  1. DO NOT PUT SALT INTO THE TANK ! MPE/O. Salt kills discus. Those Tefe Green's came in last year. and > Unless the "keeper" was a dedicated Discus person, Which I doublt ; they are not in good condition. They were not clean when imported. The "stool" will tell you the internal condition of the discus. Water parametrs are very important. Low ph, LOW kh/gh; High temperature. My best advice is to go to DPH. nl . Go to the articles page and look under diseases / medication. READ ! Discus are not for the novice ! They require healthy environments. Once fully cleaned / acclimatized; they are very hardy cichlids. Metro is the medication of internal choice. However, you have to use the med correctly; no half efforts.. Tens days will clear them out. Pleaes read the article on dph. Metro may be difficult to locate; go to a vet and present a print-out of the proeedure. [ You may have to type it out]; Metro is a common medicine used to treat Mammels [ sheep, etc.] However, it is only available from an understanding vet. BECAUSE it can also be used to harm humans. Legalites !!! pH 6.8; KH 45 - 50 ppm; GH 60 ppm; Temp 88'F. Lots of aireation and no Nitrates over 5 - 10 ppm. NH3 / NO2 ZERO!!! THE DISCUS CAN BOUNCE BACK. SPEND THE TIME TO TAKE OF THEM. They are very beautiful fish. Smokey
  2. How is the plumbing going ? Any news to report ?? Smokey H#$l I laugh just when I think about Saskibutt. :P :smokey:

    Hello All

Welcome to AlbertaAquatica, Richard. I'm sure you will fit "right in". There are many "Greenthumb" members on-board, with plenty of expertice. Smokey
  7. Beermaster: In most cases, you can use the tank after 48 hours. The silicone has "cured/solidified"! I have had tanks "oxide" for months on end. The tanks were just sitting in a room. The odour is not toxic to the fish. Just off-gassing! Depending on which Brand of silicone you have used. and which product of each manfufacture. e.g DOW CORNING's 732 as oppossed to GE SILICONES CONSTRUCTION 1200 SERIES SEALANT. HOWEVER - make sure the silicone has completely cured. Pressing on the "NEW" siicone will tell you if it has solidified. Rarely, a batch of silicone will go bad; BUT NOT UNHEARD OFF. All have a limited usefull lifespan. ALWAYS CHECK THE DATE ON EACH CONTAINER!! IF - the silicone has completely cured: carbon will removed any "nose ordor". Smokey
  8. Welcome to AlbertaAquatica, Ryan. 14 years of "Wet Thumbs" - Expierence; Congradulatiions ! Smokey
  9. Rudy; it has been years since I owned Polleni's ( Edmonton years). They are an incrediable species. I did find they grew slower than an oscar and were less aggressive than an oscar, for their given age. Osacar, tigers ... are very [seem to be ] more aggressive, when it comes to feeding. Today, it may be different. Oscars - cheap / Polleni's expensive! Mind you, I was able to acquire some very pure species. Smokey The tank was a 6 footer. 230 gallon. Two 1800 g/h pumps. w/150 g. sump.
  10. Loricariidae :: Ancistrinae sp. (L239) / Scientific Name Ancistrinae sp. (L239) Common Name Blue Panaque, L239 Notes on ID The pictures here show the range of colour this fish can exhibit. Typically it is dull charcoal black with a tinge of blue. The fish appears to belong to an undescribed genus characterised by the fused dorsal and adipose fins. Habitat Information / Distribution Upper Orinoco, Venezuela References Not in Aqualog as L239, but Aqualog shows this fish labelled as L232. Further Information © 2005 planetcatfish.com.
  11. I agree . However; mixing with an Oscar; same tank. HMMMM, someone is going to lose ... my personal expierence. Be very careful. Two differnet worlds ! Polleni are very beautiful cichlids. and not that common. Smokey
  12. Could you post a pic of the L239 , so the rest of the members can identify . Thanks. Smokey
  13. AHHHHHA ... the trains are trying to swerve around all the "partiers" dancing on the tracks .... LOL.... Thanks for clearing that up ! :smokey: :smokey: Smokey

As you saw today. Tanya happened to stop in today and ended up helping many others, with their question/probelms while I netted fish. [ seems everyone shows up at the same time}. 17. AquaDiva - you are so right. Intimidation can cause one to "hold back", " be quiet". However, once a person has taken the first step [ posting ], the fear goes away quickly. AND, the more a person posts the more confident they become :boxer: All of a sudden the person has become an active member, able to converse, challange and learn with the rest of the best. hey guys

Welcome To Alberta Aquatica, Kyle. I'm sure you'l fit in nicely. YOU'VE GOT THE ADDICTION !! Great pics. What type of camera are you using ? I see you have a couple of eels. [ last pic in your photo bucket. ]. Gotta love them. Smokey
  20. Rodsboys, any luck in locating the South American Bumble Bee cat ? I know they are available from the wholesalers, so any retailer in Ed. should carry them,/ be able to bring some in for you. Unfortunately, they are not a very common catfish for the average hobbiest to "want". I have had 6 of them in the tanks at the shop, for over a month and unless you point them out, you never see them. Most customers usually go "YUCK" or " INTERESTING" ! Smokey
  21. Only if they are micro - chipped; come with a birth cert.; and can only be transported with approvial of the government. Otherwise they are not!! "BIG DIFFERENCE." Smokey
