1. You may have seen this already, the Abstract just came out recently three new species and new names to get used to,hit the link below http://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=18233
2. You could insulate for the heat and the amount of time most people end up using the fireplace I don't think it would be a problem.........you could have the filtration in the back so that would not really be a problem, you would need access somehow to the filters.....I would have tank only though, having two focal points like this would be too much aesthetically...... the tank would end up quite high. Once the tank was in and looking good I do not think you would miss the fireplace.
3. Might as well put the Three spined Sticklebacks at Hasse Lake west of Edmonton on that list of introduced as well. A good book for this is The Fishes of Alberta by Joseph Nelson and Martin J. Paetz .......it includes all known introduced, even collected but not established fish
4. I usually go there a couple times a year, used to be able to watch the parent cichlids with their young in the summer but haven't seen a cichlid for probably 3 or 4 years now, I am thinking it is due to naturally reduced water levels in the marshes, they may be farther out in the marsh but I doubt this as the water temperature would drop as well, they may come back if the water level rises again....who knows. The other two species are still doing well......I do not agree with introductions but the fish are interesting to see in a sort of natural environment
5. do searches for L137 or L077 there seem to be some discrepancies within this species
6. Anybody looking for a different little catfish ,Gold's still have some of the Tanganyika mouthbrooding catfish Phyllonemus typus, you have to ask for them because they are sort of hidden but they still had at least a dozen there on saturday. They are not real difficult to take care of(my ten are doing great) as long as they are not in with anything rough, cyps or paracyps would be perfect
7. Kyle,I find with the more common varieties that doing the rainy season routine with normal tap water is enough to get them going, as long as you stick to the schedule, but as said already this is the time to be breeding these guys especially for the first time. I am trying those L183's I picked up last spring but they are a little more tricky needing RO water, higher temps. etc. Just started them on daily changes today. On a different note there has been some possible changes with my trip,I will pm you. Birger
8. I am not that good with plants, can someone identify this Crypt. for me,the longest leaves are 9-10 inches long. Thanks, Birger [/img][/img]
9. Check this site out, it's quite interesting: http://www.applesnail.net/
10. Comparing P.pardalis which is the usual common nowadays and P. gibbiceps the sailfin, the pardalis usually has 12 and the gibby 13-14 dorsal rays
11. A quick way is to make a comparison of the amount of of rays in the dorsal fin, gibbiceps has more
12. It's definately not a Chaetostoma species(rubberlips) Shape of mouth, size, doesn't fit. Sorry for my mistake earlier :bang1: I need to think a little more before I reply from now on. Anyway, ran it past the people at planet catfish for you What was said: "Hypostomus species for sure, though I am not sure which one (many of them look very similar and are difficult to differentiate)." That's probably as far as the post will go as catching localities help a lot with this, I will keep an eye on it. Check out H.gymnorhynchus, there are a few like that but you will probably never know for sure. Birger
13. May not have enough dorsal rays as well, what is the length of the fish,I am guessing around 6-7 inches from the picture. Can I borrow your picture,I better figure out what it is now. Have you got a shot with the caudal fin?
14. As far as structural mods,it is just beefing up what is there not cutting anything out or making any structural changes, and yes I do this sort of thing for a living. Birger
15. I don't think you need to add teleposts,I am sure you would like to keep your garage as open as possible. Beefing up the joists would work,(there are different ways to do this)I would double up two or three as well as some extra blocking in between, this would probably suffice.(more than enough) When I see what some customers are putting hot tubs on top of(scary),I do not see your tank being to much of a problem.
16. Most likely this, http://www.planetcatfish.com/scripts/clog_...chthys+pardalis As far as I understand there are a few different kinds that are grouped together as common plecos as well as possible hybrids thrown into the mix, it is one of those things that need to be sorted out but is near impossible to do.
17. What is the length of the cat, and maybe a better picture unless he has disappeared into a hole already.
18. I am assuming it was a Chaetostoma species. What was the temp. of the tank they were going into, they are actually more of a cool water fish.
19. Not the best picture for identification but the first one looks like Batrochoglanis raninus or bumblebee jelly catfish
20. The biggest change I find has been the addition of the internet,I am not that old(fishkeeping 34 yrs) but before you really had to dig for imformation, now a new aquarist can get specific imformation or fresh ideas with the touch of a button,it's not always totally correct but if you sort through it you can usually get going in the right direction.
21. Whats in a name anyway, doesn't change the way they look. There is a lot of misimformation and rumours about these fish, this is the one everyone gets excited about but they call it the wrong name and have been doing it since I was a kid, the suttonorum has a description that is quite different than cochliodon and can not be found in the wild even though many are trying. I am certainly no expert but have been following this topic for quite some time and still kicking myself for not picking up a couple like you have when I had the chance a while ago. It is (supposedly) a good tempered fish for a large panaque, definately a conversation piece and beautiful in a catfishy kind of way. Which tank are you going to keep him/her in?
22. Sorry Rudy, that's most likely a cochliodon, still a good score. Watch for an article on these comeing up in TFH magazine.
23. Pleco's , generally speaking, like any fish wouldn't mind a treat of eggs if they can get to it,even if they don't eat them they would possibly disturb them just from going about their usual business,so yes it would be risky if you have them together and you would like the angels to spawn.
24. It is interesting, but a little risky to leave them together for a while I have done it with good end results and they will continue spawning,of course be careful when adding anything new to the tank I found them to be quite protective.
