rpm_calgary
Hi there, I purchased a 75 gallon aquaruim with Cichlids that I am not able to identify. Your assistance with properly identifying them would be greatly appreciated! I took some photos and am sure that most of them are clear enough for viewing. I have several others that I need help with but can only upload one image at a time. Thanks in advance, Rick.
firestorm
It is hard to tell in that picture. Is there any chance of posting a close up of each fish you want help on?

Hi there, Thanks for your response! I setup a photobucket account and uploaded some higher res shots of the fish. Hopefully they are good enough for you to help me out. firestorm
In the first picture you have a metriaclima estherae aka red zebra, the little guys are convicts, 3rd picture I see a nimbochromis livingstonii, a bala shark, and the last picture I recognize a metriaclima greshakei and some type of OB cichlid. Here are the profiles of all I have named, hopefully you will be able to tell if it is for sure them or not. As well in the first picture the blue fish on the bottom could be a metriaclima estherae blue zebra. Or it is a metriaclima of some sort. http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=794 http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=1730 http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=1158 http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=132 http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/spec.........don't know if this is the type of OB you have, or I would try and look up a metriaclima OB. http://www.aquahobby.com/gallery/e_bala.php http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=791 If this is not them let us know, if you can get better pics of some of the others too we can try to ID them as well. Hope this helps Edited June 19, 2008 by firestorm

Hope this helps Hello FireStorm, Thanks so much for helping me out with identifying these fish! The only one I know of that has not been identified properly is the nimbochromis livingstonii, it is actually a male nimbochromis venustus. I know this because I have seen him change from his current colours to a deep rich blue as he was ready to mate. He stayed the rich blue for about 2 weeks and has reverted to the current colouration. Again, thanks for your assistance! Rick.
Leon71
The third picture does not look like a venustus. Is it the same fish in the fourth picture? If you look at the profiles on cichlid forum the Livingstonii gets all blue in breeding dress, but the Venustus gets a blue face and yellow body. Take a look at the attached picture with a male and female Venustus in my tank.
firestorm
Definitely not a venustus, and leon is right on the money. The livingstonii males will get alot of blue coloration to them when they are mature and in their breeding dress. Here are some good pictures in these link of livingstonii's. I have a male livingstonii but he just doesn't have a female to help him bring out the blue. http://www.wetpetz.com/livingstoni.htm http://www.aqua-passion.com/fiches_poisson...04106122359.jpg http://pets.webshots.com/photo/1106337019050696376XhmzSE

Thanks for the clarification and the links The third link definately shows how my Livinstonii looked a couple weeks back. I must have found bad info about this fish on a website I had browsed a week or so back.

firestorm
It looks like a melanochromis auratus to me, I have a male of these guys, used to have females too but he killed them off. Socolofi and auratus can be very aggressive fish. They should not be housed in tanks less than 55 gallons unless you keep them by themselves. Here are some profiles, the last one being a profile I wrote on another forum. Hope this helps. Oh and most mbuna do much better being kept in longer tanks rather tall, they appreciate the foot room more since they like to swim all around and have larger territories for themselves. http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=750 http://mbunamadness.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=60 Edited July 15, 2008 by firestorm
