  1. I have a female afra with her egg sac hanging out and they don't seem to be in any hurry to do what they are supposed to do. I was just wondering if there was anything that I can do or should be doing to help her out. Thanks
  2. I'm not much help as far as the critter... the only one's I've seen are small wiggly things that look more like little worms but they don't bother the shrimp at all. But, if you do get it straightened out and need more shrimp... you know where to come. Fred
  3. Did you try spraying it with some type of rust remover to see if you could get the bulbs out? If you did manage to remove them you might be able to clean up the socket enough to make it usable.
  4. Thanks Jason.. I figured they'd be safe in there.. just wanted to be sure. I moved over the ones that I could find so here's hoping some of them make it. They should have lots to eat in there. Thanks again.. Fred
  5. I found a dozen or so eggs sitting in the filter and they hatched out in the last day or so. With the fish in the tank that they are in, I don't think they will be very safe with the parents. What I'm interested in knowing is... what would be the best thing to feed them after the yolk sac is gone? I have very fine fry food.. would that do as a starter? I'm also thinking of putting them into an established cherry shrimp tank.. I assume in the short term the shrimp wouldn't bother them.. Would they be okay in there for a few months until they got to a size they might harass the shrimp? Thanks Fred
  6. I have a shoal of 8 that vary from 6-9 inches and feed them almost exclusively on New Life Spectrum Jumbo Fish Formula. I feed them daily and they will almost come right out of the water to get the pellets. Their color is redder now than at any time since I have had them. I do feed them white meat fish once in a while, but, I find the water stays a lot cleaner with the pellet diet.
  7. Well.. you can put any fish you want with it. Sometimes they work for a while.. sometimes for a long time... sometimes not at all.. I've had a shoal of reds together for almost a year... then one day they just decided to do in one. An elong tends to be a fin biter.. it will take off the tail of fish and then seem to leave it to grow some back before it takes off another bite... at least that's what mine does. It's a fish with teeth and if you put other aggressive fish in with it... it's anybody's guess what will happen. If your looking for a super aggressive fish that will attack you when you come near the tank... then your probably better off with something other than piranha. Overall... they are a skittish fish.. but.. of the one's i have had or seen... the elong is probably the most aggressive.
  8. it's because, not coz :chair: i think its safe to assume a lot of people go there, and often  I don't think correcting spelling or abbreviations is a can of worms that the majority of people should be trying to address. At least he was using a shortened form and not spelling it incorrectly or using the wrong form of the word altogether. WE all knew what he meant.....
  9. I assume your talking piranha? If so, the only one I would suggest would be an Elongatus Piranha. They are a solitary fish and don't get along well with others of their own kind. They probably will grow to around 8 inches and with a small powerhead for water circulation should do fine in a 55 gal.( length is probably the most important). I have mine ( around 6-7 inches) in a 33 gal right now and that may be a little small. This one seems to not bother plecos but I wouldn't put in any fish that you cared about. If you do decide to go with one of these... let me know.. I'm in the process of arranging tanks and deciding what I want to keep and he may be one of the ones to go. You can get more info on the species here..... http://www.piranha-fury.com/information/pr...?cat=p&id=8 HTH Fred
  10. I'm not sure yet.... I either want to a: Meet new friends b: Stalk people or c: Build up my post count. I'll let you know when I'm sure.
  11. So...the Soaps will affect water quality??? Can you rectify this problem by adding extra prime before you start watching?
  12. That's all I use on my 10 gal shrimp tank and they seem to be doing great in there.
  13. Realistically ---nothing. You would have a hard time giving them away. If you have a really large tank and want to rescue them ... offer them a good home. The person selling the tank will probably find it easier to sell the tank without them anyway.
  14. I'd have to stretch to call the glass 1/4 in, it's actually a hair under ... close to 5mm.
  15. It's pretty much the same dimensions as my 33 gal tanks with no center bracing on them. If your worried, put a blanket in the bottom of the tub and fill it up to see it it leaks. It's a good way to clean it from the reptile, also.
