  1. To start was 1M and 1F with other male trying to tempt other 2 F. After 30min no success, joined other male courting gravid female. Males tend to lose track of female a lot and end up chasing each other till they find her again. Other 2 females not interested, 1 doesn't look chunky enough, and just forage around tank. Gravid female seeming to prefer original male over 2nd late comer. Spawning lasted approximately 1-2 hours with 30 eggs deposited on front glass, no others found around tank. They took a break for 2 hours, second female followed by 2 males deposited 70 eggs again on front glass no others found in tank. First 30 were removed from tank to breeder box with 2 drops methyl blue after 1 hour no activity. Last 70 eggs were removed and added to breeder box.
  2. So around 1:30 today noticed my greenlasers out and about. Usually they hide so stepped toward the tank and stopped dead in my tracks, there were eggs on the front glass pane in little clumps of 3-5 and sure enough my chunky momma green came over followed by a male popped 3 more onto the glass. So I documented the spawn to share, but think I may need a new test kit as the readings seem a bit odd. Thinking my trigger might have been that I cleaned both filters (bad me) yesterday. Here's hoping I can raise them and do it again. Approx 1:30 pm Sept 25/14 PH 6.5 - 7 Nitrate 110 Nitrite 0.8 Ammonia 0 Temp 77F / 25C 3F 2M (approximately 2.5 years old) Glass front 1F 2M spawning not group Tankmates Aphysemion Christyi, Apistogramma Borelli 30 G tank, 50G eheim elite hob, 50G sponge filter Moderately planted (swords & crypts), broken Terra cotta pots, driftwood with some moss attached looselyloosely Food- hikari 8 veggie flake, NLS community flake (mixed and fed daily), frozen bloodworms (1/week)
  3. Lol dear lord a toddler fish, your a brave man lol. Maybe attaching it to a slate tile?
  4. Will anything be on the cave? If not I found a neat idea that you could modify while looking at diy caves for axolotls. This might work for you. http://www.caudata.org/forum/f46-beginner-newt-salamander-axolotl-help-topics/f48-axolotls-ambystoma-mexicanum/f59-axolotl-tank-set-ups-filters-substrate/85464-do-yourself-homemade-hides.html
  5. Water lettuce might work if you corral them with some fishing line always found they grow well crowded. Roots are feathery looking and longest I've seen was 4".
  6. Thanks zoo, might take you up on that. Just composing my todo list for this tank, hoping by auction time I have it set up the way I want. Luckily my down the street neighbor is redoing his yard taking out his rock garden so I can get the stones for free. Tested some with vinegar and looking like they are usable
  7. Thank you Jason for the links as I currently only have access on my phone saved me hours of eyestrain. I love the look of the pic you posted, I think Im going to set up something similar with 6 multis, 6 Juli transcripts, a BN, a lucipinnis, and not sure just yet on the top dwellers. Going to take a bit to do the set up so have some time plus thinking to move my tanks to different locations in the house. Thanks everyone for help!
  8. Hmmm if I did the rock/rubble wall as suggested, would it be doable do you believe to say have N. Brevis on one side and the N. Multis on the other? Might have to stick with just one top swimmer but don't think is have any space for the synos on the bottom if I did. Definately have to invest in java fern and Anubias, and look for more branch like driftwood. So if I looked at say 4-6 juvies of leleupi, 6 each of the brevis and multis, and say a pair of BN plecos, how much filtration should I have? Tank currently has an AC110 hob, but could easily add say 2-80G sponges, would this be enough for there needs in addition to 25-50% WC every week?
  9. With the brevis, I couldn't find if they did multi-generational tolerance like the multis. Does your group do this Jason? That intrigued me as with all the aggression I had read about, the family fry rearing was somewhat neat. For the lelepi and Julia , how many would you recommend for a tank this size? Should keep mixed sexes or say just males? Again don't mind fry as long as they're fairly easy to rehome or don't over run the tank. It was also suggested in quite a few pages about adding salt to the tank to prevent bloating in Africans, is this needed or just precautionary? Like the Syno idea as they look adorable plus would help keep fry numbers down I'm sure.
