  1. I also have had the same experience as Jason. I do 50% + water changes and have never had any issues during any season. I do smell that the tap water is a little more chloriney but don't notice any difference in my tanks. I use a python and dose for the full size of the tank, not sure if that makes a difference.
  2. I don't think a milk jug would work as the lid isn't tight enough. I used to use 4l cranberry juice jugs I wouldn't worry about them blowing up, I did it for years and never had any issues. Its also not like a regular co2 unit where you need a bubble counter or to really regulate it. Just let it bubble as much as it does into the tank. You'll have issues with trying to get enough co2 not with having too much. I ran 2l pop bottles on my smaller tanks(20g ish) and I did 4l jugs on my 56g. I ran the tubing into a small elite mini filter or before that into the intake of my HOB or powerhead. For the 4l jugs I did 3-4 cups sugar, fill with warm water to about 4" from the top and put about 1/2 tsp yeast. Lasted about 3 weeks with good bubble output. Never added baking soda
  3. Totally photoshopped. Thats a Otopharynx Lithobates A lovely google image search finda the same pic, uneditted, on this site http://www.cichlidenkwekers.nl/otopharynx-lithobates/
  4. Score! So the mailman delivered my Eheim replacement parts today and they sent a whole new lid/motor! I thought they'd just be sending the primer pump seal piece inside the lid but its a completely new motor. Sweet, I guess it pays to contact the companies
  5. We don't do mini auctions but we do have some pretty sweet raffle prizes at the meetings.
  6. Today I learned do not forget you had put hand cream on 30mins before deciding to change the water in one of your tanks :boxed:
  7. Yep, its going to be the big CAOAC convention weekend/auction on May 18-19th! http://www.edmontonfish.com/
  8. Nope thats a salt water shrimp.
  9. You can find the membership form on the ACE website http://www.edmontonfish.com/membership/ As for my shrimp I haven't separated them as they are Fire reds but some of them also look PFR grade. I guess I shouldn't have said Sakura as they are actually fire reds with some showing PFR coloring too. I do remove any that are sakura grade to keep the red solid. Grading of cherry shrimp is kind of annoying because basically the fire red and PFR are so close. They shouldn't have different names more of a ABC system like Crystal shrimp. Basically I sell them as "fire reds". Also Candy striped pistol shrimp are salt water so I have no idea where you'd get those.
  10. I have Orange shrimp and Red fire/Sakura/painted fire(basically a super red cherry). I used to breed yellows, cherries, and greens. Tried CRS/CBS but didn't have any luck with them. There are a few people breeding shrimp in Edmonton. Just got to know who to ask Try joining the aquarium club.
  11. A planted community might not be the best for a regular crayfish. He will eat whatever he can get a hold of, fish and plants. I have heard that the orange mexican crayfish(also called CPO) is ok in a community tank. They are small and shouldn't eat plants and can't catch most fish. I just saw a tank of them at Aquarium Central and they looked pretty cute. Bright neon orange
  12. I love crayfish! They make a fun tank. They are usually available at most stores, at least here in Edmonton. I've seen white ones, red ones, blue ones, zebra ones, those little mexican orange ones(more community tank friendly), the self cloning ones etc. Just be cautious of adding other fish and plants. Don't put anything in with them you aren't willing to get eaten. I kept my blue crayfish with danios and other quick top dwelling fish but eventually they'd go "missing". Some are better hunters then others. Same with plants. He'd shred and chop them into tiny pieces, even tried chewing up my plastic plants. I'd throw my plant clippings in there as it was fun to watch him "edward scissorhands" them into tiny pieces. Also cover EVERY hole, even the filter outflow as they will climb out. I rigged up some coroplast to cover my HOB filter outflow as my guy climbed out and decided to go for a walk.
  13. I QT all my fish I get from stores, unknown people or auctions in a separate 10-20g for 3-4 weeks. I've been burned by sick fish killing off my tanks so its worth it. I usually don't medicate unless they look sick. If they do get sick the QT extends for another 3 weeks after they are better. I feed all new fish NLS Thera A. Some might think its a bit paranoid to QT that long but I find it easier then dealing with sick fish in a main tank. As for dealing with bagged fish. I just scoop and dump. I figure there could be things(contaminants, chemicals) on the outside of the bag so I don't float it. Plus floating for 5-10mins isn't really enough time for the temp inside the bag to change. There was also an old thread where RD talked about why it isn't good to add water to the bag. Here http://AlbertaAquatica.com/index.php?showtopic=32913&p=2238375 Never had a problem with the scoop and dump method, especially when just bringing them home from a store.
  14. So I emailed them to check on shipping costs and its 55$ for over night ground or 35$ for 2 day. The box can hold 100 shrimp of 5 different kinds. They also said they are getting more shrimp in next week
  15. Finally heard back from Eheim support. They are going to send me a new pump primer seal as that could be where its leaking from since the water is filling up the lid. I guess we'll have to see if that fixes it.
  16. No I haven't. Do you know how much their shipping is?
  17. If you are taking the fish and shrimp out make sure to keep feeding the bacteria in the 10g with ammonia. Bacteria won't grow back without food.
  18. And this is why child proof caps were invented. Do lots of water changes and watch your levels. Hopefully it doesn't kill off everything. How big of a tank is it?
  19. I ordered a few plants off aquabid, mostly mosses and crypts. I think the seller was Aquamagic They were super cheap but took 3 weeks to ship since it was coming from Asia. I'm not sure how some of the other plants would hold up. The crypts were shipped as just the roots so I didn't really have to worry about them dying in transit and the mosses were fine. Crypts usually melt from travelling so no leaves is better for shipping anyways and I had new leaves in about a week. I've heard good things about The Plant Guy but haven't ordered from him personally.
  20. Just a reminder that its tonight!
  21. I have never had any issues with rabbit snails eating my plants. I have kept the orange rabbit snails, white spotted and chocolates. Never had any touch the plants.
  22. No, So far I haven't had any issues with the hose connector. It unclips fine and has always clipped back in fine too. I googled a little bit and it looks like the 2071/73/75 do have some leaking issues. I saw a couple posts talking about unscrewing the lid and cleaning the pump and that that helped. Not sure if I have a screw driver that will work with the weird screws tho. I might try contacting Eheim as it seems leaking in the lid is a known problem and lots of the posts said Eheim sent replacement parts. I"ll keep trying to fix it. At least my tank has a new filter on it so I'm not as worried about my fish but I can't say the same for the floor. Hopefully the hardwood isn't ruined under my stand
  23. Well I set the tank up with a AC70 filter for the time being. I looked everything over with a flashlight and didn't see any cracks and the rings all look ok. One thing I did notice was there is a little floaty impeller looking thing thats in the lid(in the out hose hole) that was pretty crusty. I removed it with tweezers and have it soaking to clean it up. Not sure what it does but at least it will be clean now.
