  1. I would never have thought that a cool water change would trigger Haps to breed? Lake Vic is a very large body of water that keeps the temp steady, no? J
  2. Looking just fine. I have had plexi glass bend quit a bit over a tank so perhaps look out for that. J
  3. yeah perhaps..... that is why I mentioned the Giesemann bulb should be able to get the right one at your LFS not petsmart.
  4. The light you have is likely ~ 6500 Kelvin brightness. This would be the one to use with plants. Decor plays a role in "washing out" You can play with background color or substrate color( not so easy with fish in the tank) dollar store plastic table cloth is a nice cheap way to change the backgrounds and get a feel of what you want. Many use blue or black. I have both but prefer bright blue. This said the hood light is likely a cheap bulb, so you can take it to the fish store for size and buy a replacement Gieseman bulb for plants. I have used tubes at 3500 K this will give a more yellow light 10000k is very white. I would hold of on Led lights for a bit, you could spend another $ 175 very quickly....the technology for aquariums is changing rapidly and getting better all the time. J
  5. The frenetic darting might well be a response to irritation in the gut...this fish will likely die as well. I have seen it before. Unfortunately without the right equipment or other visual symptoms treating the whole tank is irresponsible in my opinion. I have removed all the macollochi in the one with the sick ones, to a hospital tank and treated them only, with some success.....they survived. Perhaps start with a wormer. With mine levamisole helped BUT will cause some or (semi) permanent sterility. Good luck John
  6. These guys seem very sensitive. What is the temperature? I find them susceptible to worms when only slightly stressed. They absolutely need clean water and I closely watch the nitrates in the tank they are in....I like that value to be < 20 Adding some new fish recently? Hth John
  7. I have put 5 gallon on just a store bought shelf with steel brackets from the hardware store. I have a 4 foot shelf with a hydroponics planter on the same... 3 brackets....
  8. I had another comment, but kept it private! Looks like the economy is not so bad on the US WOW INDEED John
  9. I will take a look at the stock lists which I get just before I order and see if any are available. I will email some suppliers now to see if they ever get them in as well. I would love a few of those myself. Me too John
  10. Clever absolutely. Ethics? Morals? The animals have no value to the seller and they have not even given it a second thought, money is the only motivator, as mentioned here. Unfortunately in our society, these issues are multiplying at an ever increasing rate........are we growing so immune to "clever " marketing to the point of normalizing stupidity? Here is another example....(not related you say, think again)..In an other world we had electricity supply run by our government .....effective, reasonably priced.....had a look lately what clever (read lobbying) marketing got us there? I am sure one can come up with many more examples....I can, do not get me started.. Perhaps capitalist thought is running amok.....no I do not favor communism:-) Ok enough time on the sandbox John
