    fluval 103

103 is pretty underpowered for a 60 gal, I think theyre only rated to 25 or 30
  3. I dont believe you are supposed to clean it before putting it in, Best way to put it in is an empty tank... lay the fluorite down first, then a layer of other gravel on top of it. Put something like a dinner plate or piece of rock on top of the substrate when filling so the water is not directly stirring it up and it wont be quite so cloudy... cloudiness should go away within a couple days Could be wrong, but thats my experience with it
  4. Have never seen/heard of an Ebo-Jager getting stuck on, but have personally seen at least 5 of those terrible Guardian heaters fry a tank.
  5. I have been pondering setting up a salt tank for a grouper/lionfish, been thinkin somewhere in the 90g range. I can't seem to find much in the way of groupers that dont get over a foot... which would be a bit too large for a 90, so my first question is: Are there any grouper species suitable in a 90g for their entire life? I have read that groupers and lionfish can get along just fine, so long as they dont fit into each others big mouths. Is this true? Would this be possible in a 90g? Last question... for now Are there any species of grouper/lion (that will be good in a 90) that wont eat every invert in sight? I would like to get a few types of crabs and shrimp as they are one of the main attractions to saltwater for me. I am not too worried about going with soft corals and most likely going to stay away from anemones altogether. Any input/personal experience would be great, Thanks.
  6. The CT males/females are actually supposed to be $7.99ea, the regular m/f are the $3.99 ones. Probably got one of our newbies baggin em who doesnt know the difference yet
  7. As far as I know, they shouldnt get much bigger than 5-6" from nose to tail, and are quite similar in care to crayfish... will eat just about anything (excellent scavenger/bottom feeder), quite tolerant of water temperature (from near freezing up to about 85F), and extremely hardy They will TRY and catch any fish they can grab, but they are surprisingly clumsy with those claws... I believe they can even stand being overwintered in a pond, as long as they dont freeze solid and there is adequate oxygenation
  8. Plz dont put a beardie in a 35, they need much more room than that, even as babies
  9. 2028 is not quite 18 inches high when all hooked up, 2026 is about 3-4 inches shorter i believe
  10. Killer deal on these at Pisces right now 2026 package (reccomended up to 92Gal): filter, 2L box of substrat pro, 1L box of EHFI Mech and pro intake/output kit for only $249.99 2028 package (reccomended up to 158Gal): Filter, 2x 2L box of Substrat Pro, 1L box of EHFI Mech and pro intake/output kit for only $349.99 Had to pick up a 2028 myself... though I didnt really need it, but at that price I simply couldnt pass it up
  11. We are out of em at Pisces, picked up 3 at Riverfront today, pretty good size too... Also had to grab a few of the Red Chromides to spice up my brackish tank
  12. Any stores in Cowtown have some of these guys in stock, i could sure use a few
  13. Oh how right you are... just in time too We just got some small F1 Channa Bleheri (Rainbow Snakehead) in at Pisces today, half have already been sold to staff (including myself) They are about 2-3" long and $29.99 each There were still 6 when I left at 5:30
  14. I have been wintering my Koi outside for the last 10 years with absolutely no problems in only a 2 foot deep pond. I just run a de-icer on a thermostat and keep the pump running to keep the circulation up and have never had a problem with it freezing too much.
  15. I would agree with the Ebo Jager, dont think I will ever buy another brand of heater 1 thing... stay away from the Guardian (Metal) heaters... supposed to be good and unbreakable, tube never breaks... but they LOVE to cook fish
  16. Lol, great quote... my feeders are the only thing that gets flake in my house

  18. Many of the Damsel family make great starter fish, cheap and pretty hardy. Only problem with damsels is a lot of them can get quite territorial/nasty with your new fish. Not 100% sure if it is true, but someone told me that there are a couple species of clownfish that are hardy enough for cycling. If all else fails you could always just go with the fishless cycle method (Fishless Cycling Article)
  19. lol, so true, I have 2 of them in my 170g and all they do is sit at the top beside my filter intake all day, only time they ever even move is if I throw some crickets in there
  20. Yeah, I have heard that before as well, but as of yet... all my bichirs seem to entirely ignore the little ray, which I guess is a good thing. I make sure to keep my bichirs really well (possibly over) fed so I havent had a single problem with them nipping at any of their other tankmates yet. At the slightest sign of agression the bichirs will be relocated to a 180 gal, but I am hopeful that there wont be any troubles
  21. The time has finally come, and I am going to be getting a pair of teacup rays (which I am 90% sure are Laticeps). The tank they are going in already has... 2 Clown Loaches 1 Pictus Cat 2 Marble Bichirs 2 Ornate Bichirs 4 Senegal Bichirs 2 African Butterfly Fish 1 Bristlenose Plelco (who is moving before they get in there) 2 Flying Fox Maybe 1 Flower shrimp (I will move it if its still in there and I can find it) I will be keeping a VERY close eye on how they do with the bichirs, the slightest sign of agression from the bichirs and they get to go in a different tank Tank dimensions are 60" wide, 22" tall and 30" front to back, sparsely decorated with just a couple rocks and plants with a sand bottom (on a side note, is there ANYWHERE in Cow Town to get good sand? not the crappy dust filled playsand that you have to wash for hours on end to get an acceptable amount of clarity) I do know that the rays like soft, acidic water which I dont think will be a problem for the current inhabitants What are the best products/tricks to get our hard, alkaline water ready for them? I am sure I will think of more questions
  22. No pics, probably never will be... I don't quite see the worth of me buying a digital camera... but if you do want to see them, Riverfront has a bunch of them right now... or did about 3 days ago, right in front of their chameleons and beardies
  23. Yeah, I was going to take those 2 little Ceylons home with me one day after work, but I just didnt have the room at the time. I am kind of leaning away from the Figure 8's and the Green Spotted, guess I'm just a sucker for something other than the most common... as the rest of my fish collection would prove I was planning on heading to Oceans and Franco's tomorrow already, Oceans just to check it out (never been there) and Franco's for their decent selection of puffers. Another question... what would be a good tankmate or tankmates for a pair of Ceylon or similarly sized and tempered puffers? Archer? Bumblebee Goby? Scats and Mono's get a bit too big for a 54
  24. I am going to be setting up a 54g brackish tank for puffers at some point this week, and have a couple quick questions... Should I use run of the mill Aquarium Salt or something like Instant Ocean that is designed for marine setups? What shop has a good selection of puffers in Calgary at the moment?
  25. Thanks for the advice, and the warning... I will be sure to keep an eye on them when I get them, I will make sure to keep a tank ready if they need to be seperated
