  1. Val, If you want to get rid of some, let me know. Thanks, Leon
  2. $25 US from Big Als, but $54.99 CAD here. Nice meter, but twice the price? WTF? There is a serious problem with Canadian distributors.
  3. Just an after thought. I am thinking of adding some eggcrate from the first over/under baffle to the top of the tank. Just to keep any chaeto etc. in the fuge area. Any thoughts from the pros? Leon
  4. The guys name is Neil. He has an add on Kijiji. I paid $225. Pm me if you want his number.
  5. I just picked up my new 50 gal sump. Actually it should hold 35 gal max. I had it built by a local guy on the southside of Edmonton. Here's a few pics.
  6. Not to hijack the thread, but where do you get 10 gal pails with screw on lids?
  7. JFYI. I use T5 HO 36" x4 in my canopy of my 150 gal. You can buy them at All Seasons Garden centre with bulbs for $40/each. A lot less power usage for really good light.
  8. Jerry, I joined Canreef this morning. Are you talking about the dry rock from Eco-reefer or the EcoLiveRock site?
  9. Thanks for the info Jerry. I will have to check out Canreef for more details. I have looked at the SWC 160 skimmer at BigAls. The reviews look good and a lot of "bang for the buck" factor. Anyone on here using these?
  10. Definitely looking at EcoLiveRock as well. What a great idea. It looks like they have a distibutor in B.C.
  11. I know I haven't been on here a lot lately. All the Africans are doing well, and I was too busy developing the basement. Now that it is almost finished, I have decided to give saltwater a try. I bought a 120 Perfecto with a corner overflow. I will be custom building the stand and canopy. I also purchased the 4 lamp T5HO from AquaticLife. I hope to find a good tank for the sump. Something with a 36"x18" footprint. Now I need suggestions on: -Skimmer brand and size -Return pump brand and size -All Live rock vs. some live and some base rock -Sump layout. I have some idease from the net, but it's cool to see other ideas. That's all for know. Future questions on stocking and compatibility to follow. Thanks, Leon
  12. I am running three 1200's for undergravel jets and I have had one impeller fail. This was after about three years in service. I do agree that they are not very strong. And to buy a new impeller is not cheap. I usually wait for the Boxing Day sales, and pick up a couple new units for close to the same price.
  13. I run an FX5 on my 150gal malawi tank. No problems keeping up to an overstocked tank. I also have under-gravel-jets, so that might make a difference.
  14. Make it at least 1" bigger in width and length of the tank. It will give you room to put trim around the edges.
  15. Ok...........now you have made an assumption that is not correct. Yes skyscrapers are held together with bolts. But they are not stood on top of bolts. I am a structural steel detailer. So I work with bolt capacities all the time. Bolts have a capacity rated in shear strength and tensile strength. Shear is the resistance 90° to the bolt or across the diameter. The loading capacity changes with whether or not the threads are included or intercepted in the grip of the bolt. Tensile is the resistance to pull along the length of the bolt or stretch. A bolts tensile strength is a bit higher than its shear strength. And then there are slip-critical connections where the clamping action of the bolts causes enough friction between the connected parts that they hold together. You mentioned that there are 1" thick nuts on the inside of the endcap. Are these fully welded or tacked to the plate? This weld is in tension. If they are indeed fully welded around each nut, you will have about 3/4" worth of thread (in the nut) to take the 833 lbs of load. The nut would be better place on the outside, so that it comes up against the endcap in bearing. Taking that all things are welded properly and you have at least 3/4" of thread usage, you will be ok. I will not say anything further. Leon
  16. Dustin, I think you are missing the point. We are all aquarists with different ideas on how to build something or make things work with what we have. One of your other posts is about how expensive this hobby is. It would be an utter shame if you were to build this tank and have a $2 bolt be the demise of some wonderful inhabitants. Just being cautious. Take this advice however you like, and go what you think is best. Leon
  17. Just a quick calculation. You will probably be up in the area of 5000 lbs. That's 833 lbs. per cap screw. How thick is the plate that you have threaded? What is the diameter of the cap screw? You can double the capacity by using a locking nut below the plate. Definitely needs to be looked at.
  18. Try PJ's at Londonderry. They usually have a lot of AquaClear parts.
  19. That's interesting. In my 55 gal breeding tank of my F1 yellows, if they spit in the tank, nothing survives. And they are the only inhabitants except for a really lazy common pleco.
  20. Oops, I think you may be right. The main plant is the address you gave. Just South of the Yellowhead at 17St and then East on the service road. Can't miss it. Last time I bought a bag, it was 40kg for $14. I am sure there is a distributor in Calgary as well. Leon
  21. You can get it at: Sil Industrial Minerals 7331-18 Street Edmonton AB, T6P1P9 Phone #: 780-478-7171 Fax #: 780-425-8882 And here is a pic.
  22. Sil-9 is awesome. Just give it a good rinse as there does seem to be a bit of dust. Leon
  23. My F2's have black in the dorsal right from time of spitting. I agree with RD that good quality Labs are beautiful. If you are getting Labs from Harold, you won't be disappointed. Leon
  24. Congrats Jerry  I hope they all hatch for ya. Keep us posted. Leon
