Any Rural Folks Out There Actually Using Their Well Water?
JORG replied to jamesbarr's topic in General Aquaria Discussion
I use the liquid rock that comes out of the well. Most fish adapt to it , including the fish we ship in from S.A -
" knock offs " are junk. If a company is unwilling to design, develop and test their own products but instead steals someone else's work, what makes you think they won't skimp on the quality ?
-
Just crumble up some NLS flake and your good to go.

You could try starving them for a couple weeks, I have a few fat female vics that will not breed either and my theory is that the eggs are no good in their bellies ( calcified or something like that ). By starving them I'm thinking the females will absorb the eggs back as food, maybe feed tiny amounts of daphnia to keep the metabolism pumping and their plumbing working. Once they are skinny you could recondition them into spawning shape to get fresh eggs. No scientific back up here, just my theory ha ha. I also don't recommend separating the sexes for very long with Victorians as the dominant female will turn into a male rather quickly.

If that's the best male they have ...they are already screwed. He looks way past breeding age.

Oh yeah ! Pic or it didn't happen

yup I'm scoring huge amounts of fairy shrimp ... never seen it so thick with em before.

Easiest solution is to take them out and vent em.

If the ponds are ice free up there you could try adding some pond water ... that would fatten em up in a hurry

I'm going to use a prescription antibiotic on the Altums this time, It kept all the Manacapuru's alive and has been working well on all the pleco's, discus, apisto's etc. since we started using it. The last few shipments of Altums all ended badly so this will be the last kick at the can with them if it doesn't go better.
-
Not sure what the ph is right now last time I tested it about 2 years ago it was 6.8. I,m on a well. I found these Manacapuru's to be very aggressive. I'm expecting 25 Altums tomorrow , hopefully if things go well I can make a comparison. Heiko Bleher has proclaimed in the last issue of Amazonas magazine that the smallest of all angels the Manacapuru"s should be classified as pterophyllum eimekei . This has not gone unnoticed by IBAMA and if it is excepted, the Manacapurus will no longer be exported.
-
It will be interesting to see how they fare in the higher ph long term. I have heard that a high ph is what burns their fins. Why this only applies to Altums and some of the other rarer angels is a mystery to me. I have 8 large Amapa river angels that came in the same shipment and they have no problems with their fins. Here are a few more pics of the Manacapuru angels.

What temperature are you keeping them in Jay ?

I would suggest Fairdeal

Cheap easy stand for a 90 is 8 cinder blocks ( 2 in each corner stood on the ends... one on top of the other ) and a 18" x 48" piece of plywood. You can get 2 pieces of plywood and put a shelf in the middle between the cinder blocks if you want. The blocks can be easily painted any colour if you don't like the grey.If you are really tight with cash you could use the two 18 x 30 pieces of particle board from the crappy stand instead of buying plywood.