  10. So I have a tank, it is cube style (dimensions are 36.25L x 24.75H x 18.25W inches). Now the hubby has expressed interest in fish that are non community ie. Cory free (shudders), non live bearer, bright, colorful and somewhat aggressive. Definitely not my expertise, and in interest of trying to pique his interest, reached a tentative agreement along those lines. After researching cichlids, Lake Tang's seem to be popular, fairly hardy and colorful. I have recently come across a lot of micro macro tanks and am wondering if this would be doable for Tang's, as during my research came across a cute shell dweller called Neolamprologus Multifasciatus, small fish big personality love it. But as I have no experience with Africans need some advice. What would work well with a colony of these on the bottom that are colorful but don't get to big, won't terrorize the multis, but will do a bit of fry control on the multis and their own fry? A lot to ask I know but the internet can get confusing. TIA
  11. Were any of the guppys/platys looking like they swallowed a small marble? Very round ball like stomach? Have you noticed any dead or alive with almost like a sliver protruding from their anus, very tiny and thin?
  12. Just moved around 20 from the breeder box to a 10G with my cull cherry shrimp. These hatched from the eggs my brown colored bristle male had kicked (first spawn). Looks like he caught the albino female (thanks Jason) as 2 are albinos from the 20+. Just thought I'd share as they are now big enough for pics (lil bigger than full grown female cherry shrimp). Sorry for the bad pics but bulbs are dim and it's a cell phone.
  13. Sometimes with brown sand and higher lights can cause them to spook easier as they do like shady areas. But with low traffic again will spook easier around movement. My tanks in my livingroom dining area have corys but they are way more social where the ones in my office fish room freak every time I'm in the room because they aren't used to it. I've mixed some black sand with the lighter stuff and has calmed them some and added some floating plants to dim the lighting.
  14. A couple other factors to think about: 1) color of substrate 2) light intensity 3) tank area high/med/low/no traffic
  15. I like the Rena Smart heaters, but think the biggest is 300 watt and haven't found any in a long time
  16. Just my opinion but might be a trifle heavy on the bottom dwellers even for a 90G with the clown loaches. I'd leave them out and go for a large school of corys and a few more rams. Not aggression issues but just plain size might be an issue. With the Corys hitting around 3", the rams around the same having I'm assuming at least 3- 16" fish roaming around might be stressful. If it was my tank I'd go with around 15 Corys, 8 GBRs and 6 of the rainbows
  17. I'd check with Rainbow Ric or Geleen as they are the rainbow gurus. But I have kept Threadfins, Gertrudae and Skull creeks with GBR'S without issue in a 75G tank
  18. I have the red (ornatus) and the blue (semoni) 2 of each in a 60G. They both like algae green and brown. They like a bit of current and love perching on driftwood precariously, a bit shy but very docile. I don't find them to be picky eaters and picked them up for around $8-10 each at aquarium central in Edmonton.
  19. Yup, yours and mine both. Sold off a bunch to lighten up my stocking and the gymnos and BN's decided to spawn. Also found some A. Christyi fry in tank. Must be all the hot steamy weather brown chicken brown cow.
  20. Hit and miss on those tetras, some will do great others will chew his tail to pieces. White cloud minnows is a possibility, the gold color firm is bright and flashy,
  21. You could do a sorority tank of female bettas, there's a few collectors in Calgary who have nice ones. or instead of the sorority, add the male betta last after some corys, a twig catfish, and some small schoolers like pencilfish or neon daisy rice fish or threadfin rainbows. Lots of movement and colors.
  22. I know right they're being so unreasonable, which is why I'm switching the pinata to a fish from a heart lol
  23. Lol one of these days I shall make to Calgary and check out all these stores you post about, and then watch my Hubby's eyes pop out after we bring everything in lol, was supposed to this weekend for wedding dresses but silly me mentioned all the great stores I've read about and hubby and Maid of honor nixed the idea 😁
  24. Oh what Cory's were you thinking? Corydoras oiapoquensis or Sterbai?
  25. Are you looking for a Cory that will be sociable ie out and about more for viewing? If so I'd swap the pygmy's for habrosus, they are only a little bigger but I've found them to be way less shy than pygmy's. Try for a group of 8-10 as they prefer a bigger school than their larger cousins
