  1. Congrats! Well it can be tricky but at that size differences are starting to show, let's hope for a couple of males. John
  2. I have some nice ones will send you a pm later tonight John
  3. Yup good and cheap in the same sentence usually spells disaster
  4. Hi geleen, I did clean the filter before adding the new fish. I took it apart, rinsed everything in a large bowl of tank water and replaced one foam insert. I also added twice the amount of Prime that I usually do because I have heard that the Spring run-off can cause ammonia jumps. The filter is the likely culprit, likely not enough bacteria left for the additional fish. Ammonia and NitrItes build up quickly and killed the fish. These new fish were stressed and would have been weak to start......We have all been there done that I am afraid. pls consider a quarantine tank for new fish they are the likely cause of fish death in an existing tank.
  5. This could be because of the addition. If they were not separate for a month or so they could have brought disease. the addition of more fist overwhelmed the filter....how did you clean it the day before? The pale patches sounds like ammonia. depending on your bio load 25% per week may or not be enough. This time of year there may be more ammonia in the water (spring runoff) and I add more prime for the month of March and April.
  6. You can have glass cut to size then get a plastic strip at your local fish store if wanted Put any fixture on top Jason's right 13 watts will have so much light you wish for less J
  7. Here is a mean option but commonly used in a mixed tank: add a predator.
  8. My snails graze on the glass during -the dark period- around 3-4 pm and at 11 pm I use a small thin plastic jar (Urine collection jar works fine) about 2 inch x 2 inch scrape gently from the bottom to almost dislodge then wait for the snail to fall in the little jar, do all you need, then discard. I harvest 25 at a time to feed the loaches when they become a pest. I collect 25 in 2 minutes most times. J
  9. Sorry to here this. Wish I could help, but I have no clue. John
  10. As usual Rick; you captured them perfectly. It is for sure one of my favourites. When mature the male gets that classical rainbowfish profile with a deep body. As shown in the pictures the dorsal and anal fins on the male are long and flowing. The vibrant red fins are beautiful John
  11. Yup discus are a labor of love. 5 in 60 gallon is plenty. And as mentioned more WC then most are willing to provide. J
  12. If you have a contact number for someone in the Saskatoon club please let me know Thanks John
  13. WOW..... imported from Saskatchewan!! I would love some Thanks Ed John
  14. Please enlighten me..what is a sap J
  15. I lover them and have 7 4-5 inch in a 160 gal with rainbow fish they need to be in a group of at least 3 to be happy. Easy on plants and leave other fish alone.
  16. I think most if not all of us been there. When old enough they will breed and breed and....... Unless you really love them and can't resist, better if they not breed. You will be having a lot of heartache culling and they do not make easy feeder fish either as they are super fast.
  17. Happy wife, happy life...............she likes fish.......happy you Good luck J
  18. These filters are designed to replace the filter on a monthly basis. Its a money thing. After this many months it is clogged. You are right, you want to preserve the bio. For now rinse a bit more vigorously. Also the carbon will last only a few months at best likely only 1 month, after which it is useless as carbon but becomes a part of the bio. And will likely return to the water any stuff it removed in the first place. I would get an other filter were you can separate the bio from fine floss filtration. Carbon is not necessary most of the time. An aqua clear 10 or 20 would be a better choice perhaps. You can leave both running for a month and remove the old one after. Someone one the forum will likely have a used one for sale........I have a mini I believe but have to go and look. Hth John
  19. Start adding salt , to 1 table spoon per gallon over the next 6 hours. Check the net for maximum dosage. Check for velvet disease as well. mixing remedies is not a good idea J
  20. Looks like a cycle, smells like a cycle, must be a cycle Chloramines do not evaporate and must be removed with a product like prime. Check if Al's product removes chloramine. If not, there is your problem. You can buy the right bacteria from either seachem or a hagen product, it is a liquid you add for 7 day's The store will know what it is called, as I do not remember. I would also start to vacuum the gravel a bit just incase to much stuff has accumulated Water changes of 70% will not hurt your fish and not feeding for 4-6 day's wont either. Hope that helps.
  21. I would dose excel 2 week as per bottle suggestion, and put a substrate pellet by the crypts that should be more than enough for now. The Anubias in the shadiest spot Hth J
  22. I want to construct a ladder type structure using light weight tubing. Hoping to put it together with T's and corners. Thinking about 3/4 to 1 inch square tubing. Total size about 8 feet by 7 inches I will use it lying flat. Does anyone know we're I can get this type of tubing in PVC or perhaps some kind of lightweight metal Welding not really an option for this hobbyist, however would look at paying someone to tack it together 😀 As I will be using this on top of an aquarium, lightweight and rust free would be the best Thanks for your idea's and help J
  23. Just ordered one yesterday because of the sale...the manifolds are sold out  Shipping is free. J
