shrimp platter from Red Lobster!' haha! Hoping that I am able to catch the next spawn of mine. Dan
  14. These were eggs that I bought from a fellow in Montreal, who had them show up in a package of non annuals he had bought from someone in Eastern Europe These are a SA annual. I hatched them as soon as I got them (I am impatient! haha) and got 4 fry. I have been concerned all along that I got 4 males, but I tihnk now it is actually 3 males and 1 female! I am very excited about that. They are roughly 5 weeks old in these pictures. Big Papa Hoping this is mama. You want haz my picture? oh noes. bad picture of 2 males together Another bad picture, note that the out of focus, blurred fish on the right is a week old Xenotoca eiseni. They come out big, and get bigger! haha!
  15. nm. She dropped 10 more today while I was at work. Never seen a livebearer do that before. Mind you, she was in a trap and a female betta is in the tank. That betta was taking runs at the fry when I showed up! haha! she kept ramming her face in to the breeder trap plastic! Probably scared the female yesterday trying to get at the 4 fry she had dropped.
  16. It might be, if I took myself seriously. It's all part of the journey. relearning what is forgotten, then learning new, then forgetting that to alzheimers, and learning it all over again! Greatest part about being as old as I am, i wake up to a woman I can't remember meeting, every day! :smokey:
  17. haha! Are you sure I am ready for guppies??? My most succesfull spawns so far since I have gotten back are snails and hydra! I don't know if I am ready for guppies!!!:boxed: :poo:
  18. hehe. Thanks. I actually have more failed spawns right now than successful ones. My Lacustricola Katangae female died and I had only succesfully hatched out about 8 fry. I'll have to catch that one on the next generation. The fry are so cute though with their little blue eyes! My Super Red Severums just failed on their 3rd spawn. The first two fungused over, and this one they ate last night randomly. They hadn't eaten the last two dailed spawns, just let them fungus completely but they did this one the day after they laid it. and it wasn't fungused, I had seen it only a few hours before. My double dark angels laid a bad spawn... My damn betta male needs abuse counselling. I can't put the female with him;. He immediately tries to kill her... My betta picta pair that I bought at Big Als in Edmonton leapt out of a 1 inch crack the first night I brough them home... found them dried up on the floor in the morning. More fail than sucess so far, but I am getting my breeding chops back... a bit! haha! Probably the first thing to remember is only talk about the sucessful ones, not the fail! :smokey:
  19. It never rains, it only pours! So my skiffia lermae that I got at the ACE auction dropped her fry today. There were only four though. What is a typical spawn for them? I have been doing some reading and it seems that there are very small spawns from them. I am considering asking the CAS BAP coordinator for an exception to the 10 fry rule, but only if I get confirmation that this small of a spawn is not unusual. For anyone that has spawned them, what has your experience been with this? Thanks Dan
  20. Thanks Jay. I think this is her first spawn, so not surprised that it might be on the low end. I can't imagine her carrying 40 of them the size they came out , or even 25! She would have had them coming out her ears! haha! I gave them a little bit of white worms this morning. was fun watching them stalk and attack the worms!
  21. Dunno if they are difficult or not but they sure are pretty! They look a lot like Julis. Closely related? How are the fry doing?
  22. Looks to be about 12 or so. Is that a normal spawn for them? She looked big enough to explode before she dropped them. They are huge too! haha!
