When I had a 6' planted tank, I used 3 x 4' fixtures. It allowed me to grow pretty much anything in the centre 2' of the tank and could easily grow Crypts, swords and other med-low light plants at the edges.

If you're not planting the tank (which I'm guessing from the amount of light) the extra light in the middle will show their colors nicely, and give a little bit of a shaded area on the edges which might make them feel more comfortable if they need a place to relax.

why not go with 2 36" fixtures to get full coverage?

duh,,, yeah, i'll do that, 4 bulbs then? enough?

Depends on the fish and plants.

Whata re you planning on keeping?

I will be stocking with African Cichlids, lots of rock,, maybe a few hardy plants down the road,, I already have flourite sand substrate which will work for plants.

Wattage doesn't really matter for now. When you decide to put plants in, you'll probably want to aim for the 1-2 watt per gallon range
