  1. Is that S. fryeri? Mine was never that red.
  2. On my 180 gallon tank I use black felt with velcro. I have painted a couple of smaller tanks blue, but with a tank so big I did not want something so permanent.
  3. Just barely see Dec. 2 post under Breeding.
  4. Probably - Im just enjoying the moment right now, but maybe when they get to an inch, I will sell the fry. Likley I will advertise it on this forum when the time comes.
  5. Oh, Oh time for a water change!!
  6. Good going. How big are the fry and the parents?
  7. I got a great birthday present one day late, December 1st, courtesy of my fish. My Frontosa mpimbwes have not done much since I bought them a year and a half ago. They grew slowly and got along but didn’t seem to interact much with each other or show much activity. Normally I’d just feed them and watch them a little when the TV was on as they have been in that room since late spring. Last night when I looked at them, it seemed that one fish had a puffier jaw, but then those fish are large and I wasn’t sure if she was holding eggs. It looked kind of dark in her mouth and when I fed my fish again she did not eat. I didn’t even know which fish were the females or how many females I have. Two fish are large and more purple and have humpy heads, so I assumed they were males. Since she wasn’t eating, I thought she was very likely holding something so I caught the fish and stripped her, using the shaft of a small screwdriver. I didn’t know how long she was holding and was very worried that I would get eggs. I was very happy to find ten fry, all well developed with no egg sacs at all. I have placed them in a 20 gallon tank by themselves. The fry are quite big – as large as other African Cichlid fry I have had that were 6 weeks old. Here is a picture of some fry. And a picture of daddy:
  8. Just sharing a picture of one of my mpimbwes. I bought him from someone 18 months ago on this site at about 5-6 inches in size. He is now approaching 12 inches. Fed on New Life Spectrum and the odd frozen shrimp. Taken with the Nikon D50 I bought in the summer - mostly I use it for landscapes.
  9. For U.S. gallons it is always length x width x height divided by 231. Don't know why but we always use U.S. gallons (maybe 'cause we use litres more here when buying gas and milk, and have given up on British gallons).
  10. They do it because my wife says " Too many tanks all over the place! Too many hoses and water changes ." We have a 90 gallon in the living room, the 180 in the basement TV room, and three others in the "fish room." The fish room also houses our computer and desk.
  11. Thanks for the vote of confidence. I will have fry ready to sell again in about a week.
  12. Also it may help us out if you tell us if you want to breed them and do you want to have more than one species? If breeding, I'd say only one species in a tank that small.
  13. Well, my wife started off with a baby in '78, then another in '79, and then,.. Oh, you mean fish?! We started with the Convicts and Jack Dempseys and then got busy with the other breeding (see above) for a few years and shut down our tanks. Four years ago our "fry" started leaving home so we (I) started up with fish again and have raised Dolphins and Yellow Labs, and Electric Blue and S fryeri but are still waiting impatiently on the Frontosas
  14. I bought an AC70 (former AC300) two months ago at Gold. I think it was around $38. Seems to be close to double other places.
  15. Quote Just a thought. On my 135 and my 108 (both built by Mitch) I was able to just trim the plastic around the Eurobracing and it was enough to get ac 500s to fit. AC 300s however you will have an issue. My tank has the glass lip sticking out from the plastic - you'd have to grind/cut the glass before reaching the plastic.
  16. Is there any danger in grinding the glass lip? (Danger to integrity of tank)
  17. I just signed this book out from the local library. Great images and ideas. Most of which no one can afford but it's nice to dream. Below is link to Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Inspired-Aquarium-In...TF8&s=books
  18. I had the same thing happen to me. I had asked for three females, one male. About six months later, I found I had a second male - took him back and exchanged for another female.
  19. Just curious as to how big your tank is. I had a 180 gallon through Gold Aquarium and encountered the same problem with the thickness of the glass lip. I have cannister filters but I wanted to add an Aquaclear for more water movement. I used a heat gun on the Aquaclear tube to reshape it but now it doesn't seat well in the bottom of the chamber so the flow is reduced by probably 80%. I was wondering if cutting out some of that glass lip is an option (the lip goes around the whole perimeter of the tank). I don't have the three inch constraint that you have behind the tank so perhaps your options are more limited. Maybe I need a powerhead. I see too much debris not getting agitated enough for the cannisters to pick up.
  20. Just set the dial to the temp. you want and check it in a bit with a reliable thermometer. If you want say 80 degrees, set it , for 80 degrees. If the thermometer says it is really 81, just turn it down a degree.
  21. What are some good free hosting sites to use to post images on forums that don't squish everything into 100 x 150 pixels? I have photobucket but they seem to really downgrade the images.
  22. Yeah, great. You gotta love Peyto lake on a clear day. What are some good free hosting sites to use to post images on forums that don't squish everything into 100 x 150 pixels?
  23. So what would you replace it with, if you do not need it? Nothing at all if you so choose but often put in an extra piece of sponge or floss.
