I doubt that fixture would be of any value over a tank. Those tiny leds don't put out much. I don't know about planted tanks but reef tanks are having good luck with 3w led arrays.

Hey Snaggle, I've spent the last three evenings reading about led arrays. I need a light system for my new 110 gal reef tank and can't decide what I want. LED's are a possibility, but they are really bloody expensive, even for a DIY array. I'll post up some links for you. Some are prebuilt others are the components for diy. The first one from nano-reef is a really good reference for DIY, these guys seem to be ahead of the crowd on reef central. http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/index.php?...6982&st=380 http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthre...hreadid=1587273 The info on this build is also in the link from nano-reef, it was devised on nano-reef and documented on RC. DIY LED's www.kaidomain.com www.dealextreme.com www.besthongkong.com Prebuilt Systems http://www.lck-led.com/LED-Aquarium-Lighti...0323ccf510ba06e I haven't done any reading to know what a planted fresh tank would need in terms par or temperature for the plants. I'd assume that it would be easier to build a planted tank setup than a reef one as most white led have a lower k rating than needed for a reef tank. Some of the grow lights on ebay may work for what you need and be waaaayyyyy cheaper than what a reef tank needs. I'll post more links tonight as I do more research, I know I've seen more prebuilt systems I just don't know where.
  3. My water change stuff for my saltwater is stored in the unheated garage. It is brought in thawed out once a week used then put back out in the cold. It hasn't hurt the heater in the last two winters. I bring it in let it warm up for a while, fill the bucket with water and plug it in, no problems.
  4. I've had fish go missing for weeks, found nemo inside a dress shoe on the rack behind the tank, found a couple laying under the couch all dried up. If they die in the tank they are usually gone, the crabs, shrimp etc clean them up before I notice them. My tanks are all pretty small so the fish are also small.
  5. Looks like acropora. Most of them like high light and medium to high flow.
  6. Crayola Tabletop? Could you at least give a better description than that. LPS, softie, SPS would also be helpful to know. Basic shape and description. A picture would probably get you an answer almost instantly. With tabletop in the name I would GUESS it is a monti cap of some sort.
  7. Just south of Sounding Lake.
  8. Welcome Slowrider. It is a great hobby and you've happened upon a great board with lots of wisdom. I live south of Provost. If you have a need for anything in an emergency pm me and I may be able to help you out. It is a real pita to get supplies out here sometimes!!! My tanks have all gone salt in the last couple of years, but I have kept fresh for a decade or two.
  9. That was my first thought too!! Last time I was in there it was dark, dingy and very cluttered.

If you go with the nova extreme get the PRO model not the standard. SLR make a huge difference, they cost a bit more but put way more light in your tank.
  11. I hauled a bunch of convicts to Edmonton from home. We stopped overnight at the inlaws place half way. Used a big rubbermaid tub. I took 5 gal of tank water in a container did a water change just before bedtime. While at the inlaws a powerhead and heater were on in the container. Total time about 30 hours, no problems with the fish. A better way for just one fish is the biggest container you can find that will fit inside a cooler. Put a couple of heat packs in if it's cool out, fish should do just fine.
  12. I'm running an Aqua C remora on a 24 gal, works well but wouldn't be big enough for 110. My 110 gal has a deltec 600 on it, only had it running for a couple weeks so don't have a lot of experience with it, it seems good, reviews are also good. The deltec can run hob or in sump. Also have a Tunze and like it, they make internal and external versions of them. Do lots of research and don't buy a cheap piece of crap, it will only cost you more in the long run.
  13. Looks good. When you are done yours you can come do one for me. I will buy the beer. We will use the Bobcat to dig the holes.
  14. I have had the same tank running for somewhere around 20 years, no trouble yet.
  15. I use the same method as cuz. Works well.
  16. The only time you can have enough light on a reef is when your bank account runs out of money for lights and electricity. Just kidding. 2x8w t5s is woefully inadequate for a reef tank. thegrandpoohbah is giving the same advice I'd give you. Stay away from cheap t5ho's. Make sure you get the ones with the individual reflectors. If you can't afford them now save up and buy them later, good reflectors make a world of difference in fixtures of the same output. Good lighting is getting less exspensive all the time. Another consideration is what do you want to keep in the tank in the future? A softie tank will generally have a lower light demand than an SPS tank. Do lots of thinking and research before you plunk down your money. It will save you some expense in the future.
  17. Is it a mushroom or a ricordea? Your description of bubbles and white guts makes me think it is a ric. Either way both pieces should survive without any problems. Cutting them into pieces is the common method of propagating both animals.
  18. I've never had a problem switching them back and forth. They need a good cleaning with vinegar, a good rinse and good to go.
  19. Yes it will work just fine. Down the road you will want to pick up an RO/DI unit, just to keep your bank account happy.
  20. Industrial Plastic and Paints had it last time I called them. I've used acetone to fuse acrylic may work on your canister too. www.ippnet.com is their link. They are located on the east side of the city, south of Aquagiant on the west side of the road (IIRC).
  21. Myka on Canreef was trying it. Not sure how much success she's had in the last while though.
  22. The green algae just means something is out of whack with your water, could be phosphates leaching out of your rock. Hard to test for very small amounts of phos, but it will still be enough for GHA to thrive. Green hair algae is the scourge of the reef tank, a real pain in the butt. My first tank was solid green for it's first six months, as the tank has matured and I've become smarter the GHA is almost totally gone, took almost a year. Start by picking off the algae, not a fun task but worthwhile. Get some macro algae like chaeto it will out compete the GHA for nutrients. Some critters will eat it, I've got turbo snails, and an emerald crab at the moment. I'm not sure if you used the word detritus properly. Detritus is usually crap on your rocks and tank bottom. I think you may have meant diatoms. They show up during the cycle, as a reddish slime all over the tank. They are normal and will go away as your water cleans up over time. If a snail or something dies in the future you may get another outbreak of them. As for pH buffers I have no idea about them. My pH is pretty much stuck on 8.2 in all 4 tanks and doesn't change unless I dose a bit too much alkalinity, which is to be expected. HTH
  23. Least expensive way to get good tests is to find a LFS that will do water test for you. Have them check it out for you. While you are there buy some Elos or Salifert test kits. The Hagen one's may not be as accurate as they could be. For pH buy an electronic meter. Test strips are notorious for not being accurate. Once you get the meter buy some calibration solution 7 and 10 and calibrate the meter once a month or so. Hanna makes an affordable product that works. As far as your cycle goes, I'd bet your ammonia is zero too. Ammonia is the first step in the nitrogen cycle, if you have ammonia you should have nitrate and nitrite. Toss the Hagen stuff and buy some better test kits, even API may be better than Hagen. I started with API and now only use Salifert, been happy with that brand. I've heard good things about Elos too, but never used them. Ahhh, let the money pit open open up and swallow it's first stack of $100s. HTH
  24. I figured it would have been too big a coincidence. Kind of like "Do you know Bob from Toronto?"
  25. This may seem odd, but were you talking about selling a tank to a couple people in the store? There was a thread about that on canreef a week or so ago. A couple was talking to a Frank about buying a tank. They then lost the contact info. If it was post back on here and I'll find the link for you. Nice fish.
