bozco
Any suggestions. My dad really likes the africans, and I think they are kind of neat too, but I got a question. The tank I have is only 20 gal, its not set up yet, so I was wondering if there are any cichlids that I could have living comfortably in that space. What do you think? Thanks as always Monika
RD.
You might want to look into some of the Tanganyikan shell dwelling species. If it's a 20 long, a pair of Neolamprologus brichardi would also work. IMO a 20 gallon tank is too small to house Lake Malawi mbuna, or haps/peacocks. bozco
How about for a 33 gal? Thast population is small enough to move to the 20. I'm looking into the Tanganyikans, but would a 33 give me any more choices?

RD.
The larger the tank, the more options you'll have. I guess it would be best to know what kind of African cichlid set up you were thinking about?
freshmike
I would suggest that you do a 33 with a couple groups of mbuna.... Bang for your buck entertainment, considering a 33 is not much more than a 20, but offers so many more options due to territory and such. And, do let me plug my own business when I say that I have 3 species of mbuna just ready to infest your new tank. :P Demasoni (dark blue, white stripes, wicked fast) Mpanga (purple,white-ish blue with yellow tail) Electric Yellows. PM me if interested.
bozco
I really have no idea what I was looking for. But I will check out some of the suggested/available species. (thanks fresh mike) I personaly like plant
bozco
got to love it when a computer give out in the middle of a post As I was trying to say, I personally like planted tanks. But the cichlid set ups I have seen always seem to be very bare and rocky. Are those just the more popular cichlids? Can I set up a planted tank for some of them? rahim101
Cichlids from Africa come from predominantly bare rocky lakes... with Hard water You could go with a mixed South American cichlid tank as they all come from planted rivers like the Amozon that have softer waters. Try this link: http://www.cichlid-forum.com/phpBB/viewforum.php?f=50 for more info. Good Luck and keep us posted.
Spinalcore
I have a fair bit of Java ferns and rock caves in my African tank. You can also use Anubius in an African tank. Both seem to be safe bets for surviving the Africans from what I have heard.
RD.
Yes, lots of people have various plants in their African tanks, it basically comes down to what you like in a tank set up. Keep in mind that some species of cichlids are more prone to ripping up and/or digging up plants.
rahim101
Hey bozco, How did you make out woith your tank????
bozco
I have not bought any new fish. The 20 gal is set up now and with the use of old substrate and filter never went through a cycle. It holds my male angel, about 8 khuli loaches and 5 raspboras The 33 stock has dropped to my female angel, 3 hatchets, and 4 cardinals. Since my angels are a true pair, and have spawned before I beleive I will condition them, have them spawn in the 20 and then move them to the 33 if they won't raise the fry. But first I must figure out what is killing things in the 33 which will probably mean tearing it down and starting over.
rahim101
http://s6.invisionfree.com/AlbertaAquatica...p?showtopic=766 refer tot he above topic...it deals with a similar tank footprint as your 20 Gallon OR check out this article: http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/cookie_cutter_20g.php Cheers,
