Morphine
Hey so recently I was looking around in my tank and I stumbled across 5 plants that look like Vals and Swords. I'm really confused I would of wrote these off as swords because 3 don't have runners - But 2 are attached via runner so I'm super confused. The leaves are wider then then the vals I have now and don't look like Vals at all. I planted all but 1 beside my vals in the back of my tank for comparison and they looked way different. Anyways I'm stumped. Anyways here's the pics - I can try and get better pics if needed.
BettaFishMommy
definitely not vals. looks like maybe some type of sag? Edited September 29, 2010 by BettaFishMommy
fishclubgirl
My guess would be sword as some do reproduce by runners. Vals and sags tend to have narrower leaves except for sag "platyphylla". Edited September 29, 2010 by fishclubgirl
Morphine
See I knew deep down they weren't Vals - But seeing that 2 propgrated via Runner I was confused.
fishclubgirl
I have 2 swords that propagate by runner and have not seen flowers on either. Plant ID can be very confusing
Morphine
I see.... Everything i've EVER read on Swords is that they don't send runners.... :P
fishclubgirl
Guess that's why I don't read fish books and just grow plants
vince0
ill second fishclubgirl on the runners aspect. I stressed the hell out of my red rubin sword and lo and behold, it threw out a runner. I still have both plants, and they did great after being split up
fishclubgirl
Google echinodorus quadricostatus or vesuvious for swords that produce runners. I could look it up in a plant book but I don't own one(Sorry Werner!!!)
Morphine
I see... Well thanks everyone for the iD's and opinions!
jvision
Morph, if you got them from me, they are swords - plane old Amazon swords (E. amizonicus). I think I just cut the flower stalk and gave you a few all in one - that's why it looks like they're on a runner. Is the 'runner' pretty thick and stiff? That's b/c it's a flower stalk. Runners are just like roots.

Morphine
DING --- Thanks Jason - I wasn't sure if they were in with the plants I got from you or not. That would make alot more sense to me right now. The runner or stalk is thick and stiff. Haha alright mystery solved.
