  1. Not sure about Edmonton but Calgary store is every boxing day.
  2. That is why its so strange it doesn't leak when running only when power is off and valve open other 405 is fine might be time for a replacement.
  3. Thanks for the idea I would sooner burn out a motor than dump 15 gallons or more on the carpet again.I do run two 405's on my 75g but only one the newest is acting up, might be time to look at some new ( different ) canisters .
  4. What a Monday arrived home from work to the sound of a water fall, checked the 75 gallon to see water level was down approx. 4" and a nice big wet spot on the carpet. While looking around I could see clocks were all flashing so I must have had a power interruption. With some checking I discovered the Fluval 405 leaks when power is turned off and aqua-stop valve is open has anybody else experienced this or is this something new,I've had minor leaks after maintenance but never like this. Any remedies I don't have power failures very often but I can't have this happen every time.
  5. It use to come in chrome & gold and was called parabolic louvers in the lighting industry it is designed to direct light straight down another bonus.
  6. If your looking to QT fish before adding to your main tank then you could fishless cycle both tanks at the same time.As for the bacteria after fishless cycle it is very resilient and can quickly multiply when bio load increases but it is always best to stock slowly and use your test kit to keep water parameters in check.
  7. I always found making a stand much easier than trying to reinforce a desk or cabinet.A few 2x4s some 3/4" plywood and some cabinet doors from home depot.I found lots of plans and ideas on this site and others.
  8. I use canister filters on my main tanks so I keep a sponge for my QT tank Aqua clear in one of the canisters media trays always ready for quick set ups. Or you can just transfer media from a cycled tank squeezing out a dirty sponge works too.
  9. I have seen these before on my driftwood & black pre-filters on my intakes but not as many as your pics show. I was wondering wouldn't they make a tasty snack for some of your Tetras or smaller fish?
  10. I have six Kuhli loaches that come out to eat during feeding I don't do anything special for them, they are very good scavengers and do most of their business at night.Judging by how fat they are they could probably stand to go on a diet.
  11. Google whirling disease(did show a rummynose tetra acting a lot like your rainbow) I know it is becoming an issue for cold water fish like trout, but I don't think the parasite that causes it can survive in tropical temperatures.
  12. yep aqua clear 20 cheap, effective and durable.
  13. It seems to be a popular mutation I have seen Mollies Platies Rams and now Rainbows so some body must be buying them.I just find it strange as most hobbyists cull fish like this when they show up during breeding.I can't imagine these fish are very healthy or survive very long.
  14. I spotted this label at a LFS today and had to stop and take a look, sure enough I spotted what had to be the saddest looking group of Rainbows that I have ever seen. They were twisted and terribly deformed with the worst coloring. Why would anybody do this to just a beautiful fish species?
  15. Usually when I hear clerks giving bad advise I bite my tongue, but after hearing a clerk recommend a crayfish for a customer who was going to put it in his young daughters gold fish tank,I had to say something. It would have been a hard lesson for someone so young.
  16. Are you using the test strips or liquid test kit because test strips are VERY unreliable as a check my test on tap water came out to zero.
  17. I know this is an old post but after changing all the o-rings, clasps and aqua stop valve with no luck stopping my leak.I banged my head for several hours trying to sort it out even took motor housing apart looking for cracks with no luck, I sat back with a cold Kokanee and pondered my next move I noticed canister that holds the media trays looked warped at the top so I put on about three wraps of plumbers teflon tape in the grove that holds the main o-ring slid o-ring over top reassembled canister and no leak running dry for about a hour fingers crossed and time for another cold one.
  18. Under the right conditions hornwort can grow like a weed and take over a small tank in a couple of weeks.Great plant when all goes well.
  19. Thanks FCG I like your idea of the KISS method but just wasn't working so I have begun tinkering with some of the parameters. I agree with the idea of others out competing for nutrients but not sure on the lights, stems are planted in a rather bare section that I was hoping to fill in with something different than the rest of the plants. You mentioned about changing the bulbs I'm curious. On another note the Apons from Plant Guy are growing like crazy and have begun flowering this species is fast becoming one of my favorites.
  20. Makes scents time to reread dosing calculator and hit the tank with more ferts.WC tomorrow so perfect time to reset and grow some stems. Thanks everybody much appreciated
  21. Remember to do regular maintenance on canister filters replace seals before they fail LOL, and have spare parts on hand for emergencies.Stepping in a puddle at feeding time is not a good way to start your day.
  22. Changing to sand might be something in the future I do like it in some of my non planted tanks. As for damaging plants pushing it into the gravel interesting idea worth a try thanks.
  23. No cats here but I do have to deal with a 100lbs.Rotti cross who gets very jealous when I spend to much time on the tanks. He will steal scrapers, nets, filter media even 5 gallon pails or bark at me when he thinks enough is enough.
  24. I do dose the the tank with NPK & trace, root tabs are used under the root feeders,I try to keep N at around 20ppm.When I do WC I use a Python and adjust water temp.to match tank approx.78F
  25. 2 x 54 Watt according to pinned PAR chart I should be at a high light level As for excel/mericide dosing I follow directions for the excel half that when using mericide.I started out with half doses and work my way up to avoid melting the vals they are happily sending out runners and taking over one corner of my tank.
