tc51
If I was to take a shot at S.A. for the first time what fish would you suggest I could start with I would of course re-search all I could before trying. I just love some of the fish I have seen. Some of the colors are spectacular. The tank I would be using is 4ft 90 gal Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. rahim101
http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/ Here's a great place start. I would suggest you start by finding the ones you like the best ans see if they will work for a 4' tank. Good Luck with your new set-up and be sure to post some pics once it's up!!!! RD.
Tom - how about a pair of these bad boys? Aequidens rivulatus (Green Terror) A breeding pair should be fine in a 90, and to that you could add a few Spotted Pictus cats. http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/pimel...elodu/276_f.php The catfish will also help keep the fry population down, as Green Terrors produce a ton of fry when they spawn. I just picked up a mated pair from Ellie, and there's another pair for sale right now. (a bonded m/f)
tc51
Yes Neil it was your post on these guys that got my interest up, I love the color. I was thinking maybe one and one Tilapia buttikoferi, but maybe the pair would work along with the cats you suggested. mmmmmmmmmmmmm. the possibilities are mind boggling. I love this hobby Thanks for the link, Rahim lots of fish to check out. Tom.
canucklehead
You could do a pair of texas cichlids in that tank, maybe a solo jag, a synspilium with some smaller fish, eartheaters; red humps, daemon, surinamensis etc. Lots of options
Nyasa
I would try eartheaters myself. Maybe G. surinamensis. Good luck.

RD.
I would try eartheaters myself. Maybe G. surinamensis. Good luck. Nyasa ...... I was just curious if you have kept these in a 4ft tank in the past, and how common some of the Geophagus are in the Cowtown area? I'm seriously considering setting up a larger species tank for these in the future. The only problem that I've come across is trying to determine what exact species people are selling the surinamensis as, as according to this comment it appears that usually they are not surinamensis, but either G. proximus, G. brachybranchus, or G. altifrons. http://biodiversity.uno.edu/~cichlid/0195.html It appears I may be adopting one in the next few weeks, that has finnage just like this Geo. http://www.tangledupincichlids.com/images/alta2.jpg Another one that has recently caught my eye is the G. Tapajos. Here's a link to a species tank set up for Tapajos. Incredible looking fish, and these aren't even fully mature yet. http://africancichlidforum.com/index.php?showtopic=160 Something else you may want to consider, Tom. Edited August 16, 2005 by RD. Nandopsis
If anyone has questions about a perticular Geophagus species, I would strongly suggest talking to Oxquo. He has done a fair bit of research on them, and is the most knolegable person i know.

dunl
Tom, I was going to suggest these to you. I saw them tonight....nice colour, four of them I think. Female lays lots of eggs, but male doesn't seem to fertilize them. You could try them without the hassle of fry.
RD.
I don't think I'd attempt keeping those 4 adult JD's in a 90 gallon tank, which is what Tom has to work with.
