Nandopsis
Move them now. Poor water condition due to overcrowding and such can cause Bloat. I raised 3 of them to about 4" then lost them to bloat. Probably due to cramp tank space. I learn from my lesson, i hope you do also. Parachromis1
i dont think filtration will be an issue. i have an AC500 and a sponge filter on there w. 24% water changes every 3 days. i have only lost one and it was due to bloat. the parents of these guys are F1's so i believe they are gonna be more susceptible to bloat. Parachromis1
FYI these are a VERY VERY VERY hard species to raise. and the other one died because the big one tried to eat it. and i am gonna move them to the 50 just gotta get rid of of some white midas. and some other fish. BUT i would rather have them in a 40 gallon breeder. just gotta find one that isnt from perfecto. terrors r us
I have read alot of articles on the bloat issues.. some say it is because of over crowding, too much aggression weakens their amune system, others say too much protien food, others say not enough water changes etc etc Some of these factors definitley attrbute to the cause but I found one article that said after years of fish dying from bloat the only thing that made a world of difference was a uv sterilizer added to the tank...this was for electric blue dempseys but it should work for all,IMO....... It's not expensive so why not try????? Just my 2 cents..................
Parachromis1
not a bad idea. if it is a parasite causing it it would work. i can get one for cheap so i might have to. thanks for the time
canucklehead
Nandopsis is right, they need more space. I raised my male solo in a 45, then a 75 and now he's in a 180. Also putting them in a small tank like a 40 or 50 with a big filter like an XP4 could stress them out, you should consider selling some of them and keeping 4-
earlyriser
It probably goes without saying the bigger the tank the better. But if that's something that can't be done right now, you can compensate with large scale frequent water changes. (Even fifty percent per day.) More importantly, how can I convince you to sell some of these? I've always wanted the infamous Black Nasty!" Where in the Edmonton area do you love? RD.
Bloat is caused by dormant flagellates (parasites) that are routinely found in most healthy fish, that proliferate to harmful numbers when a fish comes under stressful conditions. (poor water quality, poor diet, over crowding, excess aggression, etc) Remove the stress, and you remove the vast majority of bloat issues. Also, protein does not cause bloat, unless that protein is in a form that the fish has difficulty digesting, such as an excess of grain & grain byproducts. While a UV sterilizer with the correct flow rate & UV lamp power will help keep water born pathogens under control, it will do nothing for pathogens that are already residing in the gut/blood/etc of a fish. Jay's initial advice in this thread was spot on. Edited February 17, 2008 by RD.

Which I suppose it is, but I still like your explanation better than anything else I have read.
