  1. I had a female rostratus that slurped up my taiwon reef and heterodon babies as well as her own and there's probably close to a hundred of them in my fry tank right now.
  2. I went camping on the weekend and came home to a tank full of dead fish . Nitrates spiked and I lost the works. 1otopharynx heterodon 1 taiwon reef 4 moori 4myl. mchuse 4 buccochromis rhoadesi 3rostratus. Sole survivors 1 female rostratus 2 plecos. 4. I just added a second XP3 to my 100 Gal. Gold's has them for $169. I bought the first one at Pisces on sale $199 (It was a Thurs and Gold's was closed.) I have the same lip on mine . Your choices are pretty limited. I asked Dennis if he ran sumps on any of his tanks and he said he only runs them on salt water and you don't need one for fresh water. I've never ran a sump myself so I don't know what they cost or what kind of efficiecy you can expect . If you have any info I'd be interested in reading it. That's my 2 cents take it or leave it.

    pillow foam

I don't see why not as long as you get your slobber off it first. It's probably some kind of poly-foam and I use the poly wool you buy @ Walmart . The stuff they sell as aquarium wool is the same as the stuff they use as quilting stuffing . I say clean it up and give it a whirl. Only problem I forsee is that it may not be as porous and could clog up quicker.
  6. I just had 3 different fish in a 33 gal first to spit was otopharynx heterodon,a day later taiwon reef . I then removed the first 2 females . Fossorochromis rostratus was the last to spit and when I went too close to the tank she'd suck up all of the fry she could fit into her mouth including those that weren't even hers . At first I thought she was eating them but a few minutes later she spit them all out . Talk about weird . I haven't seen that in the 14 yrs I've been keeping fish. '

  8. This is an interesting topic . I'd like to here back from Albert as I recently bought some W/C phenochilus that didn't come with any paperwork. Just curious to know where they came from . I would've bought them regardless and they are nice fish but I would still like to know where they came from. If they ever produce fry do I sell them as F1 or do I just say they where captive bred? The whole point of buying W/C is to produce F1 fry is it not? In no way whatsoever am I angry at Golds . I won't buy fish from anywhere else in AB. Other than other hobbyists. I would just like some clarification. Thanks Ryan.
  9. Steaks, beer, moving heavy objects, and talking about fish: I'm in . I'll even bring the first flat of beer . Now it sounds like an AA meeting. Ryan.
  10. Just a thought ,have you checked your kH & gH ?
  11. THAT SUCKS! Check all of your electrical connections and see if you can rule out electricution, not likely ,but worth a look, also if you have an in tank thermometer that is glass it could've broken and could be poisoning all of your fish .It sounds stupid but it happened to me before. If your test kits are old they may not be accurate. Sometimes you never figure it out and that really sucks. Hope that helps,Ryan.
  12. Water changes make you r fish grow faster because they have les environmental stress , the trace elements in the water are replenished, gill function is better and pollutants are lower. Happy fish is a growing fish. NLS is CGS (certified good stuff)as for cyclopeze I don't know I can't get it in Red Deer I don't think the only place I've seen it is on Gold's website www.cichlids.ca.Hope that helps.
  13. Id be willing to help run an aquarium society in RD but i have no idea how to get one started . I'm more than willing to lend the time .
  14. Thanks guys hope to get to know you all a little better.
  15. I would've posted this sooner but i have computer literacy problem.Neil showed me the way though. Thanks Neil.My name is Ryan I 'm from Red Deer .I've been into Aquariums for about 14 yrs . I started out with mbunas and juggled around about 30 different species. Then I decided I wanted bigger and badder so I got a couple of oscars and a frontosa .Then an arrowana and now back to Malawi cichlids because once you've had malawi cichlids the rest are pretty boring. Now I have 2fossorochromis rostratus1m1f, 4copidichromis azureus 2m2f, 3protomelas fenestratus/steveni taiwon reef 1m2f,4otopharynx heterodon 2m2f F1, 3 otopharynx lithobates 3f, 3 placidichromis phenochilus 1m2f WC,2 cyrtacara moori 1m1f. I also have a 33 gallon fry tank housing 30 taiwon reef fry and 30 azureus fry.And will be adding another 33 gal. fry tank soon as the fossi ,heterodon, taiwon reef and both azureus are packing right now. Here's a plug for Neil. Since I started New Life Spectrum my fish have gone from very nice to spectacular. My rostratus is spawning @ only 4.5" and the most stunning colors of any I've seen. Now if someone can only show me the magic to get those phenochilus to spawn. Awesome site and I hope to meet more of you soon. PS thanks Darcy, for turning me on to this site.
