  1. That sucks shite ! I lost my W/C phenos so I feel your pain. Its a real shite sandwich.Hope that wasn't your only male because that is total devastation when you basically lose a breeding group.Hope you recover ..... Ryan
  2. Try feeding raw shrimp . I used to feed mine pellets in the morning and either crickets or shrimp at night.
  3. As far as mbuna go : Cobues, perspicax Haps:taiwon reefs, phenos Large Haps:fossorochromis rostratus, champsochromis caeruleus Aul. Maleri and Baenschi get my vote in the peacock department.
  4. I just got back from Golds and if you are looking for some new fish most of them are 2 for 1. I picked up 6 pseudotropheus perspicax aka red top ndumbi,a trio of cobues , 2 more moori that come from an asian supplier (these guys are excellent specimens), 4 mylochromis "mchuse" (nice size),3 A/C 110 and a heater all for less than $300. Can't wait to get the new tank so I don't have to do daily water changes on the 3 that I have. My 150 has about 30 fish in it right now that are supposed to be in their new 228 gal and one of my 33 gal, supposed to be fry tank, has 12 cyanerabdos, 8 petricolas,6 Ndumbis,3 cobues and a pleco, my other 33 gal fry tank has 10 heterodons that I grew out from fry that are also destined for the new hap tank .This really sucks because both my female maleri and azureus are ready for the fry tank and I have no room. Oh well, if you've got to have problems these ones are pretty minor.
  5. -roll- Yeah ,I've had fish that were a little self-indulgent before. Fish masturbation
  6. The good thing about it is my wife felt so bad that she said I could sell the tank . I did and I'm now waiting for my 228 gal custom. Should be ready Dec. 28 but its coming from Mitch so you never know. This one will be filtered by 3 AC500s!!!!
  7. $300 ... sounds like a real hose job to me.I paid $180 for 6 WC phenochilus 3-4". I think you got had. You'll have to sell a lot of fry to get that back. Hope you don't kill them like I did my phenos :bang1:
  8. I don't know if anyone else has ever experienced this or not but I thought i'd share it so it doesn't happen to someone else. I recently had an Xp3 filter that lost its prime. I'd done a water change that morning but I never noticed the if the sprayer bar was working or not as I was moving some other fish around. When I got back from shopping the filter was making some noise so I reprimed it . Within an hour all my fish were gasping for air.I checked the nitrates ,ammonia , and nitrites .Nitrites were quite high.I did a water change and fish began to act normal again even showing spawning behavior. I thought it was cool. The next mornig a pleco was the only fish out of about twenty in the tank still alive. Among the dead were 5 WC phenochilus and three other breeding groups. The moral of the story is don't restart a filter if you don't know how long its been down. I suspect the detritus left in the filter poisoned the fish as it rotted when there was no flow. I hope this will help someone else to avoid this catastrophe. See you soon Albert.Time to start over ,Ryan
  9. 6 kenyi and 6 cyanerabdos in 29 gal ? I hope that's only a temporary situation. Fairly large and aggresive mbuna to keep in a smallish tank. You'll have to keep up on the water changes and avoid the urge to overfeed or your tank will go south in a hurry. Good luck and keep us posted.
  10. Nice work Albert but thats first front I've seen with a horizontal stripe. I know.... everyones a cynic. Thanks for your hard work and its nice to se some updates on cichlids.ca Keep it coming , Ryan.

    WTF!?

I had a similar problem the past couple of days . Nitrates got a little high did a water change lost a couple of fish . Went to the cupboard and got out the kosher salt and followed the guidlines on cichlid forum for salt teatment . 1 tsp / gal every 12 hrs for 36 hrs ie : 3 treatments ( and another box of salt). They also give instructions for a salt dip. So far no new deaths and this is the second time it worked for me.
  12. I've always been fond of any of the elongatus and I also have a few haps that you could experiment with... otopharynx heterodon, fossorochromis rostratus, protomelas steveni (taiwon reef) and aulonocara baenschi. All are juvies about 1-2" long.
  13. I had lithos in my tank that I actually watched breed with themselves. After a few days they would spit or swallow .
  14. The reason I'm interested is because I can't control the algae in my cichlid tank and I believe its caused by the coralife lights that I'm using . The lighting is awsome but at the end of the week you've got a major algae build-up. Would the UV sterilyzers help to solve this problem. The money is not an issue. I just want to know if they actually work or if they'd work for this application. Thanks ,Ryan.
  15. Ok that didn't work ,computer illiteracy sucks, I'll keep trying. My Webpage
  16. My Webpagehere is the end result on my 150. Sorry I suck at photos.
  17. What exactly does a UV sterilizer do?
  18. The first tank I just did the sides and a couple of strips down the top and bottom and on the second one I did the whole perimeter and got better results.
  19. I guess I should mention the cost: $7.99 / meter black felt and $2.99 / meter for black velcro. If you have a fabricland card there is a 40% discount. At least in Red Deer. I bought 8m of felt and 6m of each type of velcro for a total cost of $107.00. The velcro was enough to do my 6ft 100gal. and my 5ft 150gal and there is enough felt to do at least 4 tanks 6ftlong and 3ft tall. My tanks were done using only 2m. of the felt. I gave 2m to my stepdad and 4m to Neil.To do my tanks cost about 2m felt =$16 .... 6mof each velcro = $36 Total= $52 ... Visual therapy .....priceless.
  20. Buy a piece of felt to fit your tank and some stick on velcro and you've got a fast , clean background solution . No mess as with paint and only takes about twenty minutes to do on an established aquarium. The results are fantastic. Fast , clean and trained monkeys can do it.
  21. I would say they are like most africans: It depends on the tank and the individual fish in that tank. That being said , I've kept them with 2 very large yellow labs and acei . Though the acei did fight with my large male pheno so when I got the new additions( 1male and 3 female W/C) to go with the existing pair I ultimately got rid of the mbuna just to be on the safe side.
  22. Sorry I just read the add again and now I'm confused . You post a price and say to message if intersted ,and at the bottom you say you don't know if you should pick it up or not . I wouldn't buy at that price.
  23. I don't mean to be rude but I think you are out in left field. I just recently set up a 100 gal tank costs were: Coralife lights: 2x3'= $200 Tank w/glass lid $275 Rena XP3 x2 = $240 Ebo-jaeg htr $50 Stand: got the materials free from work and a buddy welded it for me for a case of beer . So unless you have a fantastic stand I think you're asking too much. If you get more than $100 for the arrowana you're doing good and the rest isn't going to appeal to the masses so unless you've got a good light set-up and a smoking stand I'd drop the price to $800 if you are in a hurry to get rid of it . Bear in mind I haven't seen the tank or the fish and I, personally wouldn't pay more than $500 for a used 77 gal tank and the arrowana needs a bigger home so i'd sell him seperately. You should post a pick so people can get a more realistic value. That's my 2 cents.
