  1. Different coloring too. Burundi are almost black, others have more blue and purple.
  2. In both cases I had 1M 3F. Depends if you want breeders or not.
  3. You mean S fryeri vs C azureus? I've had both, the males are bright blue in both cases. Color-wise maybe a slight edge to S fryeri but they are a bit more aggressive so if in a "community" mix, I'd go with the C azureus (Electric blue 2).
  4. I picked up a 24" silver fixture with bulb last weekend for $35. I'd never seen these before but thought I'd try one at the price. They seem pretty bright. Just wondered who has tried them and their opinion.
  5. You could hatch brine shrimp for a couple of weeks for initial food i f you like.
  6. Yeah, I just came back to the site and it looks fine now so I don't know what was happening.
  7. Why is clock not set for Standard Time? Other than that everything looks great. Appreciate the work!!
  8. I used an Eheim 2217 and an AC500 on my 90 for some time with success but recently switched to two AC500s because I needed the Eheim elsewhere.
  9. I've never used that brand but bought one at big Als on sale over Christmas for a 10 gallon tank. It worked three days then quit so I took it back. They said they were reliable and couldn't believe it quit. They set it up in the store and it worked - for about two minutes - so they gave me another one. Penguin 100 worked for two weeks and now today it is acting up. It quits - I jiggle and wiggle the tube and it works for 30 minutes and then quits. So do I have bad luck or are they a problem? I've only used AClear HOB so far and was trying this brand because of the sale.
  10. I gotr my 180 from Golds last Spring- no tax on tank and I got a metal stand from them for $200.
  11. I run two 250 W E Jagers on my 180 gallon. Three canisters and One AC fikter
  12. I bought a new 180 from Golds for $450 including glass top which means a used one could maybe be had for $200-$250 so I would use that as a price base when you are calculating costs. If you are going to spend close to that for materials, can you justify doing it yourself? Not trying to talk you out of it by any means. Good luck with your venture.
  13. Great advice all around thank you.
  14. My son wants a Betta. Can one really be kept in a globe bowl? Is a 10 gallon tank better? Do they need heater and filtration? Hpw often to do water changes? I only know cichlids.
  15. Mbuna Ron - I run two 250W on my 180. I have 9 Mpimbwe frontosas in there. It has been going for 7 months, come by and see it if you wish - It may give you ideas plus I am looking for ideas still myself so send me a PM
  16. Thanks, chloramine is not a problem with Calgary water.
  17. Many months ago I got some white non-liquid powder crystals (like salt) for removing chlorine from an Alberta Aquatica member. He just puts a capful in a pop bottle of water and uses that as his source - just adding a capful of that bottle when doing partial water changes. I've used this product for months with no ill effects but it is not scientific enough for me. I'd like to know exact weights and volumes to use. I don't even know the exact name of the compound but it does work - I just don't like guessing.
  18. RD wanted to see a picture of Punman's dolphins. This male was from Albert. Of the four females I have, two were from Albert, two not- but I don't know which are which.
  19. This is how I have my 90 gallon set up for the same fish. I would have more rock but this is not so much a show tank but a breeding tank and I have to remove rock to catch holding females every two weeks. It only takes two minutes to remove the rock. Good luck!!
  20. Some even need to be closer to an inch to show black.
  21. I buy pool filter sand in Calgary for $8 for 50 lbs. from a pool place.
  22. Get your tank water level to height in the tank you generally like it. Put your spray bar in about 3/4 inch (2 cm) below that, in horizontal position angled down at 45 degrees. It will be quiet and by time the water evaporates enough for splashing just top it up but by then it should be time for a partial water change anyways because a week or 10 days will have gone by.
  23. It may be safe for the fish, but that is not the point. The treatment facilities are overloaded and we are to reduce consumption. I usually do water changes every 10 days - on the 10th , 20th , 30th. My day to change has come and gone. My fish are well cared for and I'm sure that because of that, they can wait another week if they have to.
  24. Do you want to raise babies? If no, just leave her there. If yes, move her to a small tank by herself and let her spit out the babies in three or four weeks. Option three, would be to leave her there for about 18 days and then strip her. Do a search on stripping a female (things that sound dirty in fishkeeping but really are not).
  25. I use pool filter sand - about $10 for 50 lbs.