  16. The only way to tell whether you have a male and a female is if they actually breed for you. You should be okay with your sand/gravel mix as they build a nest in the gravel to lay their eggs(I've never heard of them using any sort of rock for breeding). A 50 gal is pushing it as far as size for 2 fish of that size but if you give them lots of cover and different areas to claim you might be alright for a while. I feed mine mostly NLS jumbo fish formula with only the odd bit of meat as a treat. Unless you come have really bad tap water, they will do fine with it only being treated with Prime. I don't bother with heaters... it gets hot enough in the summer for them to breed and they do fine in the winter without one. If you have aggression problems you will want to lower the temp to combat it. They do seem to prefer low light conditions so I rarely bother with lights either. Fred
  17. If you want to keep any of the babies, you might want to move them into a different tank. My pair will tolerate the babies and raise them great until the point that they decide to lay eggs again. Then they completely clean out the tank of any babies left. They seem to lay on the average every 3-4 weeks, so yours might be nearing that point.
  18. You think we have it bad here... Try decoding this post off a different site. **2 word for that supposed fry CREEK CHUB ive used them to catch trout for year now im a dis beliver that lateral line is i belive the key as it is not know to me any fry has a lateral line like that but ill tell you what does a creek chub the rosey reds not red cousin ahahahahah** I would say the abc button is probably a ie feature as I don't have it with firefox.
  19. If it's in the thread titled BUY/SELL rules, is it something you should disregard? I may be wrong, but, I'm pretty sure that your the only one that sees that as something other than a suggestion of a way for a person to sell their product faster. They could just as easily have said (To get rid of your product fastest--give it away). A lot of other people have already stated things that I was going to bring up. So, I'll go back to my original intent with the posting of this thread. I'm using BooUrns post only as an example plus the fact it was the one that finally got me wanting to break my vow of not getting involved in politics on the site. (I'll get into that later in the post) To be honest, your agreeing with me in the fact that you suggest the mods should have final control. Point is, there are too many wanna-be-mods on here that are making derogatory remarks in posts when they have no business doing so (and not just in the buy and sell). If you as a member honestly believed that the seller was breaking a site rule, ALL you should have done was press the report button and left it at that. It's not up to you or any other member to decide whether a price asked is FAIR to everyone. I personally thought that it was a more than fair asking price for a breeding pair of fish where the fry are consistently sold on the site. He made comments concerning the amount of fish he was getting per batch and and the possibility of paying for the pair after so many batches. ( No different than any other business being offered for sale. If you purchase an existing business, there is no guarantee that you as an owner will run it as well or make the same profit. Only the potential.) I think most people on here are aware of the possible risks of not getting a breeding pair to breed in your own tank. I would have just told you or anyone else posting a comment like that in one of my posts to stick it where it fit, but he seemed fit to pull his ad. At that point admin should have got involved and NOT just archived the post. As to the reason I'm a lurker and my post count is low (I'm sure there's a lot more on here for the same reason). As was suggested earlier in this thread I think a 'rule' about this could be more all encompassing. If someone wants to give me, or anyone else, anything beyond constructive criticism, advice or praise (ok... there's more to it than that but for simplicity sake...), I'd rather it go private message. People also need to be aware that things said on boards can easily be taken differently than they were intended due to no opportunity for reading body language... they need to be careful how they phrase things, as well as how they react to what has been said, if it could potentially be taken more than one way. I'm sure there's times that some of us feel a person is being inflammatory when that is not what they intended. There seems to be a group of people or maybe its just mob mentality that seem to be hovering like vultures to attack anyone who makes a suggestion or comment that goes anywhere against the grain. Just ask corrosionjerry, he made a legitimate question concerning the member of the month ( I also had questions in the past when I had to search a members name to see what they had posted in the past month or so, but I sure as heck wasn't going to post and put myself out there to be harassed. I'm really not interested in pissing matches and this is what most of these turn out being.) I'm really not sure what can be done about this, as, some of the people overreacting aren't just reg members and should know better. That said... overall this site is run pretty well the majority of the time and I applaud the time and effort they do put into the site. I wouldn't stay if I didn't believe that overall this is a good site. I think there should be room for debate in a topic without it getting to a personal level. And, I apologize Boo if at any point this seemed like it was directed solely at you. I only used that thread as an example of a running problem. This was never meant to be a personal attack on anyone.
